No. Red Army losse in the start of war not becase of Red Army weakness - but because of Nazi might. French Army was 1 of most powefull armies and Nazu have beaten them in 1 month. Just 1 month!!! imho, base in Tartus, protecting ally-Assad (customer of weapons-4 bill.$), protecting Russian investments in Syria (20 bill.$) and sticking it up to the evil west and "fear" about spreading radicalism, fear mostly coming from the fact a similar sort of thing could brew closer to Russia in the Central Asian republics.

As an added bonus he gets to obstruct the various little schemes with regards to Qatari gas exports/the supposed pipeline through Syria and as a consequence can promote his own pipelines/gas project (Gazprom is the builder) called Nord/South Stream each a project worth tens of bill.$ which are in direct competition with European led consortium whose main purpose was to diversify gas supply and reduce Russian influence.

So, he has quite a bit of cards on the table, saving face would probably be one of them too.Personally i think he won't step down and if anything is to be negotiated the minimum he will go is a separate Alawite state. Unless something unexpected happens after which protecting Assad will make him a pariah, though presently, i don't see him doing something stupid, he played his part very well.

You'll have to think where the russians were in the ME and where do they stand now regarding influence.They lost Egypt decades ago,Lybia was lost a few years back,Syria is the last stronghold.If you look at the ME,N Africa i think Algeria is the last customer and friend they have standing besides Assad.Seeing some die hard soviets around here i'm beginning to root for the salafists in Syria just because it's fun to think at Putin's reaction when they'll kick his cronies out of Tartus at the end of the war.
