Raytheon Integrated Defense Systems, Woburn, Massachusetts, is being awarded a sole-source contract in the amount of $2,271,181,543 under the Foreign Military Sales (FMS) program to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA). The contract type will be a hybrid firm-fixed-price, fixed-price-incentive-fee, cost-plus-award-fee and cost-plus-incentive-fee contract. Under this production contract, the contractor will provide seven Army/Navy Transportable Surveillance and Control Model 2 radars, radar spares, obsolescence design, sustainment services and initial contractor logistics support for KSA. The work will be performed in Woburn, Massachusetts. The performance period is June 26, 2020, to Aug. 31, 2027. KSA FMS funds in the amount of $2,271,181,543 will be used to fund this effort. The Missile Defense Agency, Redstone Arsenal, Alabama, is the contracting activity (HQ0862-20-C-0002).

Countering the Growing Ballistic Missile Threat

The AN/TPY-2 is a missile defense radar that can detect, track and discriminate ballistic missiles.

It operates in the X-band of the electromagnetic spectrum. This enables it to see targets more clearly and distinguish between an actual menace and non-threats, like launch debris.

Two Modes, One Steady Defense
AN/TPY-2 can operate in two modes: Forward-based mode and Terminal mode.

In Forward-based mode, the radar detects ballistic missiles after they are launched.

In Terminal mode, the radar helps guide interceptors toward a descending missile to defeat the threat. Most notably when operating in Terminal mode, AN/TPY-2 leads the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense ballistic missile defense system by guiding the THAAD missile.

Proven Performance Against Ballistic Missiles
AN/TPY-2 has a record of flawless performance against all classes of ballistic missiles.

Just 7 radars worth 2.27 billion must be made on gold and diamonds . Joke aside it is a long range surveillance radar with range probably between 1000-2000 Km. Basically serves as an early warning against incoming bogies like drones, missiles and even fighter jets. One radar alone probably consumes power around 3-5 MWatts making it very expensive to operate but for a country like saudia shouldnt be an issue at all.

It is part of THAAD BMD

The estimated range of THAAD missiles is 125 miles (200 km), up to an altitude of 93 miles (150km) although exact figures are still classified. A complete THAAD battery will have around six launch vehicles, each with eight missiles, two mobile tactical operations centres (TOCs) and the AN/TPY-2 ground-based radar (GBR). This is a long-range, very high-altitude active electronically scanned array (AESA) radar provided by Raytheon which has a range up to 2,900 miles (4,700km).

Considering the persians place an inordinate amount of faith in their BM’s and seem willing to use them it makes sense for the Saudis to have these available (especially since the Iron dome deal fell through as it was to follow onto an Arrow 3 deal).

What is not realized is the massive vulnerability of petrochemical facilities to attack and their explosive nature affect all over(pun intended).

Some of Abu Dhabi’s facilities are vast and close enough to the shore that you could launch a scud from Iran and it would still make a dent with its terrible CEP under 5 minutes of flight time.

Abu Dhabi deployed THAAD a long time ago, and are the launch customers for falcon air defense system.

I had to get security clearance to visit one of these facilities a few years ago, and saw what sat on the outskirts which did not look like anything listed on common sources.

With that much range they can cover pretty much every corner of KSA.

Would you care to elaborate, openly or privately? Your cryptic msg escapes me.

What surprises me is at the slow speed they are doing it.
