KARACHI: Muttahida Qaumi Movement’s (MQM) Mustafa Kamal, who is credited for changing the face of Karachi during his time as mayor of the megalopolis from 2005-9, and a sitting Senator, has resigned from his seat, Express News reported on Saturday. Though MQM has denied this.

Kamal cited ‘personal obligations’ behind his resignation.

However, an MQM spokesperson said that any reports relating to Kamal’s resignation are baseless and that he is still associated with the party and will continue his duties as a Senator.

The dynamic ex-mayor, who is much loved and admired by many Karachiites for his many developmental initiatives in the metropolis, was shortlisted for the World Mayor Prize in 2010.

Besides the numerous roads and bridges he helped construct, he is also credited with establishing the first of its kind Command and Control Center in Pakistan, a video surveillance facility for Karachi of international standard. It is situated in the main building of City District Government and equipped with the latest surveillance technology.

Before his election as mayor, he served as the IT Minister for the Sindh province from 2003 to 2005.

he grew differences with the old guard, and had gathered enough money to live happily ever after out of Pakistan as Altaf wont take the pain of killing him like he did with Imran Farooq, almost got himself arrested, before mqm reached settlement with UK govt.

mustafa kamal bhai best of luck to your future endeavors, you will be missed

That's the real face of terrorist MQM. A person can't even live in Pakistan if he leaves MQM.

MQM is crumbling,,, all the good people leaving it.

Kamal resigns over 'rift', MQM denies

KARACHI: Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) Senator Mustafa Kamal resigned from his office on Saturday over "rifts" with the party leadership, sources said – although the former city mayor said he had quit the post for "personal reasons".

The MQM, meanwhile, denied news reports regarding resignation of Kamal.

According to sources, the senator had developed "serious differences" with the party leadership and he fled Karachi after being humiliated by party leader as well as workers. Sources added that Kamal had also refused to return to Karachi from London and he was asked by the party to tender his resignation. Kamal has handed over his resignation to the party but it is not being made public at this stage, they said.

Meanwhile, a private TV channel quoted an MQM spokesman as saying that Kamal is still a member of the Senate and that there were no differences between him and the party leadership.

The former Karachi mayor, who is admired for completing several development projects in the city, was shortlisted for the World Mayor Prize in 2010.

Besides constructing numerous roads and bridges in Karachi, he is also credited with establishing the first ever Command and Control Centre in Pakistan, a video surveillance facility for Karachi. Before his election as mayor, he served as IT minister for Sindh from 2003 to 2005.

It is such a disappointment. The people who are the future of MQM are being squeezed out. What then would happen to MQM. Would it stay in the same rut? I had really hoped that once MQM would shake off old baggage and start gaining ground on merit, not old rhetoric. But for now it seems it is more of old rhetoric and not enough of merit.

@darkinsky, would you care to comment on this. I would really like to hear from you. I want someone to tell me that MQM is going to change for the better and that when finally AH leaves (for whatever reason), there would be some few good, honest, & competent people who would keep it together and get rid of old rhetoric. Now it seems like none of the old guard wishes to relinquish their hold on the party. Does AH really know what is going on in MQM? Is he too reliant on a few senior people?
