SLAMABAD: Acting Saudi ambassador Marwan bin Radwan Mirdad has denied that Pakistan is mediating between Saudi Arabia and Qatar over their diplomatic row.

Speaking at a press conference at the Saudi embassy here on Thursday, the Saudi charge d’affaires said Pakistani “prime minister did not say he was mediating”.

He was speaking through a translator. He rejected media reports about the Pakistani mediation effort as untrue. “Whatsoever is in the media is not correct,” he said.

Says Kuwait and Sudan are making reconciliation efforts

Last week Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif travelled to Jeddah on a daylong trip along with Army Chief Gen Qamar Bajwa. Finance Minister Ishaq Dar and Adviser to the PM on Foreign Affairs Sartaj Aziz accompanied them.

The acting ambassador’s statement puts the prime minister in a potentially embarrassing position. The PM’s Office had, in a statement before Mr Sharif’s departure on the mediation mission, said: “Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif will visit Kingdom of Saudi Arabia today in context of the emergent situation among Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries.”

The crisis in the Gulf started late last month with the hacking of the website of the Qatari news agency and peaked when Saudi Arabia and its allies Bahrain, Egypt, Yemen and the United Arab Emirates severed ties with Qatar over allegations of promoting extremism and terrorism and hindering efforts to contain Iran.

The Saudi diplomat said the crisis happened because Qatar had been persistently violating a 2014 accord between Qatar and GCC countries. Although the 2014 accord, which had then paved the way for resumption of ties between Qatar and its neighbours, is not public, it is said to be a commitment by the signatories about non-interference in each other’s affairs, cooperation on regional issues and ending support for extremist groups.

Mr Marwan said Mr Sharif, while travelling to Saudi Arabia, did not indicate the purpose of his visit.

The acting envoy separately noted that Kuwait and Sudan were making reconciliation efforts.

Pressed by the media, he said: “There is, however, a possibility that the issue could be discussed in some future meeting. Leadership of both countries is currently in Makkah.”

As per media reports, the prime minister’s mediation effort was not encouraged by the Saudi royal family. Saudi king Salman bin Abdul Aziz had told Mr Sharif that “the fight against extremism and terrorism is in the interest of all Muslims and the Ummah”.

The Saudi government usually does not acknowledge Pakistani endeavours for resolving disputes in the Gulf.

PM Sharif had undertaken a similar effort last year to reduce tensions between Saudi Arabia and Iran in the aftermath of execution of Shia cleric Sheikh Nimr.

However, soon after PM Sharif’s visit to the two countries, Saudi Foreign Minister Adel al Jubeir had denied Pakistani mediation between his country and Iran.

The Foreign Office and the Inter-Services Public Relations, the media wing of the military, did not respond to queries about Mr Marwan’s claim.

As i said earlier Pakistan has no standing , credibility or leverage to mediate..It is an internal GCC affairs and they didn't ask for any mediation by Pakistan .Nawaz sharif has no respect in fabrication lies

. .
lol out of all people Nawaz sharif to mediate he himself needs letters from shezadeh what is he going to mediate

Seriously, why would any non Arab country want to get involved in Middle East politics?

Contrary to the parallel universe in which some PDF members live, in this universe, Pakistan has no diplomatic clout even in the Middle East.

Quite the contrary, at least as far as ME goes, Pakistan exercises significant clout and this snub is a result of the fact that Pakistan failed to place its weight behind the KSA as they had anticipated and desired. Instead, Pakistan hosted the Qatari delegation, met with their prince, assured them of our support and reaffirmed our commitment to stand by our agreement on LNG imports.
This line is unacceptable to KSA and thus has solicited this response, a sort of cold indifference to Pakistan's role.

. .
right now we should cosy up more to qatar.
Why should ? We should stay away as nobody as Pakistan to mediate or take stand ..

So what is the exactly significant clout we have?when they can snub at there will ?
Pakistan does not hold any significance in ME politics ..Significant comes when you can influence or assert other party ..While GCC do have influence on Pakistan but not vice versa

well we do need oil revenues, or we just let them kill each other and concentrate on cpec.
But we won't be able to take anything as the history proves ..
Let's take example of Qatar having biggest trading partner is India majority of expats are Indians ..Indian should be more concerned rather then Pakistan ..
Pakistan will not get bullion of dollors or some heavy military financing ..so it's better to stay away ..they have not asked us to come and interfere ..we don't hold any leverage either so it's better to concentrate on internal issues like Afghanistan ,Iran and India ..how many will cosy up with Pakistan against Indian ..better we stay quiet as no body needs us

Obviously when you fail to acquiesce to the policy of choice, there will be a snub but that would not mean that you have no political clout in that arena. The President of France has issued several snubs towards the USA after its withdrawal from the Paris Climate Accord, would that somehow translate to the observation that perhaps the US does not possess any political clout in Europe? They were snubbed after all. Macron said that the US decision to withdraw from the accord will strengthen rather than weaken it, he called on American scientists plagued by budget cuts and policy hurdles to continue their research in France. Very significant statements.

In Pakistan's case, we exercise our influence by means of our military capacity. It is an essential safeguard that the Arab States, particularly KSA are dependent on for the security and survival of the regime. Be it in the case of Yemen or that of the IMA, they need Pakistan's military strength to breathe life into their imperial ambitions. That also gives us the leverage to pursue an independent foreign policy despite being an economically weaker state. KSA can snub Pakistan for its decisions but never challenge it. If such a situation would come to pass, Pakistan would simply withdraw all troops from KSA, two brigade's worth. With that, the Kingdom's security and training infrastructure would unravel.

This is of course, a hypothetical worst case scenario. The truth remains that they are never likely to do so because Pakistan is as important to them as they are to us. Relations between states are always transactional.

Nawaz Sharif is a disaster for Pakistan, In his term we made more enemies then friends.
