February 23, 2010: Russia activated its first S-400 (also known as the SA-20, Growler or Triumf) anti-aircraft missile system around Moscow. This new version of the S-300 pays particular attention to electronic countermeasures that the Americans might have, or be developing. Two years ago, Russia announced that the first S-400 had entered service around Moscow. But that didn't actually happen, and development work continued. Recent test firings of the missiles were successful, and a battalion is now deployed around Moscow. Each S-400 battalion has eight launchers, each with four missiles, plus a control center and radar. The two year delay allowed more system components to be built, so two more battalions will be in place around Moscow by the end of the year.
The S-400 is similar to the U.S. Patriot, and is expensive. Russia is unsure if they want to export S-400 right away, because of the advanced technology. Meanwhile, work is underway on the S-500, which is scheduled for deployment within five years.

The S-400 missiles weigh 1.8 tons each and are 26 feet long and about 20 inches in diameter. The missiles have a range of some 400 kilometers, and can hit targets as high as 100,000 feet. The missile has a 320 pound warhead. The target acquisition radar has a range of 700 kilometers.

The S-400 has over five times the range of the U.S. Patriot, weighs twice as much and claims the ability to detect stealthy aircraft. The S-400 also has an anti-missile capability, which is limited to shorter range (3,500 kilometers) ballistic missiles. That would mean a warhead coming in at about 5,000 meters a second (the longer the range of a ballistic missile, the higher its re-entry speed.)

The S-400 system actually has two missiles, one of them being a smaller, shorter range (120 kilometers) one. The S-400 has no combat experience, but U.S. intelligence believes that the tests these systems have undergone indicate it is a capable air defense weapon. Just how capable won't be known until it actually gets used in combat.

Russia plans to buy up to 200 launchers (each with four missiles) by 2015, and phase out the older S-300 and S-200 systems. This would mean deploying at least 18 battalions in the next six years, and perhaps more than twenty. The S-400 is sometimes described as an improved version of the S-300. Basically, it is. This is how Russia prefers to develop weapons, making incremental improvements on a basic design, and doing so for decades if the system continues to be successful.

Russia pulls S-400 air and missile defense system off the market

Russia has decided to withdraw its advanced missile defense system for export. Officials said the Kremlin has ordered the state-owned arms agency Rosoboronexport to end marketing of the S-400 air and missile defense system. They said Rosoboronexport was told that the S-400 would be deployed only in Russia until further notice.

"Russia would consider exports only after meeting the requirements of its own armed forces," Rosoboronexport director Anatoly Isaikin said on Jan. 28. Over the last five years, Rosoboronexport has sought to sell the S-400 to a range of Middle East states, including Iran, Saudi Arabia, Turkey and the United Arab Emirates. So far, no export sales were reported.

"There are a lot of preliminary talks," Isaikin said.

The S-400 Triumph was designed to intercept airborne targets at up to 400 kilometers. Rosoboronexport has asserted that the system could destroy stealth aircraft, cruise missiles and ballistic missiles.

In 2009, Rosoboronexport lobbied the Turkish government to purchase the S-400. Ankara, which appears to favor the U.S.-origin PAC-3, has conducted a $1 billion tender for the procurement of missile defense systems.

Officials said the Russian military would require at least two years to exploit the potential of the S-400. The first S-400 battalion entered combat duty in the Moscow region in 2007.

"There have been bugs in the system and this has prevented us from properly demonstrating the S-400 abroad," another official said.

what about S-500 I think its also nearing its experiment stage

.
well indian never intend to buy it and with american indo growing ties russia wont sell its ace tech which it has made to counter USA stealth fighter jets

Can it shoot down supersonic cruise missiles like Brahmos ?

.
i dont think so there is any thing at the moment which can guarantee shooting down of super sonic missile like brahmos , unless it gets a hit in inital flight stages or a ''LUCKY'' hit by new generation air to air missile fired by a capable fighter like Aesa equipped f 18s .

. .
What's the unit cost compared to Brahmos, and how hard is it to convert to ground/ship offense weapon?

Using S-400 (or even S-300) china can cover whole of Taiwan from mainland.

I don't think Americans will be too happy about this... especially because of the fact they are trying to sell the Patriot SAM to India and other countries.

If the Russia demonstrates the effectiveness of this missile, then the Patriot will have a tough time winning new users.

.
But I think some american customers are stable, like Taiwan Japan, S/Korea.
(maybe less Taiwan in the future)

regards,

chinese already cover pretty much all of Taiwan straits and the island itself. They have S-300 & HQ-9 units apart from other medium/short range systems deployed. Planeman's blog-site can give you a very good idea of the defences (check for fortress china or chinese naval power).

i think this video would be helpful. see it from 2:39,

Hi,

S 400 is indeed a massive surface to air missile with a long range. An extremely serious threat to any incoming air craft. Airwarfare is going to change definitely. With capable interceptors, any defending nation will do some serious damage to the incoming enemy.
