CHANDERKOTE (DODA): She is afraid to talk. And when she does, it's in suppressed whispers _ of 25 days of torture at the hands of militants who raped her repeatedly and chopped her ears and nose before she was rescued by the police.

Barely into her teens, Mariam Begum, is a ghost of her former self. Three days after the police brought her home in this village of Doda, she cannot stand on her feet. Her legs bear marks of brutal thrashing, her breasts branded with hot iron rods. Her hair is closely cropped, visible only between the bandage wrapped tightly across her nose and ears.

Mariam has been ``punished''for her brother Abdul Latif's decision to quit the Harkat-ul-Mujahideen and surrender to the security forces, says her uncle. Frustrated with the militant outfit, Latif had surrendered on June 7. On June 16, militants stormed the Mehad Dhar where Mariam and her father, Mohammad Ibrahim, were taking a nap.

The militants took them to their hideout and over 25 days, tortured them for failing to stop Latif from surrendering. ``Everytime they hit me, they said, `You know the pika gun your brother handed over to security forces costs more than Rs 26 lakh. Unless you get that back we will continue inflicting wounds on you','' Mariam recalls.

A day before the police found her, one of the militants ran the tip of a knife from her neck to her stomach. ``Then, he suddenly he started cropping my hair with the knife. I was yet to recover from the pain they inflicted by chopping off my nose and ears,'' says Mariam.

Policemen found Mariam in Gandoh forest three days ago, beaten up and bleeding from her nose and ears. Her muffled sobs reached them when they were patrolling but the militants, Noor Mohammad alias Ansari, Bashir Ahmad and Dilawar, managed to flee. Her father returned a few days ago.

A month ago, Mariam's uncle worried if anybody would marry a militant's sister. Now, he can't stop crying on seeing her. ``With disfigured face, will Mariam ever get a match for herself?'' he says. Deputy Inspector General Satvir Gupta promises help for Mariam's treatment. ``For specialised treatment, we have decided to shift Mariam to Government Medical College (GMC) Hospital, Jammu,'' says Gupta. Mariam's uncle points out it is ironical it is the police they seek now.

Only months ago, the sight of khaki-clad personnel would send shivers down their spine as they dreaded being picked up to reveal Latif's whereabouts.

SRINAGAR: In occupied Kashmir, the authorities placed the Chairman of All Parties Hurriyet Conference, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, senior Kashmiri Hurriyet leader, Syed Ali Gilani and other Hurriyet leaders, Agha Syed Hassan Al-Moosvi, Fazl Haq Qureshi and Mian Abdul Qayoom under house arrest on Friday, to prevent them from leading the anti-polls demonstrations.

The occupation authorities have imposed undeclared curfew in Srinagar and Badgam towns while the adjacent areas of Jamia Masjid in Srinagar have been sealed.

Meanwhile, Indian troopers of Rashtriya Rifles barged into a house and gang-raped a 13-year-old girl at Dandipora in Islamabad district. Thousands of people took to streets against the inhuman incident and raised anti-India and pro-liberation slogans.

UN vote is totally dead because of Pakistan's obstructionism and subsequent sponsorship of terrorism.

As for so called Jihadi "freedom fighters", the locals detest them, as the first post on this thread correctly points out.

As stated by ex-ISI chief Lt. Gen. (retd) Qazi in the Pakistani Parliament, one single Pakistani freedom fighter organization Jaish-e-Muhammad has slaughtered thousands of innocent Kashmiris (see Jaish behind Parliament attack: ex-ISI chief ).

If one single freedom organization Jaish can slaughter thousands of locals, just imagine how many Kashmiris all the freedom fighters have slaughtered overall. It's not just the Jaish, but there are also organizations like Harkat, Hibz, Lashkar-e-Toiba, and many more.

In fact it is likely that most of the casualties in Kashmir fall in two categories - either they are innocent Kashmiris being slaughtered by Pakistani freedom fighters, or they are Pakistani freedom fighters going to Jannat after being slaughtered by Indian Army.

The freedom fighters have been treating Kashmiris with unlimited brutality - not only slaughtering them but also raping local women, cutting off noses and ears of young girls, etc.

So more kashmirs have been killed by freedom fighters then the indian army...?

SRINAGAR, India (Reuters) - Suspected Muslim guerrillas sliced off the nose, ears and tongue of a 14-year-old girl in Indian Kashmir on Sunday, believing her to be an informer for the Indian army, police said. Mariam Begum was abducted by a group of militants from her house in Doda district south of Srinagar, Kashmir's summer capital.

