correct... and those princely states in turn ruled the people in their lands, essentially on behalf of the britishers.

the last princely state to wage big battle against the british was the mysore kingdom under tipu sultan... after that, no one like him really...

I think it was Kerala Varma Pazhassi Raja in South India and even Maharajah Duleep Singh of Lahore.

i didn't mean that.

i meant that tipu sultan was unique... he was the most transnational of all historic south asian rulers... be that ashok or be that mughals... i meant that tipu was the biggest enemy of the britishers, and on a wider basis too... kings come and kings go, but leaders like tipu are unique in history.

We better not derail this thread.

USSR is history and i don't think it can be revived again. What we are seeing in Crimea is like a direct violation of the sovereignty of Ukraine.

People of India are united and they all stand together and will not let anyone to interfere in the territorial integrity and sovereignty of India.
After democratic referendum, in which, using the right to self-determination of the United Nations, the Crimea was reunited with Russia.
Unfortunately, Putin did not send troops into the territory of New Russia - it might prevent bloodshed. However, our people are able to win independentl and freedom and expel the junta invaders from the territory of free Novorossia.

That Referendum was held when tensions and chaos were very high in Kyiv. And by the way United Nations have rejected that referendum and even annexation of Crimea. Russian Federation troops were already stationed in Crimea after the Kharkiv pact which was way before the referendum.

Not recognized now - will recognize in 10 or 20 years. China was not recognized for a long time, Palestine also. In our world many unrecognized states - that does not mean that the people of these countries did not have the right to independence and their own opinions.
Ukraine for me and for my fellow citizens died on May 2, when they burned alive dissidents who opposed the junta.
Me and my fellow citizens are not interested in recognition of the West, or anyone else, we are interested in the actual independence and freedom. In the near future, when the world will once again be multipolar, recognition of Novorossia will be 100%.
Russian can be either the best friends or the worst enemies. Kiev junta chose enmity.
Junta hates Lenin and Stalin and communism in general. But in this case, they must return the lands gifted to them by the Communists. Lenin gave them Novorossia, Stalin - Western Ukraine. If they are independent, then let them return gifts of Communists to Russia and Poland.

Occupation of Palestine is a different issue and its the longest occupation of the whole nation but the case of Crimea is different which is violation of its integrity and sovereignty. Ethnic Russians were transferred in Crimea after 1954 and now its like those Ethnic Russians have become resident of Crimea and have decided the fate of Crimea. The same was happened in Georgia and it can happen in any of the Ex SSR republics where there is a large Russian population , it can even happens in United States or even in United Kingdom if your logic is applied. This is where International law are there to protect sovereignty and integrity of the countries. We are living in 2014 and in all this its the lifes of the ordinary people which gets destroyed and they lost everything from families to peace of heart etc.

In South Ossetia, there was no Russian people, there were only 200 Russian peacekeepers.
Russians living in the Crimea since the end of the 18th century, when the Crimea was conquered by the Russian army.
New Russia proclaimed sovereignty, using right to self-determination, according to the UN. Consequently, we believe the presence of the troops of the junta on our sovereign land as occupation. However, sooner or later we will drive them out to the Ukraine.

Ossetian people region was divided during the USSR rule and when USSR was disintegrated that time again it was divided into North and South ossetia. so case of Ossetia is some what different but still Ethnic Russians are living even in Ossetia region now in large numbers.

Ethnic Russian started to come to Crimea after 1954 draft in which Crimea was transferred to Ukraine. There are many records on this subject and it was basically comes under the section of restriction of internal immigration within USSR.

In South Ossetia, Ossetians living (70%), Georgians (27%). All other nations make 3% of the population. There are no Russinas there in large numbers.
Crimea used their right to self-determination in a democratic referendum. In Crimea, unlike the former south-east of Ukraine locals perceived to be part of Ukraine as unfair. Moreover, they believed that the Crimea was occupied by Ukraine (even before maidan). I know this for sure, because I was there a few times. They always said "go to Ukraine," because they do not consider themselves part of Ukraine.
New Russia began the struggle for independence only after Ukraine refused to initiate a dialogue about the federalization and the status of the Russian language. After Odessa on May 2 issue of federalization was ended. Instead federalization began the struggle for independence.
New Russia - a beautiful country and deserves to be free, happy and independent.

Crimea was part of New Russia since the 1700s when the Ottoman Empire ceded Crimea to Russia after losing war.

Ottoman Empire retook it in 1858 and then again lost it and even during the first world war , there were battles around Crimea but what all that have to do with Russian Federation annexation of Crimea from Ukraine in 21st Century ?

In South Ossetia, Ossetians living (70%), Georgians (27%). All other nations make 3% of the population. There are no Russinas there in large numbers..

Ossetia was divided into North and South and in 1922 South Ossetian Autonomous Oblast was created and in 1924 North Ossetian autonomous oblast was created which existed till 1936 and then incorporated in Russia . So basically Ossetia was divided between Russians and Georgians which was somewhat similar as Crimea was divided between Russians and Ukrainians

That referendum is not accepted by United Nations because it was done after Crimea was under control of Russian Forces.

The reason why majority of countries rejected the Russian Federation annexation was quite simple because it would be used against majority of countries in future where sovereignty and territorial integrity would be violated by powerful countries and smaller and weaker countries will cease to exit.

If another vote is done today, I'm sure less than 50% of countries would vote yes because they know Russia will never give Crimea back to Ukraine.

One of the countries that voted yes was Libya. Gaddafi would have voted no. The US illegally invaded Libya and did regime change to the US's favor. Where is Libyan government today? They lost Tripoli to Islamists. Where are Americans to help Libya now?

Saakashvili attacked South Ossetia. In South Ossetia, there were no Russian settlements. There were only Russian peacekeepers. South Ossetia declared independence from Georgia in 1993. Now residents of South Ossetia want to reunion with Russia. Sooner or later it will happen.
It does not matter that the UN did not recognize the sovereignty of the Crimea or the New Russia. Will recognizes in its time. They did not recognize China for 25 years.
The main thing is that the right to self-determination of the people of New Russia is guaranteed by the UN Charter. Therefore, our position in the struggle for independence - is perfectly legal.

Even during 91-92 , the same happened in which South Ossetias militias declared Independence and were backed by Russian troops and the same we are seeing in Ukraine now be it in Crimea and be it in Donbass etc.

This Ethnic card is being played in all the Ex SSR republics and this is the reason neighboring countries are afraid of this and this is in real spoiling people to people relations and creating hate and injustices. And all this in real can backfire for Russian Federation because Russian Federation is home of many ethnic groups.
