Pakistan won't be given access to Altaf: British officials
By Dawn.com

**KARACHI: Pakistani government representatives will not be given access to Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) chief Altaf Hussain who is a British citizen, DawnNews quoted UK officials as saying on Thursday.

Meanwhile, the procedure for Hussain's angiography began at a hospital in London.

The hospital had conducted blood tests of the MQM chief yesterday, party leader Nadeem Nusrat said.

The MQM Rabita Committee had said on June 3 that Hussain had been taken by the police for questioning and was later moved to a local hospital.

The committee had said in a statement earlier that Hussain would remain in the hospital overnight and doctors would conduct a fasting blood test.

“The doctors will decide after looking at the blood test report if Hussain is medically fit to be interviewed by the police or not,” the statement had said.

Nusrat said Hussain’s health had been deteriorating even before the London Metropolitan Police raided his house and took him to a police station.

MQM chief Altaf Hussain is being treated at a hospital under police custody, DawnNews quoted the Scotland Yard as saying.

The police search of Hussain’s house, which commenced on Tuesday at 5:30 am, concluded today.

MQM leader Farooq Sattar said that the party would continue its protests until chief Altaf Hussain’s health was assured.

He, however, said the situation in the metropolis had returned to normal and that they had appealed to the business community to resume their operations.

Sattar said that Hussain had been admitted to a hospital in London.

He also said lawyers representing the MQM chief would first review the situation before filing a bail application, adding that they were in contact with police and Hussain.

He said people in various cities of Pakistan had shown solidarity with the MQM chief and added that the protest proved Karachi is a peaceful city. “We are worried for our leader’s health and safety,” Sattar added.

LONDON – The UK authorities have reportedly turned down the Pakistani High Commission’s request to get an access to Mutahidda Qaumi Movement (MQM)’s supremo Altaf Hussain terming him a British citizen.

According one national news media channel and British authorities refused a plea forwarded by Pakistani High Commission in London on Thursday.

UK authorities have maintained that Altaf Hussain is a British citizen and acquire all legal rights. “He is living in UK for past 22 years. The matter is purely related to law so do not politicize it,” Dunya News reported UK authorities to say so.

Moreover, the local magistrate in London have also reportedly allowed London Met-Police to keep Altaf Hussain in custody for next 36 hours. The permission was granted when police maintained that due to health concern of the accused, statement could not be recorded.

However, MQM Coordination Committee from London issued a statement that workers must not listen to rumors and maintain unity.

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali had a telephonic conversation with Governor of Sindh Ishratul Ebad and assured him that the government would provide full cooperation to the MQM leader in London. Later, Nawaz Sharif chaired high level meeting in Islamabad to lay down strategy for assisting Altaf Hussain.

Moreover, the leader of MQM Dr Farooq Sattar had demanded from the PML-N government to seek guarantee from its counterpart in UK that Altaf Hussain would not be teased or annoyed unnecessarily.

Exactly.

Why is the government getting it's panties in a twist over Altaf?

He is a British citizen, been there for 20+ years, it's purely a British matter.

Why the fck is our government getting into this?

FFS, this guy doesn't even have a Pakistani NICOP or passport.

What MQM followers don't understand is that he is not arrested because of anything related to pakistan or politics. He is arrested based on legitimate law breaking. From the UK police he is considered as a gangster.

I hope next money laundering case for scotland yard will be against Nawaz Sharif, although its highly unlikely. :(
Nawaz Sharif does not have any property in UK under his name. Whatever property we hear of him is under his children's name so if the money laundering case is going to open against him, its likely to be against his son.

The local court in London extended detention of the MQM chief for the next 36 hours.

The authorities added that Altaf Hussain enjoys legal rights as a British citizen and he would be treated as per UK law. The Crown Prosecution would decide about the indictment of Altaf Hussain.

Earlier on Wednesday, MQM chief Altaf Hussain underwent medical checkup at London’s Wellington Hospital. The medical test showed high blood sugar and the medicines were provided to Altaf’ Hussain to control the level.

According to doctors, Altaf Hussain was unable to appear for interview to police due to his health condition and he needed rest.

It may mentioned here that Pakistani High Commission in London, on the direction of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, wrote a letter to British Foreign and Commonwealth Office seeking access to Hussain.

According to Foreign Office in Islamabad, Pakistan High Commission also sought details of the case against the MQM chief. The foreign office added that all possible legal assistance would be provided to Altaf Hussain.

Religion organisations are often exempted from Tax so the chances of money laundering and tax evasion becomes really low. Besides that there would be many people who may be involved in money laundering or tax evasion in UK but you only investigate for those you have found any evidence or solid reason to initiate proceeding.
