Pakistani president urges nation to go green


ISLAMABAD, Jan. 30 (Xinhua) -- Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari Friday launched the spring tree plantation campaign and urged the nation's people to make Pakistan green by enthusiastically participating in the national cause.

Zardari kicked off the campaign to plant more than 70 million saplings across Pakistan by planting a sapling at the presidential house here in Islamabad.

He said that it was the Pakistani people's national and religious duty to grow more trees and protect existing forests and trees.

Trees and forests hold the key to a healthier environment and ecological balance, he said, adding that forests were an essential part of the ecosystem regulating water supplies and in the year 2009 that had been designated as the environment year.

Zardari said that the government planned to increase forest cover to six percent of Pakistan by 2015, launching tree plantation twice a year and targeted to plant 70 million trees this year.

These are laudable goals, he said, adding that all stakeholders including farmers, local communities, forest owners and right holders, civil society organizations, the private sector and students should be involved in it.

and we have quite beautiful natural sites
we should preserve them as well
like label them as parks or something
i actually like the idea that each province should at least be 40% natural [no concrete etc]
cities usually causes many diseases and harmful things among people and the only way to prevent that is to go green [heyy thats where we get all our medicines and krap right lol]

Islamabad is a fairly new city compared to Lahore, Karachi etc. Not only that, It's carved out of slopes and hills so the natural beauty still prevails there. Lahore IS quite green but it's overshadowed by the huge amounts of motor vehicles and pollution. Take a walk or drive anywhere in lahore after a heavy Rainfall. You'd know how green our beautiful city is

Yes Lahore is relatively more greener than some other cities. Some parts of Peshawar are also very green. Pakistan needs to work on Karachi and Quetta. I guess because Sindh and Balochistan are mostly desert areas they are not as green as Punjab, NWFP, and Northern Areas.

I think its a great idea by President Zardari to plant trees and try to make our nation more green like our beautiful national flag

Everyone whose well off should contribute to this noble cause.

Hmm..sometimes I wonder, other nations who were developing decades ago didn't have this "message" or didn't have to "go green", they could all focus on economic development regardless of the ecologic consequenses or whatever.
Now Pakistan has to both sustain a good economic growth + a greener country.
I hope we succeed at balancing both, God Bless Pakistan.

OMG didn't you get it. Let me explain it. Firstly i believe in green nature and i am in the favor of green. Zardari said 70 million trees by this year and what do you think it will be free? answer is NO. This is another way of making money by opening a new way to make 20%!!! hahaha its sad that this is his another scheme to rob Pakistan......
