LANDI KOTAL, June 4: Twelve militants were killed in aerial shelling and a clash between rival groups in Tirah valley of Khyber Agency on Monday.

Security officials said that fighter planes targeted hideouts of Taliban affiliated with Tariq Afridi group in Dwa Thoe area in the morning that resulted in killing of 10 militants. The hideouts of Taliban were also destroyed in the bombardment, they added.

Taliban are also facing stiff resistance from Kukikhel tribal lashkar in the same area. A Kukikhel jirga had earlier resolved to expel Taliban from their area and punish those, who were providing shelter to militants of any armed group.

Also, two militants affiliated with Lashkar-i-Islam were killed and three volunteers of Zakhakhel Peace Committee sustained
injuries in a clash in Bukarrh area of Bazaar-Zakhakhel on Monday.

In Akkakhel area of Bara tehsil, three local commanders of banned outfit Lashkar-i-Islam surrendered to Akkakhel Peace Committee.

The committee had given an ultimatum on Sunday to all militants in Akkakhel area to lay down arms and surrender before June 10.

The peace body has warned of imposing a huge fine and demolishing the house of those, who refuse to surrender or provide shelter to militants.

9 militants, 2 volunteers killed in Tirah clashes

LANDI KOTAL: A local Taliban commander, eight other militants and two volunteers were killed on Wednesday as heavy clashes between the two groups continued in Tirah valley of Khyber tribal region.

The Kukikhel tribe claimed to have killed nine Taliban and captured four others, but their claim could not be verified from independent sources.

Two volunteers of Akkakhel peace committee were shot dead by Lashkar-i-Islam men in the Abdullah Kor area.

It is learnt that Taliban commander Nazir Afridi was among the dead.

He was a nephew of Mangal Bagh and brother-in-law of Taliban commander Tariq Afridi.

Officials in Bara said Nazir Afridi was involved in a number of subversive activities, including attacks on military convoys and destruction of government buildings, but they did not confirm his killing.

Clash in Chagai kills 15

QUETTA: At least 12 alleged criminals and three tribesmen were killed on Friday in a gun-battle between Levies Force and armed men in Chagai district, an area in Balochistan which shares border with Iran and Afghanistan.

“The exchange of fire lasted about 16 hours resulting in deaths of 15 people, including 12 criminals,” Deputy Commissioner Tufail Baloch said.

According to Levies Force officials, a group of armed men after killing a son of a local tribesman in Chagai on Thursday, fled to mountains in the Zardgan area of Chagai district and took position.

Levies Force personnel followed the attackers and surrounded the area where they had taken positions. The attackers opened indiscriminate fire at the Levies Force with sophisticated weapons. Around 12 accused were killed when Levies Force personnel retaliated with full force while three tribesmen who were assisting the Levies Force were also killed in the battle.

The deputy commissioner confirmed the incident and said that “12 most wanted criminals,” who were involved in different crimes including the murder of the local tribesman’s son, were killed during the fighting with the Levies Force. “Levies personnel also recovered weapons and vehicles from the criminals,” he added.

Sources said that the exchange of fire between the accused persons and Levies Force lasted for about 16 hours while heavy weapons were used in the incident. “The operation has ended and the situation is now completely under control,” DC Chagai added.

Sources added that the accused killed during the operation belonged to Panjgour, Chagai and Nushki districts, while two of their accomplices were also killed the other day.

The bodies were taken to a state-run hospital for an autopsy.

At least 15 militants killed in Dir, Orakzai

ORAKZAI: At least six militants were killed by Pakistani forces, in an act of retaliation, at the Pak-Afghan border on Thursday, DawnNews reported.

Pakistani forces opened their fire after they were attacked by the militants from the other side of the border.

The incident took place in the mountain region of upper Dir area.

Meanwhile in Orakzai agency’s Mamuzai area, jet-bombing of the Pakistani forces killed at least nine militants and their hideouts were also demolished.

