Posters warn Kashmiri Pandits to leave Valley or ‘face death’

Posters threatening Kashmiri Pandits have surfaced near the transit accommodations for government employees in south Kashmir’s Pulwama district asking them to leave the Valley or be ready to face consequences.

Typed on an unsigned letterhead of a little known organisation called Lashkar-e-Islam, the posters have asked “all migrants/RSS agents to leave Kashmir or face death.”

“No space for Kashmiri Pandits who want another Israel in Kashmir to kill Kashmiri Muslim,” the posters said.

The poster has gone viral after it was shared on micro blogging site twitter by Panun Kashmir leader and film maker Ashok Pandit as “message for all the pseudo liberals, white-collared terrorists & other pimps of terrorists.”

While police confirmed the presence of the posters in the area, the SP in charge of Pulwama, Rayees Mohammad Bhat said it could be the handiwork of miscreants.

“We also got the information about presence of a few posters in the area but we believe it is some miscreants who want to create fear among the minority community,’’ Bhat said.

    Lashkar-e-Islam first made news after they threatened owners of telecommunication towers in North Kashmir’s Sopore area in May 2015. The threats were followed by killings as well. The group which was earlier believed to be a front for Hizbul Mujahideen and Lashkar-e-Taiba was, however, denounced by both the militant organisations after the killings.
    
    Many Kashmiri Pandit government employees who had joined under the Prime Minister’s package last year, had sought transfers to Jammu or other parts of the country some time earlier fearing a backlash in the Valley. According to locals, most families have left the transit accommodation.
    
    A few weeks ago, police had denied reports that the migrant camps at Haal Pulwama and Vesu in Anantnag and some places in north Kashmir were attacked by the mobs. Cases were registered against some social media users for spreading false news of attacks and killings of Kashmir Pandits.
    
    Police sources say the posters against Kashmiri Pandits are part of a series of other poster campaigns by lesser known organisations in the area.

    “Some of the posters even warned people against joining the pro-freedom rallies. Some posters even asked woman not to venture out of their homes’’, an official said.
    
    A few days ago a relatively unknown group called ‘Sangbaz (stone pelter) association Jammu and Kashmir, Azad Kashmir’ had warned young girls against ridding two wheelers. The association said it “will burn both the vehicle and the female riders” if they are seen out on the roads “till the end of this fight.”

Kashmir is the unfinished agenda of partition plan of 1947 which has divided Pakistan and India into two separate independent states. Almost 14 million Hindus, Sikhs and Muslims were displaced during partition; they were forced to leave their homes. Sooner or later, the one hundred thousand Kashmiri Pandits (too) had to leave the predominantly Muslim Kashmir valley. They are lucky that unlike others', their exodus was facilitated (if not engineered) by the Indian Government, and they didn't have to suffer much.

The Kashmiri Pandits constituted no more than 5 % of the population of the Kashmir Valley.

Muslims too had suffered similar fate. For example, before partition, more than 35% of the population of the areas that constitute Indian Punjab now was Muslim. Today, Muslims make up less than 2% of the total population of Indian Punjab. And those 2% are not local Punjabis but Muslim laborers from other Indian provinces who have migrated to Indian Punjab.

So, Indian Hindus and Sikhs (too) drove out virtually every Muslim they could lay their hands on in Indian Punjab.

Well thats your opinion , the way kashmiri / media keep count of dead makes it look like they are more interested in driving mileage out of it rather than feeling any pain or regret over loss of life. Can you go over your map again, there are only 8 districts which had muslim majority by slender margins and those muslims crossed over to pakistan as it was nearer to border. They are all border districts.

To counter your argument , muslims stayed back in india and they are sizable in size , 180million nearly rivaling that of pakistan. As such your argument falls flat. Compare that to minorities in pakistan, you will see that the boot is on the other foot.

By the way kashmir valley makes only 15% of territory of J&K. Rest of the 85% of the state is still ok and they dont give a fig leaf for the trouble makers. Its like saying there is a uprising in quetta by balochis and entire balochistan be given freedom. good luck with ur logic

Before partition, more than 35% of the population of the areas that constitute Indian Punjab now was Muslim. Today, Muslims make up less than 2% of the total population of Indian Punjab. (And those 2% are not local Punjabis but Muslim laborers from other Indian provinces who have migrated to Indian Punjab). Those Muslims crossed over to Pakistan because they were forced to do so (Just like the Kashmiri Pandits), Even those 8 districts where Muslims were in majority were cleansed of the Muslim Population !! (Kashmiri Pandits, on the other hand, formed a tiny minority in Kashmir Valley)

No, it does not counter my argument. I gave the example of an Indian State (Eastern Part of Punjab) that was virtually cleansed of the Muslim Population. (Just like Kashmir Valley, a part of J&K, which was virtually cleansed of the Hindu Population) ...

As for your other Argument, those Muslims who were too poor to migrate (or those living in areas not affected much by the riots) did stay back in India. And similarly some Hindus stayed in Pakistan. As per 1951 census, they formed 1.6 % of the population of (East) Pakistan, Today, they make up around 2% of the total population. Their population (as a percentage of the total population) has actually increased over the last sixty years.

Moreover, More Muslims were forced to migrate to Pakistan than Hindus and Sikhs who were forced to migrate out of Pakistan (despite the fact that the Muslim formed only one-fourth of the Indian population).. Almost 4.7 million Hindus and Sikhs moved from (west) Pakistan to India whereas 6.5 million Muslims moved out from India to Pakistan in 1947.

The Kashmir Valley is home to almost half of the population of the Indian occupied state of Jammu and Kashmir.
