Arbab Niaz Stadium officially renamed after Imran Khan

A new nameplate reading Imran Khan Cricket Stadium has been installed at the Arbab Niaz Cricket Stadium in Peshawar, despite opposition from political parties, the late Arbab Niaz’s family, and other public figures.

Labourers were seen erecting the signboard at the stadium, which is undergoing extensive renovation. The facility, originally named after former federal sports minister Arbab Niaz Muhammad, was constructed in 1984 and is the only international cricket ground in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Notably, reports suggest that even former prime minister Imran Khan had opposed renaming the stadium in his honor. The Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) governor also publicly disagreed with the renaming decision, calling it inappropriate.

Despite objections, the new signage has been installed as part of the ongoing refurbishment project.

The Arbab Niaz Stadium has not hosted an international match in 19 years, with the last being a Pakistan vs India ODI on February 6, 2006.

Security concerns have prevented further events, and the venue is not expected to host Pakistan Super League (PSL) matches this year either.

Recently, representatives from the International Cricket Council (ICC) visited the site to assess its readiness and security for international events and future PSL seasons.

Faisalabad is reportedly poised to host international cricket after a 17-year hiatus, with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) planning to stage two T20Is against Bangladesh at Iqbal Stadium next month.

According to sources, Bangladesh is expected to tour Pakistan in the third week of May for a five-match T20I series. The matches are likely scheduled for May 25, 27, and 30, followed by June 1 and 3.

PCB is considering holding the opening two games in Faisalabad, which last hosted an international match on April 11, 2008 — an ODI between Pakistan and Bangladesh.

The remaining three matches are expected to be played in Lahore.

Originally planned as a series of three ODIs and three T20Is, the tour format was revised after discussions between the PCB and Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB).

The revised structure now includes five T20Is to align with preparations for the 2025 Asia Cup and 2026 ICC T20 World Cup.

Pakistan and Bangladesh have met 19 times in T20Is, with Pakistan leading the record with 16 wins to Bangladesh’s 3.
