Pakistan to build a Nuclear submarine

Over seeing the current situation, even if a SSBN/SSN is churned out in 10 years with IMMENSE Chinese Help will be a Big achievement. Submarine welding, design, miniturization of Core and balance of the super structure will be a challange.

But the annual operating/ training/ maintenance cost will be ateast 300 Million US$

We already have the highlighted capabilities... thanks to (tot) agostas, KSY,GIDs etc

What is that thing next to it .... is it for cushioning ?

Yes, that is called a fender. It acts as a cushion between the sub (or ship) and the concrete wall of the jetty, helps to avoid abrasion and more importantly impact which may be caused by dynamic movements caused by waves.
The fender itself is constructed of re-inforced rubber and has a few compartments wich can be pneumatically inflated.

Rafi bhai is spot on!

My brother has links in navy. He hinted that we have been working on a Sub nuclear reactor for 12 years now and it is in final testing stages. Hull tech came from France with A-90bs (HLES 80 high strength steel) and so did the SUBTICS combat management system though we might have something better in nuke sub. Missile tech is both indigenous as well as Chinese option. And the QING class deal is very much on. We will see both in Arabian sea soon INSHA ALLAH. :)
Thank you Nabil Bhai. You made our DMI's work much easier.
Like it or not,PDF is a very good OSINT platform.

As said the time frame is debatable and also as said by some, if China is helping in this project, things might be done more quickly then anticipated. Yeah if we work all alone, may be in 20 years we get something, but if we start getting help of someone who itself is making such things already, the timeline is cut drastically.

And as for the cost, why is so hard for you guys to understand simple economics. What the US builds and operates does not means that others will get the same stuff at same cost. Why is China making good quality products at cheaper rates, why we call JF-17 a 4th gen fighter but available at a cost of half of what western option might be available, simple reason, labor is cheap here, in this part of the world. US buys things in dollars and it pays for the operational expenses in dollars, thus its their own currency. It doesn't means we would be getting the nuke sub for 1B$$, it may be for 400m$$ or may be 500m$$ and operational cost could be much lower too.

Do you have the operational expenses of PN subs ?? Even though the buying cost was high, but operational cost would be considerably low compared to may be French ones. And with more and more local production of spares, operational cost comes down.

So end is, its very much doable, but will need time and resources and good economy. And it won't be as expensive as what western options are, heck we are not even knwing what its dimensions and capability are, then how can we say its a 1B$$ sub, may be its much smaller in size and has limited capability compared to what US or other bigger nations operate.

And who knows the news is mistake, may be the navy is talking about AIP conventional subs but with nuke missile capability and someone translated it into a nuke-reactor sub.

My guess is, they are talking about a conventional sub with the capability of carrying nuke missiles, as that is the only platform which can be developed in the 5-7 year time frame.

Bhai,

1. labor cost are just 10% of the nuke sub project so the reason we can do or china can do that so cheaply is all falls.

2. all the chinese stuff costs so cheap because of the economy of scale and use of cheaper options but one can't go for the cheaper stuff in the case of nuke subs.

3. Where is the economy of scale in nuclear submarines which is there in jf 17 as u have mentioned it.

4. Even traditional submarines takes 60 months (5 years) to be ready and a nuke submarine needs much more time as the time taken in testing nuclear reactor (after fitting it into nuke subs) + sea trials + weapon testing takes another 3-4 years.

5. Even if you got lottery or china funds everything and also provide technology, spare parts and assistance it will take minimum of 12-14 years to have ur 1st nuke submarine in the pakistani Navy.

Hi, and also do not forget crews have to be trained, maintenance personnel trained, maintenance facilities built, nuclear safeguards built, and nuclear waste disposal techniques developed, etc. This all takes a lot of time and money. Pakistan should invest in nuclear submarines, but should not rush into it, and take its time to make a robust platform.

The key is whether Pakistan has sucessfully built a relaible miniature reactor and has the necessary fuel to run it.

a few more source

Pakistan has decided to locally manufacture her own nuclear powered submarine (SSN). According to Naval sources, producing the SSN would require at least 5 years and at most 8 years. Its further says that after that, Pakistan will be added to the list of countries which operate nuclear powered submarines. Can't find an English source for this so attaching the Urdu news clipping.

jang also confirms that special training is taken regarding the sub development in china

it confirms that it is SSN

Can some one clear me some things about nuclear sub-

what is a nuclear sub?-

1. A sub which can launch nuclear missiles?-
2. A sub generating power from controlled nuclear fission?-
3. Both 1. 2.

Thank You-

In this case its a nuclear powered sub I think.

Good question coz most of the people arguing over here don't know the answer :D