"The abductee was let off by the terrorists. However her ears, nose and tongue have been chopped off," a police spokesman said.

Rebels have in the past killed or maimed people who they believe are helping Indian soldiers put down the 15-year revolt in the Himalayan region.

So it is suspected that it was the freedom fighters but no proof and the reason given in one post is that her brother quit the freedom fighters and that why she was tortured but this post says she was a informer.....how was she able to talk to reporters when her tongue was chopped off?

I don't think Indian army kills people to create fear and retain people with them, unlike terrorists, the IA is more civlised than that. Indian army lets peaceful protests in the valley but never violence, but yes during the election days, they enact curfews so that the separatists doesn't disrupt the elections being conducted peacefully..!!! There is a hell lot of differences between Indian army and a terrorist using guns and fear as a tool to create insecurity in the mind of the local population. Aritrocacies like the above, chopping heads/noses/ears and stuff are done by the terrorists. However some bad apples in the army too have been accused of rape and killings(during cross fire or misunderstanding) but i dont think never indian army have used GUNS against Peaceful protesters..!!!!

FIrstly India's position on Kashmir is strong and out of immediate danger. Essentially the reason why India need not care about dialogue with Pakistan, except for convincing certain people that efforts are in place for talks.

As time progresses if Kashmir perceives development then India's position with get even more strong. So all India has to do is focus on development and democracy in Kashmir.

Pakistan has lost reputation because of the support for terrorism. But it can still win over Kashmir with good moves.

If Pakistan were confident of a referendum on Kashmir, what they could do is try to make world believe that terrorism in Kashmir has stopped.

Ironically, if they are that confident, the killer move would be to give up *** and ask India to hold a plebiscite(THEN technically India's violation of UNSC will kick in really putting its reputation on the line before the whole world). But we all know that ain't gonna happen. But IF that happens, India may loose depending upon the ground situation. In this respect, the more delay takes place, the more Pakistan loses.

Nothing to do with loopholes just that going off past experince stories as shocking as the one you have mentioned turn out to be half truths that are twisted into something else......no doubt certain freedom fighters carried out crimes against innocent people but its no different to what the indian army does all the time,except when you commit a crime its always "a few bad apples" that commit the crime......well use the same logic on the freedom fighters "its a just a few bad apples".

New York Times report dated November 10, 1947, just after the Pakistani freedom fighters fled from Baramulla:

The city has been stripped of its wealth and young women before the tribesmen fled in terror, at midnight Friday, before the advancing Indian Army. Surviving residents estimate that 3,000 of their fellow townsmen, including four Europeans and a retired British Army officer, known only as Colonel Dykes, and his pregnant wife were slain. Murder, rape, arson and loot and the brutal murder of a local National Conference worker, who had rallied local sentiment against the invaders, provided further evidence that they had not come to liberate their fellow-Muslims.

The invaders, who decades later were still disturbing her dreams, had been encouraged to enter Kashmir by elements in the Pakistan establishment to claim the Muslim-majority, Hindu-ruled princely state for Islam and Pakistan.I urgently sought out others who had lived through the attack. In England, Tom Dykes told me how he was awoken on that Monday morning by the sound of gunfire. He was five years old. He and some nuns sought refuge in a locked room at the convent hospital, but the attackers started to batter down the door. "The splinters started to fly, and I could see the wild faces through the cracks. At the back of the room there was another door, and it was not locked and I ran." His parents were among the six people killed in the attack; he and his two younger brothers survived.

Chanapora - 7-3-90 CRPF personnel raided the house in the locality-one woman aged 24 years was taken out of the kitchen and raped by 20 CRPF personnels. Another woman was also raped . Two minor girls of the age of 14 and 16 were molested.

Badasgam Village - During the intervening night of 17/18th May,1990, bus #1317 carrying 27 persons holding valid permission from BSF, of a marriage party, was stopped near Badasgam village, district Islamabad crossing about 23.30 hours by BSF patrolling party . The BSF personnel opened indiscriminate firing upon the bus. M. Abdullah S/O Gani Malik R/O Lisser died instantaneously. Bridegroom and eight other persons accompanying him received injuries. Bride and her chamber-maid were gang raped by the BSF personnel . The bride was taken away by them leaving behind chamber-maid and subsequently released after 48 hours . The bus was removed to district Police lines; it had seventy-eight bullet-hole marks. A case was duly registered in the concerned Police station and an inquiry was conducted by the then DIG Kashmir and a medical report also obtained duly proved the lady was raped. However despite the assurances given by the Government from time to time for taking necessary action against the culprits, Government authorities have failed to bring the culprits on record. The normal trend of the Government during these years is to hide the atrocities committed by the Indian armed and paramilitary forces in order to dodge the Amenesty International and the world Human Rights Organizations. This normal trend of dodging is still continuing.

