Pipavav Shipyard Limited should construct second aircraft carrier for India

Well your plans seems good but you are forgetting one factor which is most important. ie. having 3-4 AC by 2020. Thats possible only if we start building another one now in pipapav since IAC will be finish its construction only by 2014.
We already have one AC which is refurbished to increase its life for the coming decade. INS Vikramaditya will be inducted 2012 and IAC 1 will be launched 2014-2015. That makes the number three. IAC2 work will start in mid 2011 and is supposed to be launched by 2015 and inducted by 2017. I don't see CSL facing any trouble.

.
Who are we planning to attack by building 4 AC's by 2020. I think Vikramaditya and IAC I and II should more than enough India needs for another 30-40 years. We need to spend money on other stuff too you know, like education, health facilities, food and infrastrucutre.. Since when Indians have become war mongers? or are we just making these tall claims to show off on PDF?:undecided:

Suddenly what happened to you? We will have 3 carriers by 2018. Not 4. Also our defence spending is minimum.

.
Well I relied on Wikipedia and gave you the source!

But yr point of contention was 200,000 tonnage, which is hitherto not possible anyway......so dont you digress from the tonnage factor.

110K DWT capacity is enough for buiding a Nimitz class aircraft carrier, which means CSL is more than capable of handling anything the Navy throws at them. Why waste money in upgrading a new shipyard when the present one is more than capable of handling both present and future needs.

Nah nah thats what I said , those 3 would be more than enough we need as far as Aircraft Carrier goes. Someone on the earlier page said how we should build more, thats what I was replying to, should have quoted him.

Pipavav is proud possession of India..Thanks to Modi..

The Company, Pipavav shipyard, then a wholly owned subsidiary of SKIL, was incorporated as Pipavav Ship Dismantling and Engineering Limited on October 17, 1997 under the Companies Act.

In April 2005, IL&FS, one of the leading infrastructure finance companies in India, became a shareholder, and the name of the Company was changed to Pipavav Shipyard Limited. Government of India controlled banking institutions EXIM Bank and IDBI also took stakes in PSL as well as mutual fund UTI.

In 2007, several other major financial players became shareholders in the form of foreign equity investors.

Here are the dimensions of the Nimitz Class Aircraft Carriers :

Displacement: 100,000 long tons
Length: Overall: 1,092 feet (332.8 m)
Waterline: 1,040 feet (317.0 m)
Beam: Overall: 252 ft (76.8 m)
Waterline: 134 ft (40.8 m)

What are the dimensions of CSL Dry Dock?

Also please advise if the 110K DWT is a Building Berth (where a ship is Launched) or a Dry Dock (where a ship is Floated-Out)

Don't know about the dimensions but from satellite images it looks big enough.

According to wiki ''The yard has delivered two of India ’s largest double hull Aframax tankers each of 95,000 DWT.''

Shipyards Directory - COCHIN SHIPYARD Ltd.

The repair dock of 270 x 45 x 12 M can accommodate ships up to 1,25,000 DWT. The dock has high capacity discharge pumps to drain it in less than three hours. It is served by three LLTT cranes, one of 40 T and two 10T capacity.

For your information :

1. The AV being built by CSL dimensions are 250 m X 43 m X 12 m

2. The Kiev Class “Admiral Gorshikov” dimensions are as follows :

Displacement: 45.400 tons
Length: Overall: 928.5 feet (283.0 m)
Waterline: 818.6 feet (249.5 m)
Beam: Overall: 167.3 ft (51.0 m)
Waterline: 107.3 ft (40.8 m)

This Kiev Class “Admiral Gorshikov” AC cannot be accommodated in CSL Dry Dock and as such the new Naval facility near Karwar is being provided with a suitable Dry Dock.

As such if the Indian Navy next Generation AC is of 65.000 Tons displacement then the CSL Dry Dock will have to be enlarged accordingly and it may not be economical to build a Dry Dock to build only One or Two AC ships.

In this respect Pipav is the only suitable and available Dock Yard for the next Generation 65.000 Tons size AC ships which has a suitable Dry Dock available - all ready to go.

@ Hutchroy
Thanx for the information. CSL can take the job of building LPDs then.

Welcome.

Of the bit of layman knowledge I have I think CSL can go up to Building Large Destroyers, Helicopter Carriers and Floating Dock Ships (LPDs) and as well as Oil Tankers for the Navy.

From the Google pictures at hand I find that the CSL Dry Docks have hardly any scope for increase in Length as well as Breadth.

.
^^^
IN has a plan to induct 4 LPDs of up to 20000 tons under buy and make category. I think CSL is about to get this order because of their experience but earlier i thought they must be busy with IAC 1 and 2 but now as you informed us that CSL dockyards are not big enough for IAC2, so i think CSL will definitely get order for 4 LPDs.
