Why not mig-29 upgs - a 120 odd instead of rafale?

Because the UPG might not stand a chance against latest Chinese J10 and J11Bs. The UPG is an upgrade of an old platform and surely makes it far more capable than the Mig was in the past, but it's still a decades old design, with very little modern capabilities. The Mig 35 as proposed in the MMRCA was the next step, but still didn't brought it close to the capabilities of an EF or Rafale. So why should we make us more dependent on Russia and let our industry produce a decades old fighter?

Yes but don't we already have enough fighters for both 40k tonne carriers & should be scouting for fighters for INS Vishal

As per our requirements 2 Sq for carrier operation and 1 more sq for training purposes . May well be used as a coastal security.

Well since we may loose a couple of Aircraft & it's the Russians we are talking about we should order some Migs as replacement
