PMO for allowing three neighbours to use Mongla
Asks MoS to take necessary steps
Syful Islam

The Prime Minister's Office (PMO) has asked the ministry of shipping (MoS) to take necessary steps for providing transit facilities to India, Nepal and Bhutan to use Mongla port, official said.

Prime Minister's economic affairs adviser Dr Mashiur Rahman conveyed the message in a recent letter to the shipping minister Shajahan Khan.

He mentioned that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina took the decision on the basis of a plea of the Khulna Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI).

India wants to use Bangladesh's seaports to carry goods to its seven sister states of Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland and Tripura.

Nepal and Bhutan are also interested to use the ports for facilitating their external trade.

Officials said the underused Mongla port will become busy and its earnings will significantly increase once India, Nepal, and Bhutan start using the port.

The government is looking for various options to enhance use of the seaport as per its capacity.

The KCCI suggested making mandatory handling of raw materials of factories located in Khulna, Rajshahi and Barisal division, and cent per cent import of fertiliser through Mongla port.

Talking to the FE Friday, Mongla Port Authority (MPA) chairman Riazuddin Ahmed welcomed the government's move to let the neighbouring countries use the seaport.

"We are ready to handle cargoes of India, Nepal and Bhutan. Almost half of the total capacity of the port now remains unused," he said.

In fiscal year 2015-16, the port handled some six million tonnes of goods against its capacity to handle 13 million tonnes of goods.

The port has handling capacity of 0.25 million TEUs (twenty feet equivalent units) of containerised goods while it handled nearly 43,000 TEUs of goods in last fiscal year, said the MPA chairman.

"On an average, only one or two ships stay in the port. Most of the anchorage points also remain unoccupied," Mr Ahmed said.

He said the port has been further raising its capacity and in next two three years, it will increase significantly.

The MPA chairman, quoting various studies, said containerised cargo handling of the port may see a big jump by 2018 when vehicles will start plying through the Padma Bridge.

Bangladesh has already granted transit and transhipment facility to neighbouring India. It is already carrying goods to its seven sister states using Ashuganj river port.

In June last year, Bangladesh and India signed a memorandum of understanding for letting Delhi use Chittagong and Mongla ports for movement of goods to and from India. But necessary agreement and protocols are yet to be finalised for implementation of the memorandum.

Mongla Port is good for Indian Meghalay and Assam, Nepal and Bhutan. For its own benefit India will allow corridor for Nepal and Bhutan.

We have signed BBIN agreement on reginal connectivity ... BBIN is committed to letting each other use their respective Infra. like roads, ports etc. Everycountry in the group can request every other country. e.g. Nepal can ask to use Kolkata port as well

Yes, you are right that a connectivity agreement was signed. But, in reality we can only propose and it is India who will think and decide whether to deliver or not. India is a problem for a positive turnout of regional connectivity. While BD keeps on delivering at the slightest request from India, India does not want to move away from its negative policies of keeping Nepal and Bhutan completely under its thumbs.

A connectivity to Mongla may ruin its influence on those pitiful countries. I think, this is what the Indian Bureaucrats have in their mind. It is an imposed love by force. Is India not following the Bombay film style foreign policy?

Incorrect. post BBIN india cannot stop them from requesting any Bdian or Indian port. It will be violation of agreement.

Many BD's are a bit annoyed that Nepal and Bhutan are not really viable markets for their "RMG"....so its all an Indian conspiracy.

Hasina knows better though.

Bd does not care about its market in Nepal and Bhutan. The market is a pittance and BD produces more of European grade apparels that fulfill the westerners' demands. On the contrary, Bd has allowed an uninterrupted flow of some of the farm goods from Nepal to BD market with a minimal duty imposed on them. This has very much delighted the businesses and farmers in that country.

You Indian guys need a slap when you boast about Indian policy that keep you in the rank of Acchyut. So, stop talking big about that India and read the news below that unfurls your real character. To the BD and also Indian posters: Please click how inhumanly India stopped Nepali goods entering Bangladesh. Shame on Indian Tikkiwalas!!

Give the value of this. Is it even available?

That was part of an overall bandh by Terai folk. India had no hand in that.

Now post me a link that shows the puny trade remains halted between BD and Nepal? Oh right you can't.

New nepal leader visiting which country first? Oh right....India. Nepalese earn much more money in India by open border policy than they can ever hope to trade with BD in next 100 years+.....they are not fools....you are a small side distraction.

BBIN for most part involves India benefiting from more integration of the area's economy. We will get Hasina to open up whatever we want since she knows whats good for her.

These fool Nepalese do not respect India. They go to India not because of love, but because of an equation of demand and supply between India and Nepal. But, they just hate you because you act as their savior and big DADA. Indian Tikkiwalas are inflexible by nature and they show this hazardous symptom when dealing with other smaller countries.

50% of them love India by default (they are Indian people basically) the rest are split....but very few hate outright.

Any aspiring Nepali comes to India...thats how it is....and we welcome them....no fences or BSF.

They are not a bunch of ingrates like you. They are our Dharmic brothers.

I see you still havent provided the trade figures for BD and Nepal. Was it more than 1 million dollars?

@Nilgiri, how long you want us to bear your chaste thumping? India is completely disliked by the Nepalese. They come now-a-days to BD for taking higher education in medicine and engineering instead of going to their fellow Hindu reliogionist in India. They shun India out of hate. And do not please upload those made in india links.
