Sweden, Finland, Norway and Denmark create joint air defense forces to counter the Russian threat
The air force chiefs of Sweden, Norway, Finland and Denmark said on Friday they had signed a letter of intent to create a unified Nordic air defense aimed at countering the growing threat from Russia.
The goal is to be able to work jointly on the basis of already known ways of working under NATO, according to the statements of the armed forces of the four countries.
Major General Jan Damme, commander of the Danish Air Force, told Reuters the move to integrate the air force was prompted by Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February last year.
"Our combined fleet can be compared to a large European country," Dam said.
Norway has 57 F-16s and 37 F-35s, with another 15 on order. Finland has 62 F/A-18 Hornet and 64 F-35s on order, while Denmark has 58 F-16s and 27 F-35s on order. Sweden has more than 90 Gripens.
The signing at Ramstein Air Base in Germany last week was attended by NATO Air Command chief General James Hecker, who also oversees US air forces in the region.
Sweden and Finland applied to join NATO last year. But the process has been hampered by Turkey, which, along with Hungary, has not yet ratified the two countries' membership.
Scandinavian air force chiefs first discussed close cooperation at a meeting in November in Sweden.
Dam said: “We'd like to see if we can integrate monitoring of our airspace more, so we can use radar data from each other's monitoring systems and use it collectively. We don't do that today."
