The security of Russia's air and naval facilities in Syria is reliably ensured by the S-300 and S-400 air defense systems, chairman of the Russian upper house defense and security committee Viktor Ozerov told Sputnik on Friday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — He said the systems "reliable ensure the safety of our servicemen" in Syria.

"Regardless of today's US attack on the Syrian air force air base, our air base [in Hmeymim] and logistics center in Tartus are secured from the sea and from the air by S-300 and S-400 systems," Ozerov said.

Earlier in the day, the Russian Defense Ministry announced its plans to bolster and increase the effectiveness of the air defense system in Syria after the United States carried out attacks against a Syrian armed forces airfield.

The ministry said that the Russian air defense combat units in Syria are on duty round-the-clock. The S-400, the S-300 and the Pantsir air defense systems protect the Russian air group at the Hmeymim airfield from the air, the Russian ministry said.

On Thursday night, the United States launched 59 Tomahawk cruise missiles at the Syrian military airfield in Ash Sha’irat, located about 40 kilometers (25 miles) from the city of Homs. US President Donald Trump said the attack was a response to the alleged chemical weapon use in Syria's Idlib on T uesday, which Washington blames on the Syrian government.

The S-400 system was deployed at the Hmeymim following the Turkish Air Force's November 2015 downing of a Russian Su-24 bomber on the Syrian-Turkish border.

In October 2016, the Russian Defense Ministry said that a S-300 system was sent to Syria to ensure the safety of the Russian naval base in Tartus. According to media reports, the system deployed in Syria is S-300V4 — NATO designation SA-23 Gladiator — that is capable of striking tactical and strategic aircraft, medium-range ballistic missiles, tactical missiles as well as cruise missiles.

According to this Russian General, it takes time to prepare missiles to perform such attacks, and as such these missiles were prepared for the attack before the chemical attack on civilians. Any thoughts?

They HAVE TO BE rdy at any given TIme... That's their main purpose by being outside US sea...

He is a pathological liar like all Russian generals. For example in this video he also lied that only 23 Tomahawks reached airbase.

Well done USA, enough is enough.
Here's a special naval tribute.

The airfield located some 120 kilometers away from Syria’s capital Damascus is one of the major bases of the Syrian Air Force.

The airfield has a three-kilometer runway and 40 hardened shelters.

The Syrian government forces have never lost control of the airbase since the outbreak of the civil war in 2011.

Admiral William McRaven, who's the author of Make Your Bed: Little Things That Can Change Your Life... And Maybe The World, explains why the Trump administration's decision to attack a base controlled by the Syrian government was the right decision. Following is a transcript of the video.

I think in the case of our reaction to Syria this time it was the exact right thing to do. It was appropriate. It was, as we say, proportional, recognizing that the heinous act conducted by the Syrians in dropping the sarin — that is, I'm not sure I would say it's always proportional. That was a terrible act, but our response was again, appropriate and proportional and the right thing to do.

My expectation now is we will have a government-to-government discussion with the Russians to say, "Look, you are running out of options in terms of support to Assad, you need to move Assad on because we, the Americans, are still prepared to take the next couple of steps." And, again, I would hope those discussions are happening.

It's a long way, if ever, before we would put boots on the ground in a Syrian civil war context. That's not to say, we obviously have boots on the ground now fighting ISIS. This is a different set of circumstances when you start talking about going after or going against the Syrian government. My opinion is Assad has to go, you bet.

Yeah F***.

No wonder you live in England bro. Unfortunately you know nothing about USA and it's policy in Muslim world otherwise you wouldn't be happy of murdering Syrian soldiers

Yes I was born and raised in England, and it's lovely here.
What have drone strikes in Pakistan got to do with anything? The last few wiped out horrible people. Yes some have hit innocent folks, but then the government and army agreed to these strikes.
Murdering Syrian soldiers? What the same ones murdering, raping and pillaging their own people. I still back them against ISIS but this chemical weapons attack was evil.