According to the sub-collector Hameed Khan, “Jet-bombing of the Pakistani security forces on suspected militant hideouts, at least nine militants were killed and six hideouts were destroyed in Mamuzai area of Orakzai.”

“Ninety two percent of Orakzai area is not under the control of the militants, ” security sources said.

13 militants killed in Khyber Agency copter attacks

LANDI KOTAL, June 20: Thirteen militants were killed and several others injured when helicopter gunships bombed Taliban positions in Tirah valley of Khyber Agency on Wednesday.

According to security sources, the helicopters destroyed five Taliban hideouts in Dwa Thoe and a local militant ‘commander’ was among those killed.

The sorties were the first after Taliban took control of most parts of the Kukikhel-inhabited areas of Tirah.

Independent sources, however, did not confirm the claim about the number of militants killed. Meanwhile, more Kukikhel families moved out
of Toor Darra after Taliban of Tariq Afridi group took control of the area.

The families crossed over to Afghanistan and reached Jamrud through the Torkham border after walking for three days from Tirah via Nangarhar province of Afghanistan.

All the routes to Jamrud from Tirah are either under the control of Taliban or activists of the Lashkar-i-Islam.

In Bazaar Zakhakhel, an activist of the Tawheedul Islam group was critically injured when explosives stored in the home of his commander Mehmud went off.

11 militants and an Army officer killed in South Waziristan

SOUTH WAZIRISTAN: During a search operation against Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) militants in Ladah Tehsil of South Waziristan agency, a security convoy was targeted by the militants, which left one soldier dead and seven injured.

The security forces targeted the miscreants with jets and helicopters killing 11 militants and injured scores of others.

Inter Service public Relations (ISPR) confirmed the death of an officer, while six have been injured it says.

17 militants surrender in Bajaur Agency

In Bajaur Agency, 17 militants including some senior ‘commanders’ surrendered to SFs in Charmang area of Nawagai tehsil (revenue unit). The surrendered militants took oath on the holey Quran that they would live as peaceful citizens in the future. “We will never participate in any anti-state activity. We will not be part of any militant group working against the country,” they pledged. The surrendered militants told journalists that that they were misguided by their commanders. “They (commanders) had told us that activities against the security forces and locals were a part of jihad,” they added. They said that they were attached with militant groups for the last four years. They said that they had taken part in several activities against the forces as well as tribal elders.

DIR: As many as 15 terrorists and one security official were killed when terrorists attacked a security checkpost from Afghanistan in the Barawal area of Upper Dir on Friday. According to security sources, several terrorists attacked the Karakar checkpost near the Afghan border, killing one security official and injuring another two. The forces repulsed the attack in a befitting manner, killing 15 terrorists. inp

KALAYA/MIRAMSHAH, June 26: The security forces claimed to have killed eight militants including three commanders and secured strategically important positions in Mamozai area of Orakzai Agency on Tuesday.

Official sources said that security forces also destroyed two hideouts of militants in Botakhel area of the tribal region. They said that forces launched an operation in the area, which was considered a stronghold of militants in the troubled Orakzai Agency.

Security forces backed by artillery launched offensive to flush out militants from the area, the sources said. An official said that militants vacated their positions after heavy shelling.

He said that eight militants were killed and their two hideouts were destroyed in the artillery shelling. He said that three commanders were also among the dead. The killed militant commanders were identified as Wahid Ilyas, Ihsanullah and Mohammad Din.

Also, warplanes targeted suspected positions in the area adjacent to Khyber Agency. However, no loss of life was reported from the area.

In North Waziristan Agency, four persons including two children were injured when mortar shell hit a residential compound in Spelga village on Monday night.

Earlier militants fired two rockets at the base of paramilitary forces in Miramshah. However, the rockets missed the target.

Security forces retaliated with heavy artillery and mortar firing.

