In the first ever bilateral visit by an Indian Defence Minister to Bangladesh, Manohar Parrikar will visit Dhaka on a two-day visit from Wednesday.

New Delhi is keen to assist Dhaka in domestically building its military infrastructure and capacities, and it would be key part of the discussions, officials said.

Defence sources said this visit was a way to revitalise India’s defence partnership with its immediate neighbours, especially Bangladesh and Myanmar, which share long land boundaries.

Forward policy
“We didn’t really have a defence relationship so far, except some training and military-to-military cooperation which continued at a fairly good level. Under the Sheikh Hasina government, there is a forward looking policy from Bangladesh. With land and maritime disputes behind us, it is logical to deepen defence cooperation,” the sources said on Tuesday.

Mr. Parrikar will meet the top brass of the country during his visit. He will call on Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina who also holds the Defence portfolio, President Abdul Hamid and the security adviser to the Prime Minister.

This is also an attempt by India to offset growing engagement by China and Pakistan with Bangladesh on the defence front.

Naval cooperation
As part of the efforts, India is open to selling them platforms and is keen to extend cooperation in the naval area.

“Bangladesh would like to see growth in their own capacity domestically. We are trying to see if they can work with Indian public and private sector to create manufacturing and infrastructure in Bangladesh,” the sources said. India is also keen on concluding a white shipping agreement to exchange information on commercial traffic and has submitted a draft to Dhaka. “We are waiting for them to come back,” they added.

The other broad focus is intensification of military to military cooperation across all services.

Underscoring its importance, Mr. Parrikar is scheduled to visit the military academy in Chittagong.

The armies of India and Bangladesh have last week concluded the sixth edition of joint military exercise “Sampriti-2016” which focussed on counter-terrorism operations and the sources said Dhaka was keen to deepen the scope of the exercises by adding Special Forces drills among others. Joint exercises in the Naval and Air domains are also on the cards.

We don't need any military help from India . In fact India Myanmar are two country which canbe be a military threat or problem for us . he probably going to offer OPV for navy which i think we can get easily from China so no major defence cooperation is unexpected . India simply trying to wear a bigger shoes then their feet .

This guy is bringing all 2nd in command of 4 services, airforce, navy, army and coast guard. I am not sure if they themselves will start taking training in our military academy.

Can BD leverage this visit into sending some message to Myanmar? So far got huge support from International communities and ASEAN countries. But nothing from the immediate big neighbour India.

are you a pakistani.?

Half Bangladeshi, half Dutch (post war dutch settlers in the UK).....Your point?

India's Defence Minister Parrikar is here on a two day visit after Bangladesh took delivery of submarines from China. He wants to enhance defence relations, particularly with the Navy. He is offering MADE IN INDIA OFFSHORE PATROL VESSEL ON CREDIT PACKAGE TO BANGLADESH NAVY TO ENHANCE BANGLADESH NAVY'S CAPABILITY.

1. How will offering offshore patrol vessels meant for coast guard enhance Bangladesh Navy's capability?

2. They think Bangladesh Navy is short on money for patrol craft so they are offering credit - this means they want our money with interest on Indian made vessels, which will generate employment in India and make Indian government earn money. How does it benefit Bangladesh? Well it does not. Its rather insulting.

3. India is trying to compete with China in a field it cannot. India and Myanmar are the threats against Bangladesh. This will not change if they become our best friends tomorrow as they are our neighbours and anything can occur. China on the other hand is a trusted long term strategic partner (ally) of Bangladesh. They never interfere in Bangladesh's internal affairs and offered Bangladesh over $40 billion in various deals.

Don't you think its time for Parrikar to go back with his "credit package" and offer it to Somalia? Bangladesh's neighbours are very annoying aren't they?

Yeah he offered to build OPVs similar to those Sri Lanka bought. He's basically on a sales mission as he wants to raise india defence exports to $2bn by 2017. Only problem is that were already fully capable of building our own OPVs....

That actually sounds legit. He's probably here to convince us to buy Indian weapons. Tfw your defence minister doing the job of a salesman. Look at his constant smile. Perfect for a salesman convincing customer. Damn that makes me feel a bit sad for him.
