Russia threw itself behind the need for a new Security Council resolution on Iranââ¬â¢s nuclear program on May 3 and said it hoped the measure could be adopted before a May 8 meeting of major power foreign ministers in New York.
Moscowââ¬â¢s new U.N. ambassador, Vitaly Churkin, said Russia had problems with some elements of a draft resolution put forward by France, Britain and the United States but had backed the decision to go ahead with council consideration.
"Hopefully, we all like to do the hard work ourselves and leave the big things for our ministers," Churkin told reporters when asked whether a council vote could come in time for Mondayââ¬â¢s ministerial meeting on Iran.
