Russian think tank calls for sale of Su-35 fighters to Pakistan

Sukhoi-35
Sukhoi-57

Both would be appropriate addition to Pakistan Airforce

Both Pakistan/Iran should jointly join Russia in the Stealth Program

. .
Russia don't follow these ethics since Russian are selling same products to China and India as well. Masla yeh nahien k bar mien kitni daru hai masla yeh k tu kitni pee sakta hai means when we have money we can buy any fighter like Eurofighter, Rafale, J-11 or SU-35.
china is not Pakistan for india… china and india never claim to be rivals....but india and pak do... I don't think Russia would risk indian orders for Pakistan....until we have a capability to buy like india...and we know we don't... Buying these fancy aircrafts is beyond us right now....we should focus on j17 ONLY

Russian think tank calls for sale of Su-35 fighters to Pakistan in retaliation to India opting out of FGFA

New Delhi: Is Russia unhappy with India's decision to pull out of the project to jointly develop a Fifth-Generation Fighter Aircraft (FGFA) and planning to sell one of its top jets - Sukhoi Su-35 - to Pakistan in retaliation? According to Russian news outlet Pravda, a defence thinktank has called for Moscow not to prioritise India's interest too much even though it still buys most of its defence equipment from Russia.

"We do not want to offend the Indians, but I believe that against the backdrop of India's hesitation about the project of the fifth generation fighter, Russia should promote the Su-35 fighter jet in Pakistan. Otherwise, Chinese, South Korean or even Turkish companies will take this market in about five years," Russian Center for Analysis of Strategies and Technologies Deputy Director Konstantin Makienko was quoted as saying by Pravda.

India and Russia had signed an inter-governmental agreement in 2007 to jointly develop and produce a fifth-generation stealth fighter for their air forces but in July 2018 Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharam announced that New Delhi has conveyed to Moscow that they can go ahead with the project and India may join it at a later stage following disputes over the cost and performance of the proposed fighter.

"India has removed all moral obligations from Russia with its behaviour, so Russia should get rid of self-restraint in its relations with Pakistan. In the past, we would often decline profitable contracts with Pakistan for the sake of India, but now we should follow our own interests of commercial profit," said Makienko. The Sukhoi Su-35 Flanker-E air-superiority fighter is the most advanced fourth generation jet in service with the Russian military.

Pakistan has had a close strategic and defence relationship with USA and China although in recent years it has tried to get closer to Russia too. While the relationship with USA has been rocky in the last few years, especially after the 9/11 terror attacks and the killing of al-Qaeda founder Osama bin Laden in the garrison town of Abbottabad, its ties with China have grown exponentially as both the countries have been laying claims over Indian territory.

However, Makienko views are yet to gain currency in Russia with Moscow-based Center for Strategic Trends Studies Director Ivan Konovalov pointing out that India has been a friend for several decades and any move to sell state-of-art weapons to Pakistan carry very high risk.

"Russia's cooperation with India began back during the times of the Soviet Union. Orders from India and China had saved our military-industrial complex, and India always pays attention to how cooperation between Russia and Pakistan develops, considering this cooperation hazardous to its interests at times," he told Pravda.

Konovalov added that Russia had sold multipurpose helicopters like Mi-8 and Mi-17 to Pakistan and there was nothing wrong if India, too, was trying to get defence equipment from other countries including the USA, France and Israel.

While admitting that India pulling out of the FGFA programme was a setback, it must be kept in mind that the two countries have collaborated successfully in developing several weapons in the past and continue to enjoy a healthy defence and strategic relationship. Konovalov also said that Russia will cooperate Pakistan only in the fields that do not affect India's interests.

China should sell J 16 to PaF, 36 will be a good number.

Russia didnt produce a bolt on J 16, why cant we sell it. China shall not do anything just to please the polar bear.

so far only lip service from Russians, its good chance that China shall mobolize.

People need to focus on few developments which have taken place in past few days. First out of no where SU-35 news comes in our main papers like The News and Jang. Than our Caretaker PM visits PAF Office and is briefed by PAF on some serious matter. And Now Russian Deputy Defense minister is here.

@Path-Finder @waz @Arsalan @Horus @Oscar
Its been 5 years now? Right?

If PAF buys modernized SU-35 would actually be one of the great purchases. New platform, new techniques, new weapons, new knowledge. It will give the much needed technical enhancement in PAC industry and overall fill the gap of a long range strategic fighter.

With SU-35 induction, Rd-93, and other aviation design items will relatively easily come to Pakistan from Russia.

Our whole western-Chinese LLR network is prone to jamming.

If PAF buys Su35 we can get 24/36 fighters in 1 Billion $ where as EF would cost 2 billion $ to get a sizable fleet of 24/36.
In an environment of cash restraint making a 3-4billion buy with new infrastructure and weapons is cost prihibitive. Secondly it would only make sense to buy it with a Chinese AESA and fire control Radar allowing for easy integration of current inventory but that would be unpalatable to the Russians plus add to the cost of new Radar integration. At least with EFT buy we will get top of the line EU stuff and we maybe able to use the US inventory of weapons on it. However a contemporary AC means parity but no advantage so one has to wonder about the bang for buck equation.
In short there are many more questions than there are answers. We have time on our hands as we wont be doing anything till at least 2021 so let us see the induction of block 3 and watch the pace of Chinese 5th generation and armament development and reassess the situation then is my argument.

The J-16/J-11D would be the best of all options. Some members have rightfully pointed out that integrating the Su-35 would require a lot of time and effort. It is an entirely new platform with Russian weaponry. Logistics would have to be setup all from scratch.

The J-16 on the other hand is basically a concept equivalent to Su-35. This fighter fulfills all the requirements of a strong naval squadron along the lines of Su-35. It is after all a derivative of the same Flanker family. Familiarity aspect would not be massive a headache considering how Pakistan already operaties Chinese missiles and weaponry. I think Pakistan can even come to a favorable financial agreement. Pakistan should seriously look into the J-16.

i cant agree more, i think all missile defense are interim solution. energy weapons are way to go

Exactly, we need to leapfrog the current technology and focus on the future, it is not as if we have any imminent danger.

Trolling on side::::::::
Only thing we can work with Russia in current environment is a better engine for JF-17 (maybe any local maintenance or local production at best) , some medium range air defence for Army(not airforce or navy) and at max Russia will allow China to sell us J series so we can buy J-11 or J-16,,,, Rest troops training some odd numbers of helis is not a big deal or issue or problem.

. .
With recent changes it might be possible to see Russian planes in Pakistan sooner then later
It would not make sense to seek a replacement when F16 fleet is fully used up

Talking from experience, the Russian buy is always filler and not a force multiplier. The reason is when you deploy assets to extreme conditions, you can’t expect a ROI but drain your own resources just to make them operational.

From the earlier CAG report we had IAF couldn’t even commit the RARP coz of the ambiguity.

We buy those jets but we equally spend a fortune to maintain those. Means your liquid money has to have the power to make it worth.
