Death suspended CoronaVac research
The death that caused the suspension of research on the CoronaVac vaccine was the suicide of a 32-year-old volunteer, as indicated in the police report. The IML (Legal Medical Institute) report has not yet been concluded.
The case was used by Anvisa (National Health Surveillance Agency) to interrupt vaccine research that was led by the Butantan Institute, in partnership with the Chinese laboratory Sinovac. Anvisa claims that the decision was technical.
The decision caused surprise and irritation in health officials in the state of São Paulo, who classified the federal government’s decision as unfair. Discontent exists because those responsible for the research do not see suicide as an adverse effect related to the vaccine. They also say it is not the first death of CoronaVac volunteers.
At the beginning of the study, one person died in Porto Alegre – but the information was not widely disseminated. An investigation was opened and it was found that the volunteer had taken a placebo, a substance that does not have the active ingredient.
