Qatar nears talks to buy ‘unpopular’ Rafale fighter jets

Why does Qatar want to buy the enormously expensive Rafales? What is their threat perception? I think the JF-17 would have been a far better proposition. They could buy twice or thrice the number of JFs, which are no pushovers.

Qatar hardly will last a couple of hours .. AT MOST.

They can buy all the DR or F117s for that sake; the land mass is too small to defend.

They are not that small in the context of the GCC or the Arab and Muslim world, they are part of it and any strength they might add is for the overall defense of the latters.
It will be good to see some Rafales in the middle east, mostly if they come with some TOT, Grippen will be a good choice too with TOT, or even some F-16 Block 60, although The GCC should not by exclusively from the US, for some known reason, diversification is very good at this stage, Russian and Chinese options for their best fighter planes should not be taken out.
Pakistan JF-17 Thunder Block 2 +3 should be a very good addition, may be 2 Squadrons, but should come in as JVs for bigger production are concluded and inked with some bigger Arab states.

They have to remain part of GCC they can't afford to be out of it with GCC only 36 Fighter Jets and 4 to 6 FAC like the one Egypt are getting these days will be enough for their forces

Don't forget about the possibilities that the UAE is going to buy Rafale as well.
