India could consider buying more Sukhoi-30 fighters if the $25 billion proposed deal to buy 126 Rafale jets from France collapsed, a top government official said.

India had selected Rafale fighters over Eurofighter Typhoons in January 2012 after French firm Dassault Aviation emerged as the lowest bidder for the world’s biggest fighter contract. But negotiations have yielded little progress with both sides haggling over clauses in the proposed contract for nearly three years.

The official attributed the delay in the fighter project to France reneging on “key conditions” laid down in the global tender for acquiring the jets. He indicated India had left its options open for buying the Su-30s if the deal with France fell through.

If the Rafale deal is settled, Dassault will supply 18 fighters to the Indian Air Force in flyaway condition, while the remaining 108 will be licence produced by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited.

Until recently, there were major differences between the French firm and HAL over responsibility for the aircraft to be built in India. But HAL sources on Wednesday said the differences had been ironed out and talks between Dassault and the ministry were in final stage.

In September, IAF chief Air Chief Marshal Arup Raha had told HT that it was critical to keep the Rafale fighter deal on schedule as the air force could not afford any more delays.

A parliamentary panel had recently flagged concerns about the IAF’s depleting combat capability in the context of tackling a two-front challenge – euphemism for a combined threat from China and Pakistan.

The top government official also made it clear that under existing rules, there was no scope for the Eurofighter consortium, backed by four European countries, to re-enter the race to sell its Typhoon fighters to India. The Germany-led consortium had come up with a revised proposal -- sweetened with a discount -- to sell 126 Typhoons to India.

Interesting... So EF is out no matter what comes out of the ongoing negotiations.

Looks like a message to Dassault to comply with RFP or, risk loosing another deal. Good decision. MRCA is loosing its importance with every passing month. Longer Dassault drags this, easier will be for Parrikar to scrap the deal.

I don't think so. The deal is a necessity for both sides no two ways about it.

Interesting the IAF has changed their stance now from:

"a report in a certain section of the media indicating IAF will opt for Sukhoi-30 if Rafale deal falls flat as on 08 Apr 2013. The IAF strongly denies such report. The CNC (Contract negotiations committee) process for acquisition of 126 MMRCA is underway and there is no thought process for any procurement as a ‘back up’ as reported."
LIVEFIST: Negotiations For Rafale On Track, No Back-up Plan: IAF

This is silly anyway, no way are extra MKIs a suitable replacement for the Rafales, they are FAR too expensive to maintain and fly.

Extra 60 MKI and 60 Tejas MK-2 should do the job .

If this deal fails Dassault would shutdown Rafale production with loss.

Well.Final decisions would be at the hands of Govt.
Rafale has costs around 1000+ crore.
But Sukhois still have only 400 crore.
Let see what would be the final decision.

We have seen conflicting reports almost on weekly basis.
We don't know exactly what question was asked by media and how parrikar answered

There is no credibility in such news now .

Perhaps Russians are spending very much for false news.Diplomatically this wouldnt be that good.US will surely piss off if they heard this.

Write my word.

Americans will get this contract if Dassault is canceled.

zero chance.
Dassault already agreed for ToT but some other clauses causes problem to them.
And There is no confirmation in this news.

Some say it's the competitor who is doing , some say its indian tactic to reduce the price , whatever it is ,we just have to wait for official confirmation.

America has got nothing to do with MMRCA .

The french are backtracking on their commitments, the deal is too expensive to make sense. The Rafale philosophy of high sophistication, low maintenance man hours doesn't suit India as India is not short of pilots(esp with civil aviation not in good condition) or maintenance crews.

Improving the SU-30 serviceability, buying used mirages and mig-29's and upgrading them, fastracking LCA MK2 will fullfill most of the MRCA needs, the remaining cutting edge needs of going deep into heavily contested airspace and conducting strikes will probably will never be used as it is "Gen.Gulia Douhet" lame logic which never worked in any war.

The squadrons are falling because the IAF is going for "more capable fighters" and by logic they should compensate for numbers. No one knows when and how the 45-55 sqd strength benchmark for IAF was determined and how relevant it is today with aircraft becoming painfully expensive to buy and maintain.

Su-30MKI's do not provide PAF's upgraded, and super lethal, F-16s block 50/52s armed with best BVRs in the world...

PAF's F-16s can locate and track Su-30s with ease and can confront them...

Rafale's EW suit and superior avionics would really give PAF F-16s a run for their money...

There is no threat from your 18 odd f-16 blk 52 gap is too wide against 216 mki as for EW suits Israelis are known for their avionics they use it on their F-15.even with current strength IAf superior to any threat PaF can pose today or in this decade itself
