That would have been a bad answer.
When it comes to international affairs, you promise that you can deliver. Pakistan cannot force Iran to the negotiating table. Even giving such an impression will invite ridicule and unleash a torrent of criticism in Pakistan which will be picked up by India and reinterpreted for a few more news cycles. On top of that Trump is known to watch Fox News so he must have been listening to IK's interview. IK did the diplomatic thing and simply avoided the question altogether and pivoted away which is a much better strategy. This isn't IK's first interview in the international media. He has spent his entire life speaking to the media.
Ok but he goes on to make a similar promise saying Pakistan might be able to help protect ships if asked. Also there is nothing wrong with saying you offered to bring someone to the negotiating table, didn't Trump just do that with India? You think India will come to the table? Russia did that during Feb 27 as well did India show up?
Since you know Trump is watching he would want to hear things that suit his narrative which happens to be the truth, that Iran does want nukes. This is also not the first time he was tripped up by an international reporter watch the financial times interview where the interviewer asks him about Xinjiang and he only says "I wouldn't know too much about that".
