A Russian naval reconnaissance warship has collided with a Togo-flagged boat near Turkey’s Black Sea coast, prompting an evacuation. There were no reports of casualties on either ship, but the Russian boat sank.

A Turkish coastal safety official told Reuters that 78 crew members had been evacuated from the Russian ship.

Russia’s defence ministry said its vessel, the Liman, had a hole as a result of the incident. The ministry told the Interfax news agency there were no casualties among the ship’s crew, who were “fighting to keep the boat in the water”.

However, the Turkish coastguard later reported the boat had sunk, around three hours after the crash.

The shipping agent GAC said the Liman and the other vessel, which it identified as Youzarsif H, collided in fog and low visibility. The Togo-flagged boat is believed to have been carrying livestock. All its crew were also unhurt.

The incident occurred shortly before noon local time, around 20 miles north-west of the Bosphorus strait, which divides Istanbul into European and Asian sides. Coastguard and emergency teams were dispatched to the site.

The Liman is a former research vessel that the Russian navy has retrofitted into a reconnaissance ship. It is part of Russia’s Black Sea fleet and is equipped with radio and sonar equipment. According to Russian media reports, it had returned from a voyage to the Mediterranean at the end of January.

In February, sources in the military told Russian media that it would be observing Nato’s Sea Shield exercise in the Black Sea.

A Russian warship has sunk after colliding with a freighter in the Black Sea off the Turkish coast.

The 78 crew members on board the Russian navy's intelligence vessel - Liman - were evacuated.

Turkish officials said 15 Russian sailors were rescued after boats and helicopters were dispatched to the area, near the Istanbul coastline.

The crew on the freighter, which was carrying livestock, were also all accounted for and safe.

Shipping agent GAC said the Russian ship and the Togo-flagged vessel - Youzarsif H - collided in fog and low visibility.

Crews had battled to keep Liman afloat, according to the Russian defence ministry, after the crash left a hole in its starboard side.

It said the vessel "sustained a hull breach due to a collision" some 25 miles northwest of the Bosphorus Strait.

It added the crew would all be picked up by a nearby Russian cargo ship, the Ulus Star, and transported to Sevastapol, the home base of the Black Sea Fleet, in the Crimean Peninsula.

Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim's advisers called their Russian counterparts to convey Ankara's sadness over the collision.

Liman is a former research vessel the Russian navy has transformed into a reconnaissance ship.

In February, military sources told Russian media that it would be observing NATO's Sea Shield exercise in the Black Sea.

The livestock carrier, built in 1977, has a capacity of 2,418 tonnes and is managed by Nejem Co. Marine Services, according to Thomson Reuters shipping data.

Note: Good to know every one on both ships are safe and sound................

The super duper Russian spy ship couldn't detect the incoming freighter(otherwise, they neutralise, jamm aegis destroyers). On top of that, none of the Romanian sheeps on the cargo boat were injured while 78 Russian sailors went for a swim.....You can t make this stuff up:-) :-) :-)
A ship that was carrying sheep successfully rammed a ship that was carrying rams.

A Russian spy ship has sunk off the Turkish coast after being breached in a collision with a freighter, with all its crew rescued, the Turkish coastal authority says.

Russia confirmed earlier that the hull of the Liman, part of its Black Sea Fleet, had sustained a breach, with crew working to keep it afloat.

The cause of the collision is unclear but fog was reported in the area.

The ship hit a Togo-flagged boat carrying livestock, Turkish media say.

Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim called his Russian counterpart, Dmitry Medvedev, to express his sadness over the collision, sources in the Turkish prime minister's office were quoted by Reuters news agency as saying.

The Russian Black Sea Fleet (BSF) passes through the Bosphorus Strait for deployments in the Mediterranean, notably in Syria.

All 78 crew aboard the Liman were safely evacuated, the Turkish coastal authority said in a statement (in Turkish) on its website.

It collided with the Youzarsif H freighter, reportedly 29km (18 miles) from the Turkish town of Kilyos on the Black Sea coast just north of the city of Istanbul, and had sunk by 14:48 (11:48 GMT).

It was not clear whether either vessel was heading to the Bosphorus Strait at the time, Reuters news agency reports.

The BSF said the Russian crew had followed all the rules of sailing and manoeuvring and it suggested the incident had been caused by the other ship, Russia's Interfax news agency reports.

A former commander of the fleet, Adm Viktor Kravchenko, told Interfax the event was "out of the ordinary". "There have been collisions but I do not remember a case like this, of a vessel, a warship sinking after it," he said.

The Liman was photographed passing through the Bosphorus in October

The freighter reportedly sustained minor damage in the incident.

Built in Gdansk, Poland, the Liman was launched in 1970, when it served with the USSR's Northern Fleet before joining the BSF in 1974, according to the kchf.ru naval website (in Russian).
Based at Sevastopol in Crimea, the territory annexed from Ukraine by Russia in 2014, it was a regular visitor to the Syrian port of Tartus for decades, the site notes.
In 1999, the Liman made international headlines when it was deployed to the Mediterranean to monitor Nato operations against Yugoslavia.

Rule, Togo! Rule the waves.

The super high tech Russian spy can't see a freighter coming, other than that, they jamm everything on Arleigh Burke destroyers in Russian comedy propaganda

Doesn't seem like an accident to me.
Any defensive maneuvers before the incident by Russian ship???
What is a spy ship doing so near to Turkish coast??
Surprisingly all the crew are saved by turkey after collision.looks like they are eagerly waiting to same them from drowning before collision happened

It was passing by the Bosphorus, dense fog blocked the view and radar signals probably.

@flamer84 Wasn't there also a case some years ago of Russian Su-24s jamming and paralyzing USS Donald Cook's systems in the Black sea which scared it's crew so much that sailors jumped into the sea to save their lives, others pooped their pants and most of the crew was so frustrated and terrified that they requested to be relieved from active service right after they somehow managed to reach Constanta Port? :cheesy:

Looks like in this case Rusians were too busy spying on NATO to even notice Togo's cattle kamikaze ship approaching them... Or who knows, it can even be a new Russian technological miracle that doesn't have an analogue in the West- Spy ship which turns into a Spy submarine or something. :woot:

.
:)))) They'll blame it on NATO somehow. On a positive note,no Romanian sheep on board the cargo was hurt.We all ready have jokes that we don't need weapons, just send kamikaze sheeps towards Russkie ships

What makes you think the Russian ship could not see other ships? Have you ever took the helm of a ship or even boat in a busy waterway? I have, but clearly you have not.

I have been in waterways where there was heavy marine traffic, both commercial and private vessels. Half the time the private vessels have behaved recklessly to where I had to change course for multiple vessels in a short span. There is also shallow spots where larger ships avoid making it even more dangerous and congested. Fog, wind and waves also play a factor in navigating waters.

Large ships have the right of way because they are slower to react. With that said, it is not even clear as to what happened and who was at fault. If the other ship was at fault it doesn't mean the Russian ship did not see it coming or that it did not take evasive action. The Russian navy vessel is not a jet ski, it turns slow and accelerates slow.

Ship collisions are not that uncommon:

Can radar be blocked by fog?
are there protocols when ships are pass near ports?

One can never have full understanding of nature no matter how advanced technology one uses. Nature by by its nature is unpredictable.

Considering Israeli maritime embarrassments, I wouldn't be talking.

Israeli can't even tell the difference between between US warships and Egyptian so they just bomb a US warship.

But this takes the cake. Israeli "special forces" getting beat up by civilians:

It might have ended differently if their training didn't consist of beating up children, old people and helping bulldoz family homes
