Ticket prices for Pakistan-Sri Lanka series announced

LAHORE: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) on Wednesday announced the ticket prices for the upcoming ODI and T20I series between Pakistan and Sri Lanka, starting on September 27.

PCB said that while deciding ticket prices it focused the interest and convenience of families and the general public.

The online sale of tickets will commence from September 20 and cricket fans can buy these online from www.yayvo.com, while select outlets of TCS (list attached) will commence sales a day later, on September 21.

For the One-day Internationals which are to be held in Karachi on September 27, 29 and October 2, the PCB has retained the same price as HBL PSL 2019 play-off matches, ranging from PKR500 to PKR3000.

Tickets for Iqbal Qasim, Nasimul Ghani, Wasim Bari, Mohammad Brothers and Intikhab Alam Enclosures have been retained at PKR500; prices for Asif Iqbal, Waqar Hasan and Majid Khan Enclosures have been kept at PKR1,000; Quaid, Wasim Akram, Imran Khan and Zaheer Abbas are valued at PKR2,000; while tickets for Hanif Mohammad, Javed Miandad and Fazal Mahmood Enclosures will be available at PKR3,000.

Similarly, the PCB has set affordable ticket prices for the Twenty20 Internationals to be played in Lahore on October 5, 7 and 9. These are:

Inzamam-ul-Haq, Nazar, Quaid, Imtiaz Ahmed, Zaheer Abbas, Hanif Mohammad, Majid Khan, Abdul Qadir, Saeed Ahmed and Sarfaraz Nawaz Enclosures (PKR500), AH Kardar, Rajas’, Javed Miandad and Saeed Anwar Enclosures (PKR1,500), Imran Khan and Fazal Mahmood Enclosures (PKR3,000) and Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis Enclosures (PKR5,000).

As per past practice, a fan will be able to purchase up to a maximum of five tickets on his / her CNIC, while the PCB, in collaboration with its partner, has used a ticket print material and technology that cannot be replicated or reproduced, thus, guaranteeing all valid ticket-holders will access to the enclosures of their choice.

PCB Director – Commercial, Babar Hamid said: “The interest of the fans has always been paramount to the PCB which is reflecting in the denominations of the ticket prices for the Pakistan versus Sri Lanka series.

“The ticket prices are affordable and will ensure the fans have fun on match days as the PCB is also working hard to improve the in-stadium ambience that will add to the excitement.

“The PCB encourages all the fans and families to attend the matches in big numbers to not only back and support the teams but to also show the world as we did during HBL PSL 2019, that we are peace and sport loving nation, and always support healthy activity.

“We saw the fan following and support during the first round of Quaid-e-Azam Trophy matches and we expect they will be carrying this into international cricket.”

Sri Lanka cricket team gets 'green light' from defence ministry for Pakistan tour

Sri Lanka's cricket board on Thursday said it will go ahead with its tour of Pakistan despite fears that players could be the targets of terror attacks during the six-match visit.

Sri Lanka Cricket Secretary Mohan de Silva said they received the all-clear from the defence ministry to leave for Pakistan on Tuesday.

"We have the green light from the defence ministry," de Silva told AFP. "The tour is on as we planned. I myself and our office bearers will also be accompanying the team."

Reports last week of a possible terror attack were referred to the defence ministry for investigation.

The Sri Lanka team was the target of an attack during a Test match in Pakistan's Lahore in March 2009, with six players injured when gunmen attacked their bus.

Six Pakistan policemen and two civilians were killed.

Since the attack, a majority of international teams have refused to tour the South Asian country.

Sri Lanka's first match in Lahore after that was one T20 game against Pakistan in October 2017.

De Silva visited Pakistan last month along with a security consultant to check out the arrangements made by the hosts.

“They have promised security reserved for a head of state,” de Silva said.

The six-match tour, due to start on September 27, was put on hold last week after the Sri Lanka prime minister's office warned the board it had unspecified information about a possible attack against its players.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) said it was not aware of any information relating to the safety of the Sri Lankan team, but reiterated its commitment to providing security.

Ten senior players opted out of the tour citing security concerns.

Sri Lanka has already announced two squads for the three one-day internationals and the three T20 matches.

Sri Lanka's national cricket squad arrived in Pakistan on Tuesday expressing confidence in security promises by the hosts for the upcoming matches between the two countries.

Ten senior players citing security concerns have opted out of the tour, comprising three one-day internationals and three Twenty20 matches, beginning on Friday.

But the rest arrived in Karachi late Tuesday and were whisked to their hotel under heavy security.

The captain of the Twenty20 squad, Dasun Shanaka, said he had no misgivings about returning to Pakistan after they played a Twenty20 international in Lahore in October 2017, their first since the 2009 attack on the team.

“I have been there before,” Shanaka told reporters just before the team left Colombo, where they were blessed by saffron-robed Buddhist monks.

“I am satisfied with the security arranged for us and I am happy to lead my team to Pakistan. We hope to give a good fight to our very strong hosts.”

ODI skipper Lahiru Thirimanne said he also had no concerns and they had been given assurances of a very high degree of protection in Pakistan, usually reserved for visits by heads of state.

Sri Lanka's cricket board received the all-clear from the defence ministry last week to go ahead with the tour after establishing that there was no threat.

Sarfaraz, other players urge massive turnout in Sri Lanka tour opener

KARACHI: Pakistan captain Sarfaraz Ahmad has hoped for a full house at National Stadium on Friday when Pakistan will take on Sri Lanka in the first match of a three match ODI series in Karachi.

