But, Pakistan didn't have much options left. USSR on the west and India on the east would have been Pakistan's worst nightmare. So the Russian Invasion had to be defended. But yes, the way people were mobilized (that is fight for Islam, this is where the mistake was done by US & Pakistan) was totally wrong. Instead it would have been much better if people were mobilized to fight for their country/soil from Russian aggression. And result would have no radicalization and Taliban free society.Joining US against USSR was the biggest mistake of Zia
You are fed with wrong history, the so called warm water theory. Afghanistan's communist regime invited USSR to crush the uprising against the land reforms of Afghan government. Ziaul Haq saw the opportunity to get legitimacy and aid from America and it all turned out to be a war of two superpowers.
Well there I see more historical mistake. Pakistan was confused about what and who should rule them. Also, the Army got too much influence in Pakistan. If civilian govt. would have had leash on Army, these military dictators never would have come. Also, Army got huge support from common man as they used India card of people.
I blame common man's decision after death of Quaid and Liaqat Ali Khan.
Musharraf ruined Pakistan. He has done the best thing for India. Whatever is happening in Pakistan is used by Indian Foreign policy.US hired to Zia-ul-Haq to gain its own interest against USSR ... If Bhutto can survive it couldn't be happened ..
But ‏Musharraf ruined India's great foreign policy
Musharraf ruined Pakistan. He has done the best thing for India. Whatever is happening in Pakistan is used by Indian Foreign policy.
It was a good move by India. It was win win situation. If Musharraf would have said NO to US, US would have used Indian bases and Pakistan would have received sanctions and US might have attacked terrorist havens in Pakistan. Latter is very unlikely but we never know about US. Also, taking US away from Pakistan would have been great diplomatic victory.
Turns out Musharraf agreed with US, and when US bombed Afghanistan India offered development assistance in Afghanistan to again get good dividends as its Foreign Policy and money pushed US and UK, towards what India has been telling about terrorism, and NATO targeted those terrorists who were against India too. US also put pressure on Pakistan to act against the same terrorists and Taliban they supported post Cold War. Now it as it is damn obvious that Taliban may turn against Pakistan and it happened. Ironically, India used its lesons learned from backfiring of LTTE and applied it in case of Pakistan and Taliban.
So, it was a great Foreign Policy with good results in both cases.
What ? Its more focused on China, and building strategic and economic links with China's neighbor and getting resources for our economic growth and development. Pakistan is now just a part.Indian foreign policy is Pakistan centric- thats why you often see some ridiculous situations- objections- statements arising from india about Pakistan-

Sh!t has already hit the fan Sir. pakistan is now in internal turmoil which no one would have believed back in 2000.Nothing could have been predicted at that time, a decade earlier did America think it will get bogged down to such effect that it will need an escape route. The situation today is no better than what it was ten years earlier, like Iraq, people have stopped taking note of daily incidents inside Afghanistan, the death of some peace committee in Dera Bugati got your attention but do you know that ten police were killed in Kabul today. Once the US pulls out, the $H*** is really going to hit the fan, it will be interesting to see what becomes of the so called win win situation.
I am sticking to it. I see India more involved with China, US, ASEAN, Japan, South Korea. Its also strengthening its relations with old allies, Israel, Russia and France.Few posts later Pakistan would not be a part of it at all- please stick to one thing-

Pakistan was concerned as a neighbor- yes-
What actively warranted our respone was the soviets invasion of afg- and violations of our soveriegnity-
Remember this- we were in US block way before the afghan soviet fiasco-
So our concerns were legitimate what red russia might hv in store for us after afghanistan-
What Zia did was logical reaction-

^^^ Again a thread!
Not a mistake, it was a blunder!
I wish he was alive, I can't curse a deceased! Not only Zia, every dictator was a mistake.
