Replacing old J-7 jets & J-8 jets

Old J-7 & J-8 regiments are ready for replacement and this is the biggest single issue on PLAAF.

So what are the options for replacing this old jets?

Is FC-1 aircraft (JF-17) is the answer....

or will it be a new aircraft?

322 - J-7 jets in service - Need replacement

180 - J-8 jets in service - Need replacement

Let's Discuss.......

Dear Sri Lankan you forgot Q-5 many of them are worth replacement.

By the way J-7s variants are more then 322 apprx 471.

All these J-7/Q-5/J-8 variants will be replaced in due time.
J-10A/B-S are most likely to replace almost if not all of many J-7/variants and many of Q-5s.
JH-7/A perhaps are in process or already replaced close to 200 Q-5 variants as a Fighter Bomber and Naval role for PLANAF. It seems the initial production and later JH-7A and underdevelopment JH-7B are bound for Naval Q-5s replacements.
Further more seem Many Q-5s will be replaced by J-11 variants as well.

We can go and and configure and replace them here, in the end it is PLAAF and PLANAF to decide.

FC-1 is not the answer but it can be acquired in numbers perhaps as many as 100 to replace some of J-7s on immediate basis due to low cost and easy replacement. And it certainly is a considerable upgrade over J-7.

J-7MF, J-8F, FC-1, L-15----Competition in the rest of the order.

You can not replace all the J7 and J8s with the J10 and J11s with a 1 to 1 ratio, its not necessary since a J10 has several times bigger efficence than a J7.The problem here is that the J7 ,J8 and Q5 are to maitain a proper size of the pilots. You can easilly produce a J10 but its difficult to get a good pilot.I would say the PLA needs to maitain a 1200 fighter and boomber fleet which includes 400 J11s,400 J10s and 250 JH7A and 150H6s.The rest,to be retired and keep the pilots in reserve.

How can merely 1200 planes compete with the USAF? They have thousands of F-15 and F-16. 1500 for air force and 800 for navy is what we have now and it should not be decreased. It is EASY to decrease but increasing is PROVOCATIVE so we should avoid all steps that decrease our air force size. Within near future we'll probably keep newer J-8 models flying.

Air Force

200 J-8F
300 J-11
400 J-10
200 J-20
300 JH7A
150 H6

Navy

100 Su-30
150 J-10
200 J-8F
200 JH7A
200 J-15

is more reasonable IMO.

I believe during the prelude to war the numbers of aircrafts produced will be increased very significantly.

I would not be very surprised if the numbers of J-10's for example would be increased to thousands.

The only problem is training that many excess pilots. China should really ramp up pilot training programs and get them all used to advanced fighter aircrafts right now during peace time.

What exactly do you think the L-15 is for :D :D :D.

JF-17 is certainly the cheapest option if china wants to replace on a 1 to 1 ratio.

J-10s aren't that expensive either.

The J-7s should be phased out, but the newer J-8s should remain in service, because their performance are reported to be better than that of the F/A-18 and the F-16C. The J-7s and J-8s currently serve mainly in the PLANAF.

The J-7s are in service only because of their huge numbers and their potential as Lead-in Fighter-Trainers.

Current PLANAF fighter aircraft (without J-7):
- J-11BH/S
- J-10BH (naval J-10B)
- JH-7A
- Su-30MK2
- J-8

Near future PLANAF fighter aircraft:
- JH-7B (would replace JH-7A and Su-30MK2)
- J-15 (would replace all J-8 versions)
- J-10C (would replace all Su-30MK2 and J-8 versions)

All speculations, infact such threads have absolutely no answer unless word comes directly from PLAAF/PLANAF.

My thoughts ALmost ALL of the old inventory would be replaced in due time we need not worry, J-15 is carrier borne fighter naval specific, why would it replace J-8 as an interceptor, unless PLANAF has clearly outline the duties for J-15 as interceptors.

China's Naval Air Force fighter is J-8.
If PLAN selected carrier-based pilots......China's aircraft carrier requires Naval Air Force to provide pilots.

It is also serving in the PLAAF.
J-15 Flying Shark/JH-7A/B would be the future of PLANAF apart from Stealth Projects. Not sure about MK2 or talked about project J-10C unless we see it.

All J-7 and J-8 should be retired as soon as their air frame and engine lives expire instead of waiting for a new jet on a one for one replacement basis.

If there is no expectation of immediate war, production of J-10 should be run at peace time rate, and should be manufactured in blocks with improve capabilities over time.

What is more important is the flight hours of each pilot should be maintained at current level, or better still, they should log more flight hours which can be achieved by having more pilots sharing one aircraft and improve on ground maintenance and turn-over time.

In times of need, I believe the aircraft factories can easily turn out 2 or 3 times more planes per month than current rate. But you can't produce experienced and well trained pilots in short time.

I'm sure the PLAAF knows its business and is pursuing the most efficient course. Why not just watch as it happens instead of speculating.
