Russia, Egypt nearing $3bn arms deal: report

All rumors, i haven't seen any agreements. All speculations. Neither sides announced anything

Initial agreements, meaning we don't know if they decided on weapons, all they did was agree to disagree on what's needed and what Russia could provide probably.

. .
So the F16 C/D block 52 deal cancelled or already arrived in Egypt?

. .
8 were delivered before restrictions were put in place by the US because of the political situation. The rest will be delivered when the US lifts said restrictions (which is already happening).
Thanks. Then another question confused me for some time> Are all J7/mig-21 of Egypt Air Force are retired?

No, a considerable number are still in service, the majority have been retired though. They are due to be retired completely by 2015-2016. They are currently attached to the Air Defence command carrying out a point defence role, along side being an advanced trainer.

Everything has been decided except for the price.

What amateur military enthusiasts (us) think the EAF needs may be completely different to what the EAF actually need. If there was a need for any other fighter than the Mig-29M then we would have requested it. That still doesn't rule out signing for another fighter with the Russians, this is the first of a series of deals.

How does Egypt service the Russian equipment ?

Specifically does Egypt have a Engine rebuild factory for the Mig-29 ?

MOSCOW: Russia and Egypt are nearing a $3-billion arms purchase agreement that will be financed by Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, a Moscow newspaper reported on Friday.

The two sides have already either "initialled or signed" contracts for Egypt's purchase of Mig-29 fighters, air and coastal defence systems, Mi-35 attack helicopters and smaller arms, the Vedomosti daily quoted two Russian government sources as saying.

The report came out one day after talks in Moscow between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Egyptian army chief Abdel Fattah al-Sisi's, the North African country's likely new head of state.

Cairo has turned to Moscow, which was its main arms supplier in the 1960s and early 1970s, after Washington cut back assistance to its regional ally over the army-backed overthrow in July of democratically elected Islamist president Mohammad Morsi.

How does Egypt service the Russian equipment ?

All service works are carried out by the Arab Organisation for Industrilisation, everything from routine maintenance to complete overhauls of Russian as well as US or French equipment is carried out in Egypt.

Specifically does Egypt have a Engine rebuild factory for the Mig-29 ?

Specifically for the Mig-29, no. All the infrastructure required to accommodate a new fighter will be installed though. There are engine rebuild factories for our other fighters though.

. . . . .
The MiG the Syrians wanted to buy were MiG-31s, the MiG-29s were supposed to go through an upgrade of their already existing MiG-29s fleet.
MiG-31 never were sell and was not supplied ouside USSR. These must have been the new MiG-29.