The wicket-keeper batsman said that leading Pakistan in a bilateral home series is going to be the highlight of his career and he wants the fans in Karachi to make it more memorable for him.

“Leading the Pakistan cricket team in a bilateral ODI series in front of my home crowd will be one of the highlights of my career. I can’t wait for Friday, which will mark the memorable occasion, and I hope when I walk out, I have a full-house behind me, not only cheering me but both the sides,” Sarfaraz said in a statement on Tuesday.

“Fans are the lifeline for any sport as they are the driving force for any team or player. They give extra energy to the teams and help them produce their very best,” he added.

The Pakistan skipper added that history will be made on Friday when Karachi will host the first bilateral ODI series since January 2009.

“I request all local cricket fans to be part of history so that they can tell the next generation that they were at the National Stadium when an international series was played,” Sarfaraz said.

Sarfaraz’s comments were echoed by his deputy Babar Azam who will play his first match as Pakistan ODI team’s vice-captain on Friday.

The 24-year-old Babar recalls how he witnessed a house-full National Stadium on TV as a youngster, when Green Shirts faced their arch rivals India, at the historic venue.

He now hopes to experience the same feeling of a jam-packed home crowd cheering for the team.

“As a youngster, I have seen a packed National Stadium for ODIs on television and the two matches that immediately come to my mind were the 2004 and 2008 ODIs against India. In 2004, Pakistan lost by five runs despite Inzamam-ul-Haq’s brilliant century but four years later, Younis Khan’s belligerent 123 steered us to an eight wicket victory,” he recalled.

“As a middle-order batsman, I am hoping there will be a similar crowd number when we will play against Sri Lanka. The game is all about the fans and they need to come out to support cricket and the teams,” Babar hoped.

The newly-appointed vice captain added that Friday will be one of his biggest days when he will take the field as Pakistan vice-captain.

“I want the entire country as well as the National Stadium crowd to make this a memorable day for me,” Babar said.

Karachi, the hub of cricket lovers
Young spinner Shadab Khan recalled the enthusiasm and passion of the Karachi crowd he witnessed during the Pakistan Super League 2019 and credited the tournament’s success to the backing of the Karachi crowd.

“I look forward to a similar response from the Karachi crowds, to come and support us. As professional athletes, we need our fans to be behind us to motivate and inspire us," said Shadab.

Misbah gets emotional
Meanwhile, Pakistan’s head coach Misbah-ul-Haq has said that Friday’s match will be an emotional one for him as he played at the National Stadium when it last staged an ODI, also against Sri Lanka.

“Ten years later, I will start my time as head coach of the Pakistan national cricket team, so time has moved really fast,” he said.

“But one thing that stands firm is the history of Karachi crowds, which have always turned up in big numbers to support cricket. They have weathered all conditions and contributed in the success of international matches hosted at the National Stadium," the head coach said.

"As the national cricket team commences its 2019-20 international season in Karachi, I hope the crowds will once again be there to encourage us and help us do better. No player or team can succeed without the support of its fans, and we look forward to them being behind us when we start a new era in Pakistan cricket.” Misbah hoped.

Big in celebrations, big in numbers
Fast bowler Wahab Riaz also praised cricket spectators of Karachi saying that the fans in Karachi are in a privileged position to personally show their gratitude to the Sri Lanka cricket team and celebrate the resumption of bilateral ODI cricket, which is a stepping stone for Test cricket.

“I urge them to be part of the celebrations and come in big numbers to show the world the real image of Pakistan and its people,” Wahab said.

“As a player, I know the reputation of the National Stadium, which has graced some of the greatest matches and boasted some of the most iconic players of all-time. I assure all fans that the two sides include players who have all the ingredients of joining the club of legends and in this background, request them to see in action making of the modern day star,” the fast bowler said.

We share a special bond with Sri Lanka: Ehsan Mani

KARACHI: Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Ehsan Mani, on Tuesday, said that the arrival of the Sri Lankan cricket team, in Karachi, is a big step for the revival of international cricket in the homeland.

Mani was present for the unveiling of the logo of the Pakistan and Sri Lanka series at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore, in which he praised the islanders.

"Regardless of the 2009 terrorist attack they have come and it is a big step for Pakistan cricket," Mani said.

Mani also said that Pakistan and Sri Lanka share a special bond as the two cricket nations helped each other during turbulent times in the past. Recalling Sri Lanka’s rising political tension, Pakistan had sent the junior team to tour, regardless of security concerns.

"The world should know that Pakistan is a secure country and that Sri Lanka’s tour would prove that," he said.

Mani hailed the Pakistan Super League (PSL) as the saving grace of international cricket and said that foreign players who took part in PSL expressed their satisfaction in security arrangements.

“Players who took part in PSL were happy with the security arrangements. It shows that we are no less than anyone else and our armed forces, police and agencies have played a major part in it's [cricket's] restoration,” he said.

Pakistan will welcome those who want to come

Speaking in terms of reviving international cricket in Pakistan, Mani expressed no interest in approaching India and said that he would not “chase” after them.

“I will not chase BCCI, whoever wants to come to Pakistan will be welcomed," he said.

“I would like to see Pakistan grow and would rather not approach India as I do not sense any interest from their side and I think that cricket and politics should remain two separate entities.”

He also expressed that granting players financial rewards to play in Pakistan was not the way to get around to reviving the sport.

The Chairman hopes for a full house in Lahore and Karachi and urged fans to show their support for their teams as the first of the three ODIs are set to begin this Friday.