PANZGAM DISTRICT PULWAMA - One woman during serch operations at Panzgam was raped on 9.6.1990 at 7P.M by the Army personal. Males were tied to a tree and a 18 year-old unmarried girl was gang-raped by the forces.

One woman who had delivered a baby only 30 days earlier was gang-raped by the Army and Paramilitary Forces.

A lady was raped by the armed forces of 268 Bn. In this episode 48 personal were involved including an officer.

On 14-6-90, 68th Mountain Brigade while combing operations at Threggam, Haigam and Dalipora, molested young ladies and a daughter of one person was subjected to rape. Her body was found full of bruises, flesh of left cheek had been carved-out and the woman folk was compelled to be nude.

On 17-6-90, 68Bn Mountain Brigade during crack-down, raped one lady and the act was carried out by six Army Personnel in her own house. The poor girl tried to commit suicide after the brutal attack and has lost her mental balance.

On the same date i.e 17-6-90, young ladies were molested and the daughter of one inhabitant in order to save her chastity jumped from the 2nd story; both her legs were fractured and had to be given a plaster cast.

On 22-6-90, at Panzipora, one young girl was forcibly made nude, assaulted and compelled to make a nude parade in the village. During this process, Army Personal were scratching flesh from her nude body.

On 17-6-90, scores of women were molested by the Army Personal. Markes of tooth bites were visible on the cheeks of the women. Their clothes were torn and forced into nude.

On 17-6-90, B.S.F. personnel entered into houses, compelled males to come out of their houses and forcibly raped two ladies at their residence. Again on the same date, at Machter, Chokibal, a couple was arrested and taken to Army camp. Husband was tied and his wife was subjected to rape by six Army personnel. Again on the same date, wife of one person was raped in presence of her husband. Again on the same date, one woman was compelled to take off her cloths in presence of her father. The poor girl was subjected to rape by a number of Army personnel and was left unconscious in a nude condition. Father of the girl was beaten severely and his arm was fractured.

On 19-5-90 at Ladervan, one young girl was hanged up side down for four hours on a tree. She was given electric shocks due to which she became unconscious.On recovery, again she was beaten severely. The body of the girl was full of bruises and has lost her mental balance. On the same date, one woman mother of four kids was physically tortured and molested . She was hanged upside down on a tree and then locked in a room where she was given electric shocks and later she was left, believing her dead. Again on the same date, a woman was physically tortured. Cigarette burns were visible on her body and was also subjected to electric shocks.

LAL-BAZAR,SRINAGAR - Three unmarried daughters of one respectable family were picked-up by the Indian Armed Forces to Cantonment Area, Srinagar. They were released after two nights, after being subjected to sexual assault. They were released after lot of persuasion by the Director General of Police J&K.

ISLAMIA COLLEGE, SRINAGAR - One girl, while she was walking during the period of curfew relaxation was forcibly taken into college premises by the Paramilitary forces and released after two nights during which period she was subjected to sexual assault. It should be pointed out that the College was being used as a picket and an interrogation center by the forces.

WADVAN DISTRICT BADGAM - In this District 14 women were gang-raped by the Army and other Paramilitary forces on the intervening night of 25/26June,1990. One of them died at S.M.H.S Hospital, Srinagar(Emergency Ward) on 11-7-90.

HANDWARA DISTRICT KUPWARA - 12-7-90, B.S.F Personal cordoned off four villages Chogal for search. This also included the village Saghipora. They ordered all inhabitants to come out of their houses except females between 16 to 22 years age group. They then entered their houses and raped 12 girls.

In the month of August,1990, one Chowkidar along with his daughter was going to village Chokibal, Kupwara District; six army personnels tied the father of the lady against a tree and raped her.

In village Lushhat, Kupwara, which is close to the line of actual control, a sixteen year old girl and her mother were raped by the forces in the month of August,1990. The District authorities went to the spot immediately after the incident and recorded the statement of witnesses and made the inspection The officers reported the matter to the Divisional Commissioner Srinagar for taking necessary action under law against the culprits involved in the rape incident. The government transferred the officer to some other place, in order to punish him for reporting the matter for action.

