ISLAMABAD: The federal government is in the process of consultation with all stakeholders to prepare a detailed response to the United States President Donald Trump’s recent statement in which he denounced “Pakistan’s safe havens for terrorist organisations”, sources in the Foreign Office revealed on Tuesday.

The Trump administration has ratcheted up pressure on Pakistan to make sure its soil is not used to plan and conduct terrorist attacks against its neighbours – a charge often levelled by India and Afghanistan.

“There is nothing new in President Trump’s speech,” a senior government official who did not wish to be named told The Express Tribune. “Pakistan has destroyed and eliminated the terror infrastructure from its soil therefore repeating the demand of ‘do more’ is not going to work.”

In his first formal address to the Americans as commander-in-chief on Monday, Trump cleared the way for the deployment of thousands more US troops to Afghanistan, backtracking from his promise to swiftly end America’s longest war. He also said the US wanted India to help more with Afghanistan, especially in the areas of economic assistance and development.

Commenting on the US president’s backing of India to play a role in the economic development in Afghanistan, the FO official said it did not make any sense as India was not an economic power that could contribute for the prosperity of Afghanistan. “How can a country which is struggling to deal with abject poverty help others?” the official questioned.

The official, however, agreed that a detailed response will only be issued after consultations have been carried out with all relevant stakeholders. We don't live in a world of detailed responses anymore... we live in a world of quick sound bites enough characters for a tweet.

Pakistan should have responded quick with the statement, ”Trump doesn't understand the suffering of the victim. Pakistan has been a victim of Terrorism and has been in the forefront of thee fight against terror and has made the most sacrifices in the world!" This tweet would have worked in Pakistan's favour considering the current dialogue in America about the alt right violence and Trump victimizing the victim (minorities and Antifa)

Pakistan should have tweeted that within the next minute of Trump's speech and got the attention of today's world's short attention span....

Another fail of Pakistan's foreign Office... because our corrupt politicians are too busy fighting for their corrupt seats of power to respond!!!!

Your last sentence is the path of escalation.

By de-esclation I mean Pakistan taking measures to soothe US ire whatever those measures may be, at least in the short term. It simply has to ride out Trump's hopefully, only term.

Of course there are inherent Pakistani interests.

But perhaps Pakistani strategists should consider what are the Americans TRUE aims in this policy shift.

Then react accordingly in the mid and long term. While in the short term de-escalating any sort of public confrontation.

This Trump address is on the face about Afghanistan. But there are many many other issues at play which have not been disclosed to the public.

Come on mate you lost soldiers and civilians not because they were fighting the war for United States elsewhere. Did your soldiers died in Iraq, Syria, Afghanistan or even in the U.S ???? Never, every single soldier killed was within the sovereign territory of Pakistan.

Ahh US policy makers Ahh!!! The talk of the town that the new policy has lot of "personal" touches!!!!