The residents of the area said that a shell landed in a house in Spelga Village and injured two children, a woman and a man. The injured were shifted to the agency headquarters hospital in Miramshah.

In Peshawar, a militant commander was killed during an encounter in Mashogagar area on the outskirts of Peshawar on Tuesday, police said.

An official said that a police party was sent to the area when they got information about presence of four militants there. The militants tried to escape in a motorcar when the law enforcers approached the area, he added.

The official said that upon seeing the police party, the militants left the motorcar and opened firing on law enforcers with automatic weapons.

During the encounter, he said, one militant was killed while his three accomplices managed to escape. The killed militant was identified as Umer, a commander of Taliban in Khyber Agency, he added.

The official said that nobody had approached police to receive the body of the killed militant commander. He said that one hand grenade, one pistol and many cartridges were recovered from the possession of the militant.

Meanwhile, police claimed to have recovered an abducted girl from Badhber and arrested a man involved in her kidnapping.

A police spokesman said that on the complaint of Mumtaz, a resident of Sar Dheri in Charsadda, police raided a house in Badhber and recovered a girl, who was abducted by Shahid.

He said that the girl was kept in chains inside a room. A case against the accused was already registered at Sar Dheri police station, he added.

PESHAWAR: Pakistan said Monday that seven soldiers were beheaded by militants who infiltrated from Afghanistan, lashing out at Kabul over cross-border attacks.
The protests come with Pakistan under growing US pressure to act against al Qaeda-linked safe havens on its own soil and the anti-terror Islamabad-Washington alliance at its lowest ebb since the 9/11 attacks.
Pakistan already reported that six soldiers were killed in gunbattles with militants Sunday who crossed from Afghanistan into the northwestern district of Upper Dir, a key border transit route that neighbours the Swat valley where Pakistan defeated a local Taliban insurgency in 2009.
Intelligence officials blamed the attack on loyalists of Pakistani cleric Maulana Fazlullah, who fled to Afghanistan after losing control of Swat to the army.
But on Monday, the military said 11 soldiers had also gone missing, “out of whom seven soldiers have been reportedly killed and then beheaded”.
The bodies have not been found, but intelligence intercepts indicated that they had been killed, a senior military official told AFP in the northwest.
The army said more than 100 militants “from a safe haven across the border” attacked troops on patrol. It claimed to have killed 14 militants.
Pakistan said two rockets and sniper fire were also fired into Lower Dir on Monday.
The army “has strongly protested with their counterparts across the border for not taking action against miscreants present in safe haven in Afghanistan,” a military official said.
Pakistan’s new prime minister on Monday also condemned the attacks and said he would discuss the matter with President Hamid Karzai.
“Pakistan has strongly protested with Afghanistan on the cross-border attacks and I will also take up this issue with Karzai,” Raja Pervez Ashraf told reporters in Karachi.
His office, however, did not elaborate on when such a conversation might take place.
Pakistani troops have been bogged down for years fighting local Taliban but have resisted US pressure to carry out a sweeping offensive against Afghan Taliban fighters in its North Waziristan tribal area.
US Defense Secretary Leon Panetta warned Islamabad earlier this month that Washington was running out of patience over terror safe havens.
Islamabad imposed a blockade, now in its seventh month, on overland NATO supplies into Afghanistan since US air strikes killed 24 Pakistani soldiers along the Afghan border on November 26.
Pakistan was the Taliban’s chief backer when the militia was in power, and is accused by both Kabul and Washington of continuing to play a double game in supporting the insurgency despite its official US alliance.
Pakistanis have sought to deflect some of pressure, by saying the country has suffered more than any other from terrorism, and accuse Kabul and Washington of trying to find a scapegoat for the 10-year war in Afghanistan.
Afghanistan and Pakistan have long blamed each other for Taliban violence plaguing both sides of their porous, mountainous border.
Pakistan says rebels have regrouped in eastern Afghanistan. Afghan and US officials want Pakistan to eliminate Taliban and al Qaeda-linked havens used to launch attacks in Afghanistan.