The normal trend of the Government during these years is to hide the atrocities committed by the Indian armed and paramilitary forces in order to dodge the Amenesty International and the world Human Rights Organizations. This normal trend of dodging is still continuing.

PANZGAM DISTRICT PULWAMA - One woman during serch operations at Panzgam was raped on 9.6.1990 at 7P.M by the Army personal. Males were tied to a tree and a 18 year-old unmarried girl was gang-raped by the forces.

One woman who had delivered a baby only 30 days earlier was gang-raped by the Army and Paramilitary Forces.

A lady was raped by the armed forces of 268 Bn. In this episode 48 personal were involved including an officer.

On 14-6-90, 68th Mountain Brigade while combing operations at Threggam, Haigam and Dalipora, molested young ladies and a daughter of one person was subjected to rape. Her body was found full of bruises, flesh of left cheek had been carved-out and the woman folk was compelled to be nude.

On 17-6-90, 68Bn Mountain Brigade during crack-down, raped one lady and the act was carried out by six Army Personnel in her own house. The poor girl tried to commit suicide after the brutal attack and has lost her mental balance.

On the same date i.e 17-6-90, young ladies were molested and the daughter of one inhabitant in order to save her chastity jumped from the 2nd story; both her legs were fractured and had to be given a plaster cast.

On 22-6-90, at Panzipora, one young girl was forcibly made nude, assaulted and compelled to make a nude parade in the village. During this process, Army Personal were scratching flesh from her nude body.

On 17-6-90, scores of women were molested by the Army Personal. Markes of tooth bites were visible on the cheeks of the women. Their clothes were torn and forced into nude.

On 17-6-90, B.S.F. personnel entered into houses, compelled males to come out of their houses and forcibly raped two ladies at their residence. Again on the same date, at Machter, Chokibal, a couple was arrested and taken to Army camp. Husband was tied and his wife was subjected to rape by six Army personnel. Again on the same date, wife of one person was raped in presence of her husband. Again on the same date, one woman was compelled to take off her cloths in presence of her father. The poor girl was subjected to rape by a number of Army personnel and was left unconscious in a nude condition. Father of the girl was beaten severely and his arm was fractured.

On 19-5-90 at Ladervan, one young girl was hanged up side down for four hours on a tree. She was given electric shocks due to which she became unconscious.On recovery, again she was beaten severely. The body of the girl was full of bruises and has lost her mental balance. On the same date, one woman mother of four kids was physically tortured and molested . She was hanged upside down on a tree and then locked in a room where she was given electric shocks and later she was left, believing her dead. Again on the same date, a woman was physically tortured. Cigarette burns were visible on her body and was also subjected to electric shocks.

LAL-BAZAR,SRINAGAR - Three unmarried daughters of one respectable family were picked-up by the Indian Armed Forces to Cantonment Area, Srinagar. They were released after two nights, after being subjected to sexual assault. They were released after lot of persuasion by the Director General of Police J&K.

ISLAMIA COLLEGE, SRINAGAR - One girl, while she was walking during the period of curfew relaxation was forcibly taken into college premises by the Paramilitary forces and released after two nights during which period she was subjected to sexual assault. It should be pointed out that the College was being used as a picket and an interrogation center by the forces.

WADVAN DISTRICT BADGAM - In this District 14 women were gang-raped by the Army and other Paramilitary forces on the intervening night of 25/26June,1990. One of them died at S.M.H.S Hospital, Srinagar(Emergency Ward) on 11-7-90.

HANDWARA DISTRICT KUPWARA - 12-7-90, B.S.F Personal cordoned off four villages Chogal for search. This also included the village Saghipora. They ordered all inhabitants to come out of their houses except females between 16 to 22 years age group. They then entered their houses and raped 12 girls.

In the month of August,1990, one Chowkidar along with his daughter was going to village Chokibal, Kupwara District; six army personnels tied the father of the lady against a tree and raped her.

In village Lushhat, Kupwara, which is close to the line of actual control, a sixteen year old girl and her mother were raped by the forces in the month of August,1990. The District authorities went to the spot immediately after the incident and recorded the statement of witnesses and made the inspection The officers reported the matter to the Divisional Commissioner Srinagar for taking necessary action under law against the culprits involved in the rape incident. The government transferred the officer to some other place, in order to punish him for reporting the matter for action.

So it would be nice to get to know your source..!!!! Because as far as i read the above.. it seems the handy work of terrorists.. to cast bad name on the Army..!!!
