On what basis are we judging the 'worst' political parties?

Performance in governance and development?

Ideally that should be the primary yardstick by which political parties are judged, since that is what they are elected to do.

So lets see, which three political parties have been sent to govern (nationally)?

The PPP, PML-N and PML-Q, the former two not once, but twice each before the last elections (PPP is now on its third stint and the jury is out on how it will fare, but so far the signs are not too good). Both the PPP and PML-N can be argued to have failed miserably at governance and development so far.

Then comes the PML-Q, which governed, along with Musharraf, for about 5 years. Until their last year in office, they did pretty well, with plenty of development projects, high growth rates etc. Of course they did govern under Musharraf, a dictator, so it is hard to say whether their performance would have been the same had they governed alone.

Beyond those three national level parties we have the major regional parties - MQM, ANP, and the 'Mazhabi anti-Fahashi gang' aka 'MMA'.

Of the three the MQM, based on its performance in Karachi, easily wins on the basis of development and governance, with development schemes across the board, most finished on time, new City Ownership projects started, new security initiatives started (CC TV City monitoring etc.) And a largely peaceful tenure.

The ANP is, like the PPP's third term, without a scorecard as of yet given that they have not finished their term in office, but again, aside from their strong stance against terrorism, there does not appear to be (based on media reports) much to their governance and development initiatives.

So last comes our Mazhabi anti-fahashi brigade (aka MMA aka all the religious parties that were part of it), well, they had their chance, like the MQM, to govern with Musharraf for 5 years in NWFP, and they blew it. Instead of development and governance they were focused on tearing down billboards with women on them and banning music and dancing. Instead of focusing on maintaining law and order, the Taliban and other associated militias and gangs had free reign of the NWFP under their government. They proved themselves utterly unworthy of the reputation they had accumulated of being 'Pakistan's most disciplined party' (JI, since they were the largest component of the MMA).

So based on performance in power at least, the MQM is the least of all evils, and the best political party in Pakistan currently.

As for the TI, one cannot really judge a party that is so incompetent that it cannot win a single seat in parliament a decade after it was formed.

I tend to agree with AgnoMus's posts but not this time. I mean, yes, give credit to MQM when due. But why should we be surprised by the progress in Karachi when the most highly educated, the most prosperous city in Pakistan is given complete backing of the federal and provincial govts. for 5 years when that city manages to achieve something? Yes, Mustafa Kamal is a very dedicated mayor. Yes, he acheived a lot. But also he achieved what he achieved in a very favorable environment and a large of that was under the relative peace in Pakistan pre-2007.
That does not take away from Kamal's (and by extension MQM's) achievement) but the achievements need to be looked under a larger microscope. In this vein I'd like to point out that even the Jamaati mayor Naimat ullah in pre-Kamal era is credited for much (though I hate Jamaat i Islami).
As to other parties' 'stints' in power, since 1977, the PPP has never ruled the majority of Pakistan and when it did rule it was hunted down by the Pakistani 'establishment'. In 1988 the establishment propped up Nawaz Sharif so much that a certain PPP federal minister had to use helicopters to get to Islamabad because the PML govt. of Nawaz Sharif was going to arrest and perhaps torture that minister. So much so for 'power'!
Sure, I am not going to white-wash the mistakes of BB but what she was up against was the real powers of Pakistan. She was never even allowed to peek inside the real places like the Kahuta Research Labs barely a few miles from the PM House. One can write several PhD dissertations about the way the PPP was cut down from the most popular political force in Pakistan in 1979 (PPP won the municipal elections) to a force which could not win even a simple majority in 1988--all within a span of less than a decade and all thanks to the powers of the Pakistani establishment.
PS. More power to MQM if it gives up its fascist ways. I cannot erase from my mind the news report of MQM men justifying ransacking the Jang news offices in the late 80s because the wedding ceremony of Farooq Sattar was not given prominence.
By the way, before you jump to any conclusions here is a disclaimer: I too am an Urdu speaker from Karachi who once proudly supported the MQM. I don't hate it per se, knowing the intolerance traits run in all major players inside Pakistan.

The politicians in Pakistan are not even worth to be employed as bell boys in a hotel let alone giving the keys of the country to them.

When we will have an election system where no one is head of a political party instead the head of a political party is elected by the public and is "educated".

An example of UAE which was formed in 1971. In 70s there were only handful of locals who had higher university degrees.

But now see them, no member of the Federal National Council is below Masters level and their local population is only 1 million.

Pakistan was created in 1947 and now we have a population of 170 million+ and we still do not have enough highly learned and capable people except these same corrupt to the bones dirty faces sitting every time in the parliament who can be given the keys of the country?

Why is Pakistani Army not a choice on the list? Afterall they have ruled Pakistan for over 70% of its existence. Just a thought.
