Saturn's 'Death Star' Moon Mimas Is Weird Inside!

I didn't mean water but Methane ,

You said liquid, without specifying what liquid and where it is located. I merely corrected what i thought you mistakenly claimed.

Titan is too cold for water to remain in liquid state .

Friction from inside of the moon generates heat, melts the ice up to a certain height and then stops as -273C is hitting from the other side.

. .
is there a possibility of a Moon being larger in size then our Earth ? like we have Titan & Ganymede which are larger then Mercury

that again brings us to the question "what is a planet and what is a moon"... there are no agreed definitions... and this question was also asked by @Developereo here ( Saturn's 'Death Star' Moon Mimas Is Weird Inside! | Page 2 )...

your own example has titan and mercury... titan has an atmosphere. mercury does not... titan satellites around saturn, mercury has no satellites... mercury itself orbits around sol ( this sun ), but there are also "free-floating worlds" which don't have a star...

.
Agreed it not hollow for sure :D
But i agree, being hollow would make it so light that it might be tossed like a ball in it orbit,or could be sucked in/collied with the star/planet.
As for Big Bang ,it all just a ''assumption'',there have been stars found which were almost as old as the univers, the thing here is ,it takes somewhere around few billion years for a planet to be formed. I dont belive on the Big bang theory, even if something as such happend,it must have happend in a ''space'',what would you call that space then?
yeah..we can keep on questioning forever!!
btw Scientists Find Evidence For Oceans Of Water Far Below Earth’s Crust
they also mention about massive tides....so there should be some hollowness!! for example "a completely filled bottle"!!
...yeah core can not be hollow!

off topic: when i was a kid...my granpa used to tell stories from "Bhagavatam"
"Varaha murthy" it talks about ocean far below earth!! ever heard about it???

The question then becomes which body is the planet and which is the moon?

For example, Pluto (which is not a planet any more) has a moon called Charon, which is big enough that Pluto-Charon are called a double system. It's not clear that Charon should be called a moon of Pluto.

You have to remember that when we say "the moon orbits the Earth", that's not 100% true. In reality, both bodies orbit a point which is the center of mass of the whole system. In this case, that point happens to lie deep within the Earth, so we can simplify and say that the moon orbits the Earth. But the Earth also wobbles around that center-of-mass point.

. .
Yes that makes sense.:-)
Let me introduce you to someone who will be able to give theories related to hollow moon... @OrionHunter I might need your help here.:)

There's something about Iapetus, the mysterious moon orbiting Saturn.
Notice the ring around it? 12 miles or about 60,000 feet high and 750 miles long. And it's straight as an arrow!
Compare both the images. Am I imagining things? Shades of George Lucas and his Star Wars saga!!

An entire spaceship world … trapped in orbit … around Saturn! If it is a giant spaceship, then it must be hollow!

But, because of the deafening silence coming out of NASA on what it already knows but won’t release (let alone suspects!), about the glaring anomalies we’ve now identified about this “moon” … we are left with only one sad but inevitable conclusion:

NASA, again, has decided to “tough it out” … to officially say nothing -- like it has treated all its other discoveries of “extraterrestrial ruins” in the solar system … over the last 30 or so years.

Next we have Phobos, the moon of Mars.

The Martian moon Phobos, generally accepted as a celestial body, actually may be an artificial satellite launched long ago by an advanced Martian race, according to Dr. S. Fred Singer, special advisor to President Eisenhower on space developments. No mention was made of the other Mars moon, Deimos.

Dr. Singer backed a claim first made by the Soviet astrophysicist Shklovsky. The Russian scientist's announcement that Phobos was a hollow, artificial satellite, proving the existence of a Martian civilization, set off heated arguments among astronomers. Shklovsky based his decision on a long study of Phobos' peculiar orbit, which other astronomers have noted. The Russian claim has calculations and those of earlier astronomers prove Phobos cannot possibly be an ordinary moon.

In 1963, Raymond H. Wilson Jr., Chief of Applied Mathematics at NASA, joined Shklovsky and Dr. Singer in their Martian conclusions. He stated that "Phobos might be a colossal base orbiting Mars."

Talking of a hollow moon or gigantic spaceship, I suggest a wonderful book, 'Rendevouz With Rama' by Arthur C Clarke. It's mind boggling what the interiors could look like. One could carve out the insides of a small moon and presto, this is what it would look like.....Here's 'Rama' a hollow cylindrical spaceship 60 km long and 18 km in diameter with a 'sea' 10 km wide in the center circling the massive cylinder from the inside.

We'll probably have some of these or those carved out of moons within the next 500 years! What's science fiction today will be reality tomorrow. And who knows, very advanced ETs could have carved out some of these moons as bases!

Cheers! The truth is out there!

Maybe not like a completely filled bottle, but yes there could be a layer under the surface of the earth which could contain water, now the question could be how deep would tht layer be,even if its jus a mile deep,it would more than enough for a water flow jus like it does in our oceans, but its been said by the scientific community that there's more water under the surface of the earth than upon the surface,so maybe it could be way more than a mile deep, again just assumptions.

Nope, thats new to me.but sounds good, thanks. I guess in bhagvatgita, there's also a refrence to 3 parallel universe, though nothing as such would be proven, atleast in my life time.

