Key Points
  • China has inducted into service another missile frigate with improved anti-air warfare capabilities
  • Ships in the class are likely to be used to escort larger vessels
The People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) has inducted a Type 054A Jiangkai II-class guided-missile frigate into service with its East Sea Fleet, a report carried by a PLA-backed news outlet indicated on 19 January.

The 3,500-tonne vessel has been named Huanggang (pennant number 577). Its hull was laid down at the Huangpu Shipyard in Guangzhou in 2013. It is the first ship in the class to be commissioned in 2015.

According to IHS Jane's Fighting Ships , the Jiangkai II class is armed with one 76 mm main gun and two Type 730A 30 mm close-in weapon system turrets capable of firing 4,200 rds/min. Submarine prosecution capability includes two RBU 1200 anti-submarine mortar launchers and six 324 mm tubes that can deploy ordnance such as the Yu-7 lightweight anti-submarine torpedo.

The class is also equipped with a 32-cell vertical launching system (sited in the foredeck) that can fire the HHQ-16 surface-to-air missile. Eight C-802 anti-ship missiles are mounted amidships.

Huanggang will join four other Jiangkai II-class ships understood to be assigned to the East Sea Fleet. The PLAN is expected to operate a class of up to 22 ships and, according to IHS Jane's , Huanggang is the 20th vessel.

COMMENT
The Type 054As are essentially Type 054s, which, with slight hull modifications and improved anti-air warfare capabilities (especially the HHQ-16, which is understood to be an improved version of the Russian SA-N-7 system), have evolved into well-armed general-purpose frigates.

First commissioned into the PLAN in September 2008, the Type 054As provide a wide range of capabilities to support a multimission requirement. In terms of air defence, while the Type 054As do not have an area air-defence capability, they can certainly provide point defence protection including for larger vessels.
