A Pakistan Navy Z-9EC helicopter positively detected an Indian Navy Kalvari-class attack submarine that was attempting to ingress into Pakistani waters to save the reputation of the Indian military after the humiliating defeat a week ago on February 27, 2019.

After positive contact from the Z-9EC, a P-3C Orion was called in, which tracked, located and identified the submarine, later dropping active sonobuoys into the water which forced the submarine to surface.

I wonder, when detected why did the Indian sub need to come to periscope depth. It could have easily reversed course and be out of Pakistani waters. Yes there were sono buoys pinging away but it was peace time and it was not expected of PN air assets to launch torps...the Indian commander knew that!! So why come to periscope depth and give away type of sub etc. and host of other info.??? By the way it is an AIP equipped sub so it would need to come up to Snorkel.

Or maybe there was another sub nearby that slipped by and this was a ruse to keep all the PN surface and air assets tied down busy hunting and tracking this sub while the other one sneaked by.....just wondering. The IN Commanders actions, at least to me, were very strange.

As per details of that events at that time it was mentioned that sub tried to escape and conducted escape maneuver but was "Forced" (yes this particular term was used is press release) by PN to come on periscope depth.

Apparently at the time when the first positive detection was achieved by Z-9C on indian sub, it was submerged deep in the water and anti sub assets of PN like P3C and others conducted the operation for more than 2 hours to neutralize the escape maneuver by Indian submarine.

If a sub is detected in a country’s territorial waters and does not surface, it can be subject to depth charges. This the international protocol and Pakistan had all the right to do so. If the sub had been sunk, nobody would have known whose sub it was except for the Indians. If it was was sunk in Pakistan territorial waters, India would not have had any defense. This is similar to an aircraft lowering its under carriage to show that it is compliant and willing to surrender. The IAF Gnat did that when it was forced to land in Pakistan. As far as your theory about another sub, P3Cs can locate and track multiple targets. This was no ruse just bad tactics and cold feet on part of the IN and good command of anti submarine warfare by PN.

P-3C Orion was one the most widely deployed maritime surveillance aircraft in service with atleast 15+ nations.

PN Orions remained a real nightmare for Indian Navy as Russian tech (Tu-142/IL-38) was no match for them. IN got a sigh of relief only after induction of P-8 Neptunes..
