the figure they gave probably is for a period of atleast 15 years(or may be it gave to total figure before they move to 6th gen),i.e. 2021-2036 @BDforever you can see that even if China makes some 50 jets per year,it'd take some 14 years to fulfill this order.but 50 jets a year is way too much.

not the size we're talking about.but then again,its all debatable.the level of automation,the need and the time frame along with complexity of the platform,everything is depend on it.see, J-10 entered into service 2004(assumed.the fact is they're producing it somewhere from 2002).in 10 years,they made some 260+ J-10,26 aircraft each.and they'll make some 1200.so,it is easily understandable that with all these aircrafts,they'll not shift their most production bases towards fifth gen.its not like the average is not achievable,but economically viable when you've small orders.you can see that India too isn't targeting much LCA per year,want to produce some 16-17 per year,which is pretty decent when you've to induct some 200.same goes for Rafale too.you can only shift massive amount of resouces when you've to make massive numbers.400 just doesn't cut it.

China is not stupid to waste so much resources building a fighter that would be nearly obsolete as it goes into service.

I think that the Chinese will build in excess of 1000 stealth fighters by 2030. They sure have the money for it as the Chinese economy is expected to surpass the US in size within a decade.

China is not stupid to waste so much resources building a fighter that would be nearly obsolete as it goes into service.

I think that the Chinese will build in excess of 1000 stealth fighters by 2030. They sure have the money for it as the Chinese economy is expected to surpass the US in size within a decade.

700 J-20s may be feasible. China is fully capable of retooling its production facilities and producing that many fighters on such a scale definitely lowers the per unit cost. Bear in mind that everything China has accomplished so far has been done with a military budget that's 2% of China's GDP (lower, percentage wise, than the US and India) and consistent with China's economic growth. China won't have to waste any forex on these fighters. China's economy only has to grow like it has and the money will keep coming.

I think people are forgetting a key concept here. "Purchase" is an American term since manufacturers like Lockheed Martin is a private firm and there is a layer of profit involved. Chinese military aircraft manufacturers are state firms, the Chinese army is essentially getting them at manufacturing price.

Correct me if I am wrong, but US is ordering 1763 F35s for their air force, 260 for their navy and 420 for their marine corps according to wiki. That's more than 2000 planes.

Do you think China cannot afford 700 planes? They are the 2nd largest economy and may surpass US in the future.