Major terror bid foiled in Quetta

QUETTA: The Frontier Corps (FC) and police seized a massive quantity of hand grenades, bombs, explosives and firearms, and arrested two terrorists of banned organisations late on Tuesday, foiling a bid to carry out a massive terrorist strike on government officials and installations.

This was revealed by FC Sector Commander Brigadier Abdul Rashid and Police DIG (Investigation) Hamid Shakil in a joint press conference at the FC Headquarters. The security officers said the suspects were arrested after a patrol party intercepted a vehicle at Imdad Chowk near the railway station on Zarghoon Road. After a thorough search of the car, 20kg explosives, two remote-controlled bombs, and homemade explosive material were seized.

The Frontier Corps personnel arrested the driver, identified as Danish, a resident of Mand district of Kech. During interrogation, Danish revealed information that led the security agencies to a building in Mill area of Sariab Road, from where they arrested the other suspect, identified as Ghulam Yasin alias Khalid Bugti, a resident of Lehri Colony, Burma Hotel. The FC and police also seized 2,500kg of explosive material, a 10kg homemade bomb, two RPGs, seven rockets, five hand grenades, a time-device and transmitter from the building.

“They confessed to their involvement in attacks against some government organisations,” the officials said, adding that the suspects had been directed by Baloch Republican Army Commander Murad to carry out attacks in Quetta.

The security officials said the suspects revealed they were awarded Rs 1 million for the Almo Chowk blast and had been promised Rs 1.5 million if they succeeded in carrying out more attacks in the city. The FC DIG claimed that the suspects’ target were government officials and organisations.

BRA behind bombings in Quetta: DIG FC

QUETTA: Frontier Constabulary and the police on Tuesday announced the arrest of two men allegedly involved in a number of bombings in and around Quetta. Authorities claimed that as per confessions, the men received orders and funds for their activities from Nawab Baramdagh Bugti by way of a Baloch Republican Army (BRA) commander.
In press briefing held at the FC head quarters on Tuesday, DIG FC Brigadier Abdul Rasheed said that timely action by the paramilitary force and police had resulted in the arrest of two men allegedly involved in planning and executing terrorist activities within the provincial capital, in addition to confiscating large amounts of explosive material from their possession.
Brigadier Rasheed said that an FC patrol had intercepted a car, bearing registration numbers AAG-925 at 12:55am between the night of June 25 and 26, between Imdad square and Railway Station square on Zarghun road, Quetta. As the officials searched the car, they recovered 20 kilograms of explosive materials, two remotes and other explosive devices. They arrested a man identified as Danish, son of Ghulam Mohammad, belonging to Mund in Kech district.
Subsequently, police and the FC conducted a joint raid at a suspected location on Saryab road. The action yielded one suspect and 2500 kilograms of explosive materials, two RPG-7s, detonators, five grenades, timers, and transmitters.
The suspect arrested was identified as Ghulam Yasin, son of Khalid Bugti, hailing from Dera Bugti.
According to FC, Danish had shifted from Mund to Quetta five months ago, while Ghulam Yasin had shifted to Quetta from Dera Bugti five years ago.
Brigadier Rasheed said that both men had confessed to being involved in attacks on government organisations and that they were working on the orders of a BRA commander “Murad”, who in turn received directives from Nawab Baramdagh Bugti.
The DIG added that the suspects had confessed to receiving Rs1 million for detonating a bomb at Almo square on May 14, 2012. The suspects further revealed that they had been promised Rs1.5 million for conducting additional successful bombings.
Brigadier Rasheed added that Danish had also admitted to a number of criminal activities including murdering three barbers, and other counts of terrorism in Mand, and Turbat.
Danish’s partner Ghulam Yasin admitted to having conducted bombings of railway tracks in Quetta.
They are currently being questioned under police supervision.
