Pakistan cricket team is going through lowest phase in its history. We are now ranked as number nine in ODI rankings , one rank below Bangladesh. There is a big question mark now on ability of Pakistan for qualifying for 2017 Champions Trophy. If this fast decline isn’t arrested soon then our cricket , like hockey and squash will go into abyss .

Question here arises who is responsible for this decline ? Players ? Coach ? Manager? Or someone else?
After the poor performance in 2015 World Cup , the national chief coach Waqar Younis blamed players for under performing and some players were not included in the tour of Bangladesh on his recommendations. It is a separate story that afterwards we sunk even further by getting beaten so comprehensively by Bangladesh .

In my opinion the culprits are residing at the top of the PCB management and if there is any change it should come from the top.

First person who should be removed is Chairman PCB Shehryar Khan . He is already 80 years old with hardly any cricketing sense . Flaws in his decision making are evident through out his current tenure and also during his previous tenure under which 2006 Oval fiasco took place.
Second person who should be shown the door is Najam Sethi who is known to be defacto Chairman of PCB . One fails to understand why he is so keen to run the affairs of PCB? What knowledge or background of cricket he has? Already his credentials as a journalist as well as controversial tenure as Care taker Chief Minister of Punjab and also his private links with Indian cricket board raises question mark on his sincerity for Pakistan cricket. Problem is that he is in good books of our Prime Minister and is in PCB on PM’s recommendation.

Now I would like to talk about our coaches Waqar Younis and Mushtaq Ahmed . Both may have been wonderful players during their time but one should not forget that they were also named in Malik Qayyum’s match fixing report in the year 2000. Waqar was present as bowling coach during infamous tours of Australia as well as England in the year 2010. In Australia Pakistan lost all the matches under dubious circumstances and in England we had to suffer the humiliation of spot fixing scandal because of which three of our players , Salman Butt , Mohammed Asif and Mohammed Aamir were banned from cricket as well were jailed . It is surprising that Waqar Younis is again coaching our national side. Beside the fact that, in recent past whenever Pakistan has faced a match fixing scandal Waqar has been there as one of the coach of our team , his own egoistic attitude has resulted in resentment in so many players . Who can forget his resistance in playing Sarfraz Ahmed during 2015 World Cup matches who later proved Waqar wrong by his brilliant individual performance.

I am not blaming anyone of dishonesty but if people like Najam Sethi , Waqar Younis , Mushtaq Ahmed and even Moin Khan , remain attached to Pakistan cricket , then I am sure a day will come when we will be in ranks of associates like Holland UAE and Afghanistan.

Now I would like to put down my recommendation which can save Pakistan cricket from complete disaster and bring its lost glory back.

It is most important that PCB should be headed by a person who is honest , strong disciplinarian and has cricket background. At present one such person comes into my mind and that is legendry player of 1960s and 70s , Majid Jahangir Khan . He belongs to a famous cricketing family which has tradition of honesty as well as of serving Pakistan cricket with grace . His past has been clean and devoid of any scandals and he did exceptionally well when he was attached to PCB. PCB need him as Chairman and should be given free hand to clean up the mess created by current and past PCB managements.
If a person like Majid Khan will head the PCB then he will take efforts to revise the system and also appoint appropriate people as coach and manager of our team . Since Majid himself is a strong disciplinarian he will not compromise on discipline in the team and will bring healthy and progressive environment in Pakistan cricket.

We should remember that, to make or break any organization , the role of top leadership is most important . Only those organizations can prosper which have right people to lead. Let’s hope we see positive change in the top leadership of PCB and resulting improvement in Pakistan cricket.
