As you know, GCC has a mutual defense pact, those are not necessarily to defend Qatari borders but as well KU or KSA.

UAE as well have a strong land force although it has no borders with potential enemies.

Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain and UAE doesn't need to boost their land power strength because there is no enemies to confront beside Iran. The naval strength are the most important since all Gulf countries are confronted by Iran through the sea in the Persian(Arabian) Gulf. In term of military, navy and airforce; Iran is more bigger and powerful but with the GDP, HDI and resources; Saudi is more powerful so just don't don't underestimate Iran's military. However, with all the expensive fighter Jets and other toys owned by the Saudi and the Gulf countries the Persian will have to think twice before starting a war.

The monarchs are just spending the petrodollars on the countries that are buying their Oil and Natural Gas. Hoping the countries dont start to focus their attention on Qatar.

Qatar is a small island .. what the hell do they need armor and artillery divs for unless they plan to go out and conquer other nations ?

As a wahabi you should understand their logic, I'm surprised.

Anyway, an arab leader/general/strongman usually believes that having pieces on a board will help him win the board game. They spend 0.000000001% of their time and brain power on strategy. Saddam had jets coming out of every hole, literally!! He burried them in the ground when push came to shove. By the end of the Iran-Iraq war he had a 5:1 ratio of many types of hardware! Look at all the wars arabs have faught. They always have more hardware than their enemies, but they can never win or gain anything from their wars. Half the time most of their jets and tanks get bombed on the ground in the first few days of any war.

not smaller than Kuwait....u know what happened there.
Qatar needs to build its defences............

Kuwait actually has a LAND BORDER ...

qatar doesn't !

artillery can not be used for asymmetrical warfare, artillery and armor needs kilometers of formations and infantry and other support.

This equation doesn't sound right !

These are not for them - these for the mercenaries that will show up -- there is a whole new security infrastructure going up in Qatar, complete with their own US style Dept of Homeland Security

Whole ME is on mad buying spree . Every country is making huge deals for very sophisticated hardware.
Just to boost up their drfense or, something really fishy going on in background..?

Qatar Strikes Deal To Buy Tanks, Artillery from Krauss-Maffei Wegmann

LONDON — Krauss-Maffei Wegmann has secured a 1.89 billion euro ($2.47 billion) deal with Qatar to supply artillery systems and main battle tanks, the German armaments maker announced April 18.

The deal involves delivery of 24 PzH 2000 155mm self-propelled artillery systems and 62 Leopard 2 main battle tanks along with associated training and other support items.

Purchase of the German systems is part of a wider modernization of the 8,500-strong Qatari army which could entail procurement of other equipment.

KMW said in a statement its vehicles would replace outdated artillery and tanks supplied by France and South Africa.

The decision to buy the German company’s equipment will be a setback for rival bidders for the contract, particularly Nexter of France who had offered the second hand Leclerc main battle tanks and other equipment in what is traditionally a market dominated by the French.

The armored vehicle purchases are part of what Defense News reported March 4 is at least a 20 billion euro equipment shopping list spread across Qatar’s army, navy and air force. Fast jets, helicopters, corvettes and missiles are on the procurement list as Qatar modernists its military capabilities in line with moves by the Gulf state to play a greater role in the region and beyond.