I asked that to my science professor and he gave me a rude reply. :(

Is it a coincidence or a it's an alien weapon of masss distruction?

Thanks for introducing me to lapetus and thanks for the video. But is a Rama like environment really possible inside a moon which has an opaque surface??

Lol. Not surprised ,it was a question like pehle murgi agyi ya anda :D ,no science teacher would have an answer for tht. I once asked my mechanical teacher if he could explain me how does a turbofan engine works,he lectured for 10 minutes,bt never on the topic. :D

Btw wt was his reply?

@levina @OrionHunter

on base within phobos ( and other objects )... yes, phobos can be certainly dug into and a base created... the mud and rock of phobos will create shielding from radiation from the electric storms from the sun and the general cosmic radiation... that much is true... and phobos is not very far from the waters on mars ( even if in ice form )... and water can be used as shielding too... phobos being used as base is described finely in the book "red mars" by kim stanley robinson, the first in his "mars triology"... that book has good detail of terra-forming ( converting a world into earth-like environment )... great books.

on saturn's moons being secret alien spaceships... sorry, orion-hunter... i don't believe that... besides, the star wars series itself seems to be based on the best science fiction ( or future writing ) ever... the dune series, which is centered on a world resembling mars... star wars is quite silly, and i have seen just one film, i think... but another "moon" of saturn, titan, is very interesting too... it is the only "moon" object that has a thick atmosphere... it also has liquids on the surface... liquids like methane, useful as fuels.

I still cant understand how an artifical environment can be created when the surface of the so called moons will remain opaque and ergo the availability of sunlight would be zero??? :undecided:

Answer to your question extracted from my thread on AboveTopSecret:

Asteroids As Space Colonies

The evidence is mounting that a substantial fraction, if not actually a majority, of the asteroids are made up of carbonaceous chondritic material. If so, the asteroids contain an almost inexhaustible supply of hydrogen, nitrogen and carbon. So why not hollow out large asteroids and make them self sufficient to maintain a colony of say a thousand ab-initio with adequate resources and space for additional expansion of the colony during its decades long journey to another star system?

A hollowed out asteroid will offer complete protection against cosmic particles and other space hazards. Regolith is a viable and effective in-situ life support system resource due to its shielding properties, and in the future due to its O2 generating and heat storage potential as well as its shielding properties.

Pseudo gravity can be produced by rotation and food grown in hydroponic farms. However, this can be complemented by the soil/material of the asteroid itself.

Internal Atmosphere

Photosynthetic agriculture has a further advantage in that it serves as an important element in regeneration of the habitat's atmosphere by conversion of carbon dioxide and generation of oxygen. It also provides a source of pure water from condensation of humidity produced by transpiration.

But what about recycling waste? Wet oxidation (Zimmerman process) would be the most preferred as high quality water would result. Such a recycling process could go on indefinitely.

Life In Free Fall

An environment of weightlessness or zero g for a journey lasting many decades is impossible considering the physiological and psychological effects. It is therefore incumbent to have pseudo gravity inside the ‘space ship’ through out the journey so that the residents could live with the same sensation of weight that they would have on the Earth's surface, namely 1 g. Some variation about this figure is inevitable and so it is specified that humans permanently in space should live between 0.9 g and 1 g. This choice of a 10 percent variation is arbitrary, but also maintains conditions as Earth-like as possible.

Pseudo gravity can be achieved at the periphery by rotation of the asteroid. The decision to provide 1 g to the colonists means they must reside in a rotating environment; the most feasible way to generate artificial gravity. There would however be forces acting other than the centrifugal force which supplies the pseudogravity. Thus, although the inhabitant at rest in the rotating system feels only the sensation of weight, when he or she moves, another force, called the "Coriolis force," is felt, which I will not labor upon. At low velocities or low rotation rates the effects of the Coriolis force are negligible, as on Earth, but in a habitat rotating at several rpm, there can be disconcerting effects. However, the colonists would need getting used to this, which would not be much of a problem.

What Would A Space Habitat Look Like Inside?

Check out my vid in the previous post showing what it would look like from the inside.

It is hoped that scientists would one day start thinking of making use of the natural resources like asteroids and small moons to construct large cost effective spaceships to house space colonies to explore and colonize strange new worlds, to seek out new life and new civilizations, to boldly go where no one has gone before!

Cheers!

I did watch that video.:-)
And thats the reason I asked you how would we get sunlight into a colony which is dug as the surface of moon/planet would be opaque. I was reading a few articles where i read sunlight could be brought insto these colonies using mirrors.
But I still dont see the possibilty of large habitats like RAMA because for such huge habitats the weight of the atmosphere itself might become the most important part of the habitat by weight. The atmospheric pressure on Earth is about ten tons per square meter. The habitat walls would also need to be extremely strong to contain all that weight. It is calculated that twelve miles across spherical habitat would have to be made with titanium. Perhaps carbon nanotubes or other advanced materails could be used to build huge habs like this in the far future.
Another way would be by having numerous criss-crossing stays across the centre of the habitat like a suspension bridge, but that would ruin much of its appeal. :)
So atleast in the near futture I dont see such large habitats as a possibility..may be smaller inflatable types.what say?
