Great news as Russia announces another response to Israeli aggression against Russia in Syria which led to the deaths of 15 Russians.

Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu:

A modern S-300 air defense missile system will be supplied to the Syrian Armed Forces within two weeks. It is capable of intercepting air assault weapons at a distance of more than 250 kilometers and hit simultaneously several air targets

... I will underscore – at the request of the Israeli side, in 2013 we suspended the delivery of S-300 systems that were ready for the dispatch, while the Syrian military had undergone training. Now the situation has changed, and we are not to blame."

Russia's MOD had outlined a list of concessions Russia had made to Israel (allowing them to strike Syria at will, pushing Iranian militias away from the Golan, not supplying s-300, etc) and said that the Israeli attack on Latakia (which led to the downing of a Russian Il-20 and death of 15 Russians) showed Israeli arrogance and lack of respect for Israeli-Russian relations.

Russia's Defense Ministry on Sunday formally blamed Israel for the downing of the Russian aircraft last week over Syria, accusing the Israeli military of "criminal negligence."

In a report detailing the circumstances surrounding the incident, Russia accused Israel of deliberately misleading Russia on its planned airstrikes, preventing the downed plane from moving to a safe place on time.

Shoigu also said that Russia would start to electronically jam aircraft flying in to attack targets in Syria. "We are convinced that these measures will calm down some hotheads and keep them from careless actions which pose a threat to our troops".

Israel said it was random s-200 fire that caused the downing of the Russian plane, so now Russia will supply Syria with more accurate missiles (in the s-300 system) that will prevent such a mistake happening again. :-)

Shoigu stated Monday that the situation surrounding it’s deployment has since “changed through no fault of Russia,” and stressed that if measures taken by Russia following the downing of the reconnaissance plane “failed to cool hotheads, we will have to respond in line with the situation.”

"The command posts of Syrian air defense forces and units will be equipped with automated control systems only supplied to the Russian armed forces. This will facilitate centralized control over all forces and resources of the Syrian air defense, monitor the situation in the air, and ensure operative issuance of orders. Most importantly, we will guarantee the identification of all Russian aircraft by the Syrian air defense systems," TASS news quoted Shoigu as saying.

According to the Russian defense ministry, Moscow will also impose electronic countermeasures over Syria’s coastline which would “suppress satellite navigation, onboard radar systems and communications of warplanes attacking targets on Syrian territory.”

Israel put on notice.

Former Labor MK and ex-Mossad chief Danny Yatom suggested the crisis with Russia may get worse, saying in an Army Radio interview Sunday that “this is the beginning of what could be a very serious crisis with Russia.” He warned: “The Russian military has a broad spectrum of possible actions it can take, up to and including contemplating shooting anti-aircraft missiles at our planes.”

S-300PMU2 is a 1990s system. Syria already operates advanced Buk M2 and Kornet missiles which are newer. It's not like Syria don't have experience with advanced Russian hardware.

So you are suggesting that S-300 is older than kornet thus weaker in the interception of Israeli fighters?

Kornet missile

Well, that's an Idea.

What are the chances of Israel already having the ability to jam S300's?

SAA already received training on how to use s-300 in 2013, so should be a smooth process

very high, Israel practiced against Greek s-300pmu1 so it depends if Syria gets pmu2 and how more resistant to jamming etc the new version is to the Greek version

what is interesting is there are two scenarios 1) syria uses s-300 to strike israeli jets successfully and then israel will probably try to destroy the s-300 which will anger russia again, or 2) if israel still manages to attack at will then russia looks bad if s-300 is useless.

It'll be interesting to see how the F35 would perform against such a dense variety of SAM considering IAF has pretty much one of the best EW system in use in the ME.
