Pfizer and Moderna show less efficacy against double mutant discovered in India

The World Health Organization (WHO) has said in its COVID-19 Weekly Epidemiological Update that vaccines by Pfizer and Moderna have shown decreased effectiveness against the double mutant variants discovered in India.

“Potential impacts of B.1.617 lineage on the effectiveness of vaccines or therapeutics, or reinfection risks, remain uncertain. Preliminary laboratory studies awaiting peer review suggest a limited reduction in neutralisation by antibodies; however, real-world impacts may be limited,” WHO said in its note.

"The resurgence in COVID-19 cases and deaths in India has raised questions on the potential role of B.1.617 and other variants (e.g., B.1.1.7) in circulation."

According to the note, outside of India, the United Kingdom has reported the largest number of cases sequenced as B.1.617 sublineages.

The global health agency cited three studies, all of which are awaiting peer review, that showed that antibodies generated by the vaccines developed by Pfizer and Moderna had a significant reduction in the ability to neutralize the mutant virus and its sublineages.

The World Health Organization has linked the massive surge in coronavirus cases in India to religious and political gatherings.

Globally, the coronavirus has now infected over 160 million people and killed more than 3.3 million since the pandemic broke out in December 2019, according to Johns Hopkins University. Over 90 million patients have recovered from the infection.

It takes 1 year to make new vaccine. That's what they do with seasonal flu to make money. They make new flu vaccine every year to make money. People's arms will be destroyed by so many needles.

There isn’t a single variant which has shown the ability to resist the MRNA vaccines for a fully vaccinated individual. The South African variant had the fear and largest drop in lab neutralization. In real life, it’s more than 89 percent effective. Even in the UK which has used primarily Astra Zeneca, the spread of the Indian variant is limited to the younger population who are not vaccinated - so far.

I can’t see the future so can’t comment on the fall, but I agree there will be variants. The question is whether covid with its pretty significant mortality (compared to influenza) can be made in to a normal cold. So even if the vaccine is not efficacious to stop someone getting it, the infection itself is benign. Sounds like in India, they are seeing that in the fully vaccinated healthcare workers that contract it. The only reasonable path is mass vaccination. The other path is to do what the Indians have done to themselves or the Brazilians prior to that with a system so overwhelmed that people that weren’t supposed to die - 20-30 year olds - die in an overwhelmed healthcare system which is unable to give them simple oxygen to survive.

Influenza used to be 10%+ mortality. The milder strains of both influenza and covid will dominate. As long as the host does not die, it will spread to more people. The more viruses out there, the more mutants per year. Simple math. Influenza mortality used to be very high when it hit in 1918. Modern influenza is not as severe. Covid mortality used to be very high when it hit in 2019. Modern covid is not as severe.
