Iran opens large-scale onshore wind farm with 50 MW of capacity

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani has opened one of the country’s largest onshore wind farms in a region northwest of the country.
The Aqkand Wind Farm, located around 200 kilometers from Tabriz, the capital of East Azerbaijan province, came on line on Wednesday after Rouhani ordered its opening via video conference.
The €57mn project, which involves 20 huge turbines, can reach 40 percent of its capacity of 50 megawatts (MW) to generate 175 gigawatt hours of electricity a year. That would be enough to power 104,000 homes in Minaeh, a major city in East Azerbaijan, and its surrounding regions.
The two-year development, construction and operation of the wind farm were led by The Mapna Group, Iran’s largest energy engineering and construction company which is known for manufacturing giant high-quality turbines.
About 200 staff will look after the operations and maintenance of the wind farm over its 20-year lifespan.
The IRNA news agency said 100 more jobs will be created on the wider chain of the electricity industry in the region.
A local official hailed the opening of the wind farm as a major success in Iran’s move toward better use of renewable energy sources.
Syndicate member says electricity-rich Iran should have exports increased
A syndicate member says electricity-rich Iran should move to increase its exports to the neighbors.
Afshin Milani said the electricity generated through the farm would have needed 50 million liters of diesel and 125,000 cubic meters of water a year if it was to come from conventional power plants.
The official said the farm also helps prevent the release of 125,000 tons of carbon dioxide each year.
Iran has made great strides over the past years to develop its renewable electricity sector.
The country currently operates more than 850 MW in renewables capacity, mostly in the form of wind and solar power plants.
Iran’s largest wind farm, with a capacity of 61.4 MW, is located to the west of the capital Tehran in the province of Qazvin.

Iran says capacity of renewables has grown by five times in the past six years.
Iran is speeding up efforts for development of renewable energy sector as latest data show electricity generation capacity form the renewables has reached 841 megawatts (MW).
The Ministry of Energy said in a report on Wednesday that renewable power capacity in Iran had grown by five times since 2013, when the current administrative government took office for a first time.
It said a total of 120 megawatt-scale renewable power plants are active in Iran, including 55 solar farms that generate more than three terawatt hours (TWh) of electricity and 19 wind farms with around 2.6 TWh of capacity.
Total capacity from the renewables, including from hydroelectricity, biomass and thermal waste recycling, is expected to hit 1,000 MW by March, said the report.
Scientific studies suggest that Iran can increase electricity generation from the renewables to up to 80,000 MW, of which around 80 percent can come from the solar energy.
Report shows Iran loses $80 mln a year in water utility leakage
A 12%-leakage in the Iranian water utility network causes the country some $80 million a year.
The government has defined a target of 4,000 MW for 2021 when its current term comes to an end. An umbrella development document stipulates that Iran should generate 5,000 MW of renewable power by March 2022.
Increase in renewable capacity can also allow Iran to free up a significant amount of natural gas burnt in thermal power plants and feed it to export pipelines.
Government estimates show that power plants consumed around 62 billion cubic meters of natural gas over the past Iranian year ending in March 2019. That is nearly three times the current amount of gas exported from Iran.

Iran says monthly production of renewable electricity topped 4 GWh in late March.
Iran’s Ministry of Energy says production of electricity from renewable sources exceeded four gigawatt hours (GWh) in late March 2020.
The ministry’s news service Paven said in a Monday report that renewable power along with the electricity saved through the grid during the Persian calendar month ending March 19 reached a total of 4 billion and 496 kilowatt hours.
It said the renewable saved the country some 1,277 million cubic meters of fossil fuels and a total of 989 million liters of water.
The report said production from the sector prevented the release of 3,072 metric tons of greenhouse gases in the monthly period.
It said total capacity of power generation from renewable sources in Iran is currently standing at 885 megawatts, meaning that the sector’s output at full capacity could exceed 7.75 terawatt hours (TWh) each year.
The report said that the government is completing construction for another 345 megawatts of capacity in new renewable power plants.
Iran has a total power generation of more than 85 gigawatts, or over 744 TWh a year, of which a tiny portion, just more than one percent, comes from the renewable.
A majority of Iranian power plants are of the gas-fired combined-cycle type which use massive amounts of natural gas and water to generate electricity.
Actual production of electricity in Iran is nearly 300 TWh each year, which is more than a third of the total installed capacity.
Wind and solar energy account for a bulk of production in the Iranian renewable sector, around 80 percent, with the government planning to build a series of massive wind and solar farms across the country in the upcoming years.

Traitor government only achieved 20% of the obliged annual increase of electricity production, cause they wasted their limited budget on fancy, expensive and unstable renewable energies during the peak of sanctions.
