Pakistani sufi band to perform in Delhi

With an upcoming music album titled Aandolan, it might appear that Pakistan-based sufi group Mekaal Hasan is inspired by the recent series of public uprisings in the Middle-East and India. However, the rock band maintains a purely apolitical stance.

"None of our work has political overtones. What we make is pure music. The album is named Aandolan because of the way we composed the songs in it, every tune in this album is sliding from one to another", says Mekaal Hasan, lead composer of the Mekaal Hasan Band (MHB).

The rock music group which held a concert in Kolkata is scheduled to perform in the national capital on January 11 at FICCI auditorium at a Rock and Jazz concert organized by a Indian Council for Cultural relations and NGO Routes2Roots.

"We love performing in India. Indian audience always gives us a warm welcome", says Javed Bahsir, MHB member and a classical singer famous in Pakistan.

With previous album releases like"Sampooran" (2004) and "Saptak" (2009) the group believes their music a fusion of jazz, classical and sufi rock represents the culture of the subcontinent.

"Our music is inspired by Indian classical music. A lot of Pakistani artists knowingly or unknowingly base their music on Indian Classical music", says Hasan, the band's founder, composer, record producer, sound engineer and lead guitarist.

"The purpose of our band is to present culture of our subcontinent. Our albums have songs by poets like Amrita Pritam, Amir Khusrao, Faiz and Bulleh Shah, who transcended borders and belong to everyone", says Hasan.

Our music competes with Indian films and is of better quality. Their film industry was of better quality in the 70's, but as of now is just recycled garbage for the masses.

bro india has produced some of the greatest musicians ever in AR Rahman,Illayaraja,MS Viswanathan.........this is what they had to say about illayaraja What they say about Ilayaraja.

i bet u havent listened to any of their music..........dont just speak having listened only to bollywood music(which is also good most of the times) there is still telugu, tamil, malayalam, kannada where music literature has produced some mid blowing works...........

"I have understood music across several parts of the world. Have sung in several languages. With that experience, I can say confidently that there is no match to Indian Classical music. And in that form of music, Illayaraja has explored and mastered."-Balamurali Krishna.

If Pakistani band performs in India, does this mean Pakistanis feel more at ease with India than other countries like Syria, Algeria, Morocco or Lebanon? According to "desertfox", it does not prove "jacksh!t" and after using self-contradictory "arguments" and utterly hilarious claims (such as "Microsoft develops..CPUs in "Israel""), he may want to exonerate himself.

North Indians understand our language, Syria and other Middle Eastern countries don't.

This is all for money, Pakistanis don't want special bond with Indians. Pakistani musicians want to be rich.

I can agree with you, but Indian classical music has died. Dispute me with an artist of this day and age.

It's well and alive, but catering a niche audience. The problem is pakistanis can't go beyond Bollywood.

taal was the best indiam musical movie ever...
have they made anything better in recent years?

this is just an illusion for the outside world,,,,,,,though am aware of the touch with the names. u turn on the TV in india u can listen to loads and loads of classical music and reality shows,concerts...they show some of the brightest young talent in the country.......in india every musician even a rock musician learns basic indian classic music, but these days it is difficult to find pure classics as amalgam of classic and western are absorbed well by people..........and i also have immence respect for pakistani musicians and sufi music(i sometimes wonder how such basic simple instruments produce such heavenly music).

I rather have you Indians promote songs that could touch my soul rather than make money.

The whole ''Bimaree'' lies here; when people start comparing and your are a serial comparer. Grow Up.

I'm sorry for being a human being having an opinion man. :frown:

Please do the world a favour then, and project your quality rather than your crap.

If craps sell better than let it be. I myself usually avoid most Bollywood movies, there are however good movies being produced by Bollywood as well.
