Saudi Arabia to finance three CPEC projects

Russian initiative to conduct offshore pipeline feasibility, if found feasible, will see them investing billions.
Care to explain why the Russkies would build a underwater pipeline to shift gas/oil to Pakistan? What they love doing things the hard way?

Look at map below. Please explain why go underwater when you can go by land and it is far, far cheaper. Or Russian's got penchent for fis from the Bengali's?

@niaz Can we have your input please. This whole "oil city" does not make sense to me. Why would KSA send their unrefined oil to Gwadar and have it refined there? My understanding is refiners profit margins are very thin but require large investement and less manpower. It's not like a garment plant that requires more manpower but low tech. So why would anybody set up a 'oil city' in Pakistan unless it is to meet Pakistan's domestic demand?

Forget export for now, Our refineries can fulfill half of our domestic demand, rest we are importing as refined oil. So, current domestic demand and future forecast require us to setup new refinery.

Russian Gazprom was negotiating with Iran to invest in 3-4 different off-shore gas fields, I don't know the current status but It seems this project is related to those off-shore gas fields.

Someone from Iran might update the current status of Gazprom investments

Even if this is from South Pars, the offshore field Gazprom has been developing with Iranians, we will not be having it directly from the fields. The gas is sour and needs to be processed before being transported.

The offshore pipeline to me is a non starter. I have been saying this in earlier posts. The only plausible explanation I can think of is, Russians want to lay an offshore pipeline to India from Iran, avoiding Pakistan's EEZ. While they are doing that, they also want to tap into Pakistan's market, and hence they want to lay an offshoot to Gwadar from this hypothetical Iran-India pipeline. They have signed the agreement and will be bearing cost for the feasibility study. Maybe they will come up with something else, but there's almost zero chance of a stand alone offshore pipeline to Pakistan and it's economical viability. Having said that, the Russian's interest must be welcomed, even if this particular project fails to deliver any fruits, it will pave the way for future cooperation.

The South Pars field, is North of Qatar and South of Kish in the map you posted.

Maybe posts here will offer some better explanation,

Why would you build underwater pipeline from Iranian oil/gas fields to Pakistan which are probably three times more expensive compared to land pipe?

Does this make iota of sense?

To avoid sanctions perhaps?

It seems very difficult to bypass Pakistan's extended EEZ for any pipeline from the Gulf towards India

it seems this arrangement has more to do with politics (due to sanction on Iran) than the technical reasons as under this purpose arrangements Gas from Iranian off-shore field would be extracted and marketed by Russia to Pakistan which mean this deal if concluded will serve all three counties.

At this current stage we could only try to understand logic of this purposed option, but it is difficult to give any definitive answer.

Will Pakistan get transit fees in case pipeline goes through Pakistan sea to India? Similar to TAPI deal.

Gazprom is itself sanctioned too.

IF the purposed pipeline goes beyond Pakistan at any later stage than we should get transit fee as per international laws

To me it look like Iran - India gas pipeline , but because Pakistan EEZ to big so they (Russian) thought why not extra market …. So it will be Russia - Pakistan - India(main destination ).
India will have some security if Russia operate this pipeline , and if it is offshore that will increase India's sense of security ….
What ever it is , we need gas and we can surly earn money even if gas is going to India or China or any other country .

I am sure we will , even if Gas goes to china .

This pipeline is offshore , so how will sanction work on some thing in sea not on ones country land?????

100% khalai makhlooq is behind those ''10 minute meeting'' aftermath investments.

If Nawaz Sharif had good relations, he could have earned same benefit, but after buying flats in London, he started to believe he's son of Queen Elizabeth.

Fearful of strings attached to this deal. Saudis will ask us to send forces for Yemen invasion and its a sad reality.
