Pakistan Sets Eyes on China’s New J-35 Fighter Jet

I agree. My intention to understand, was that FC-31 V2 was especially land based yet born a J-35 for carrier based fighter. I don't if we are going to pay, just for the sake of argument in this case, for a wing folding carrier based J-35 as compare to land based Fc-31 V2.
IMO, PAF should wait for the final choice of PLAAF.:-)
PLAAF has more budget for developing new fighters than PLAN.

JF17 block lll and j35 both will use WS10 engine. So there you go one problem solved. I believe j35 is Azm project. I also believe Turkey have something to do with its designing. J35 airframe will be different from FC31.
No, block-3 will not have WS-10, because its would destabilized the whole aircraft, and tell how many light weight class fighter aircraft in the world uses High thrust engine like WS-10 and for J-35/FC-31 THEY WERE DEVLOPING MEDIUM THRUST ENGINE WS-19 AND J-35 WILL NOT HAVE SINGLE HIGH THRUST ENGINE LIKE WS-10 BUT TWO MEDIUM THRUST ENGINE (WS-19) FOR FC-31/J-35
AND J-35 REMAINS STILL A MODIFIED VERSION OF FC-31

I think you both meant the WS-13 which is a chinese version of the RD-93 used in the JF-17 & FC-31

Someone quoted the price tag:
J-35 - $70 million
Rafale -$77 million
F-35 - $79 million

Anyone know how much a J-20 costs?
Regardless PAF gets this jet or not, it better be worth the buck if it cost $9 Million less than a F-35.
I get the sense that if the PAF signs onto the FC-31, it'll want the fighter ASAP. So, customization is probably off the table for at least the first tranche of fighters. It could be an option for later tranches.
Since the J-20 is already considered to be superior, is it possible to customize a PAF version of the FC-31/J-35 with certain components off the J-20?

There is absolutely 0, none, null chance of getting the F-16v. Whether PAF is getting J-10 or not whether PAF is getting FC-31 or not. None of that matters because PAF WILL NOT EVEN CONSIDER NEW F-16s at the point in time.

The intention was to raise a point in regard to requirements and not the talks or acquiring. I tried to compare the requirement viz a viz situation at hand so that readers can see it through different prospects. What I meant, in other words that we need a generation ahead fighter and to understand the requirement based upon threat in region, it can be like we are asking for Vipers at least. So to supplement our current fleet with Thunder Block-III coming next; we something as such so the next thing will be working on Azm. Project Azm needs our ease and lot of time which is possible only if we have a counter measure in place giving us enough room to breath.

Whether Vipers are coming or being discussed or not; is a totally different story.

my brain wrote WS 19 but my finger prefer ws10 :cheesy:

IMO... I don't think the PAF AHQ was confident about designing AZM alone. I originally felt that designing the jet and using COTS inputs would've been possible, but even then, there are a lot of things we'd need to master first (e.g., flight control tech) before making serious progress in such a project.

Ultimately, the PAF was going to roll AZM into another fighter program, either from China or Turkey. I think the likelier outcome is China, and the one program available for that purpose is the FC-31. But while the two will be related, the FC-31 and J-35 are going to be distinct variants (the latter designed for naval ops, and likely costlier than FC-31 due to the necessary changes).

We should also bear in mind that the PAF wants the new fighter sooner than later. So, the only option that can qualify is the FC-31, since it is the farthest along.

Ideally, we would take on the FC-31, but separately, have a totally in-house combat aircraft program centered on developing flight control tech, composites, electronics, etc. So, while we induct the FC-31, we also build a R&D base to develop something new, like a strike UCAV, loyal wingman drones, EW/ECM decoys, etc.

How about inducting the FC-31 as is with some European subsystems and working with Turkey more hands on in terms of core subsystems such as flight control, avionics, composite materials etc. This in my view might seem more cost effective. I don’t know but AZM as advertised sounds laden with risk. PAF has neither the funds nor the time to indulge in such extravagance.

It's an issue of controlling cost and slashing timelines.

I get the sense that if the PAF signs onto the FC-31, it'll want the fighter ASAP. So, customization is probably off the table for at least the first tranche of fighters. It could be an option for later tranches.

I think the PAF needs to separate R&D from near-term requirements. By merging the two, R&D will always lose as the PAF will always be predisposed to getting an off-the-shelf solution.

So, let it take up the FC-31 as is (with zero complications), but on the side, continue AZM as a more high-level R&D effort. In other words, slowly (without rush or pressure) build-up the capacity and expertise to just create your own technology demonstrator. Use that demonstrator to learn about fighter development at a much deeper level.

If we let AvRID do this for about 10-15 years without interruption, then the 6/7 generation of fighters could actually be a true indigenous project. But the key is to give our R&D space to breathe and make mistakes. Every R&D failure is actually a step forward, but only in the sense of developing technology. If we tie it to a real-world need (like India does with its projects), then we'll be stuck with DRDO-like complaints.
That makes sense but than question arises do we even have an R & D department for high end products? Also wouldnt it be wise to incorporate private sector into it as well? I believe this government is trying to bring a law for government private partnership sort of thing, the military should also think on similar lines.

J-35 could be different due to carrier based design, as I observe. FC-31 had the versions 1 and 2. I was keeping an eye of FC-31/V2 for a while. Then I felt like there are no side-bays for side winders but in the end, we now have a new fighter apparently designated as J-35. However, Project Azm is totally different thing.
Very easy to convert a carrier based to a non carrier based

.
There are also rumors that PLAN will use smaller version of J20 instead of J35. J35 is only meant for export or may be for PLAAF.

Both your posts make sense. There is no way PAF can go for a Chinese stealth fighter and F-16V simultaneously. More importantly, this also gives some credence to news about some PAF pilots being in China for training on a new platform. What if it wasn't the J-15/J-10 but this one instead?..again..all this is speculation but there's plenty of stuff to make something of.

Would also appreciate if @airomerix and @Blacklight can chip in here as well.
