Pakistan Cricket Overhaul: Hit out at Selection Board & Old Monoply Players

KARACHI: Pakistan batsman Asad Shafiq was the first player to return home after the team’s failure at the ICC Champions Trophy, with the squad opting to come back to the country in installments.

The national team’s dismal performance was evident from their bottom-placed finish as they lost all three of their group matches. The disappointing show from the batsmen triggered calls for accountability from the team and its officials as angry fans, who were hoping for a maiden title from the team, quick-fired blame their way.

Amid the scenario, the players dispersed in England and planned their arrival to Pakistan in groups.

Shafiq, the middle-order batsman, was the first player to return as he arrived at the Karachi International Airport early yesterday morning. The Karachi-based player, however, refused to speak to the media.

According to a Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) official, a group of several players, including team manager Naveed Akram Cheema, are scheduled to return to Lahore today.

These include wicket-keeper Kamran Akmal, Saeed Ajmal, Abdul Rehman, Mohammad Irfan, besides assistant coach Shahid Aslam and other officials.

However, according to the official, Shoaib Malik and Imran Farhat, who gave below par performances during the tournament, have decided to extend their stay in the UK.

Captain Misbahul Haq and Mohammad Hafeez will also stay back and make a return with the others over the next couple of weeks.

‘Changes certain for West Indies tour’

The team’s bleak performance has not only left followers furious, but has also embarrassed senior PCB officials who are now planning to carry out ‘strict’ measures.

“The board will take decisions on the basis of the team management’s report, including the manager and coach,” said a senior board official.

“A committee may be formed to probe into the team’s failure so that appropriate decisions can then be made.

“The changes will come into effect for the West Indies tour. Players in the preliminary squad who didn’t make the cut for the Champions Trophy will be considered.

“Sweeping changes might not be on the cards but three to four players who caused major disappointment will definitely get the axe.”

Meanwhile, next up for Pakistan is the limited-over series in the Caribbean later this summer.

“In the chairman’s absence – who has been suspended by the court – CEO Subhan Ahmad may review the report along with other senior PCB officials including the chairman selection committee,” said the official.

The Islamabad High Court that suspended Zaka Ashraf as PCB chairman last month directed the Inter Provincial Coordination to appoint an acting chairman who would represent the PCB at the International Cricket Council meeting.

‘Future of the PCB setup uncertain’

On the other hand, the official admitted the future of the PCB body was uncertain at this point.

“There is a general feeling that the entire current setup – the chairman, team officials and the selection committee might change before this tour.

“But we are continuing to work under normal circumstances and seek a report by the team management as soon as it returns.”

The current lot of selectors, cricketers can not practically handle the precarious situation of present day cricket.
The new techniques and modern management skills are required ,which should be based on crystal clear aims, objectives and targets are set to be achieved.

Majid Khan front-runner for PCB Chief Top slot

ISLAMABAD - Ministry of Inter Provincial Coordination (IPC) has sent three names to Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s secretary Nasir Mahmood Khosa for the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) interim chairman slot as per Islamabad High Court (IHC) directives.

The inside sources in the IPC have confirmed to this scribe that a note to PM secretary had been sent for final approval of the competent authority. The names include former PCB CEO Majid Khan, famous cricket commentator Chishtee Mujahid and former FBR chief Mumtaz Rizvi.

“Although the list includes three names but in fact there is only one front-runner and that is former Test cricketer Majid Khan, who enjoys lot of respect in cricketing circles for his bold stance,” the sources said.

“The IPC has strongly recommended the name of Majid Khan as Javed Burki enjoys close relations with a high profile personality of the IPC and they play golf together and Majid’s name was finalized during golfing sessions,” the sources added.

But the most interesting thing which can occur in prevailing circumstances that what is going to happen with Pakistan cricket if the International Cricket Council (ICC) rejects Prime Minister’s nominee, as they have clearly given instructions to all the cricket boards that no government interference would be tolerated. If the ICC abides by their rules, then who will represent Pakistan in the ICC’s crucial meeting set to be held later this month?

Only timely intervention of Prime Minister at the highest level can save the day for Pakistan as he can use his good offices to persuade the ICC to allow them an interim set-up for a set time period, which can ease all the fears and at least secure Pakistan cricket team’s immediate future.

Good thinking...

What PCB should do is to introduce Performance base Bonus scheme... everytime a player make 50, 100 will get x number of bonus. anyone who give match winning performance will get x number of bonus in Pak Rupees, wicket taken will give x number of pay and on top of all everytime team wins will get a team bonous even including coaches... This will be a great move to give better future to players and help them to play for something.... If PCB reduce the payment then more fixing issue will come out and bookies will have way to brain-wash the players.

PCB mulling 'performance based pay' for cricket players

June 20, 2013 Agencies

KARACHI - The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is thinking of introducing a performance based pay package for the players in the wake of the national team's disastrous performance in the ongoing ICC Champions Trophy in England.

Ironically, although the Board has since last year twice given pay raises to the players in their central contracts and match fees, this has not reflected in their performances.

Pakistan cricket team is struggling and suffering because of maladministration and poor management. Now, immediate drastic steps are needed to put the game back on track.”

"We needed dedicated, honest and professionals people to run the affairs of cricket in the PCB. We must remove the mafia within the board which has ruin cricket,” the former chief selector said.

It may be mentioned here that ex-captains who are with PCB for long time like the Intikhab Alam, Javed Miandad, Wasim Bari, former Test cricketers Zakir Khan, Haroon Rasheed, and Shafique Papa are holding key position in the board and done nothing much for the Pakistan Cricket team and getting hefty salary packages.

In the Champions Trophy, Pakistan lost all its three group matches to crash out of the tournament. A well informed source in the PCB said that even though there was some confusion over the appointment of an interim chairman following the suspension of Zaka Ashraf by the Islamabad High Court, the Board officials are thinking whether a performance based pay package can be introduced for the players or not.

"When the players do well the Board rewards them with bonuses for wins and individual performances. The feeling now is that payment slab system should be according to their performance series wise and tournament-to-tournament basis instead of long-term contracts," the source said. In the past also the board has discussed performance based pay packages for players. The source explained that a new thought process was that players who do well should be rewarded accordingly while those who don't perform up-to expectations should get a lesser pay package regardless of their seniority.

Stating that PCB rewards players with bonuses for wins and individual performances, the source further said that the board is now thinking that the payment slab system should be according to players‘ performance in series and tournament-to-tournament basis instead of long-term contracts.—INP

At present the players who are given central contracts are assured of monthly retainer payments in three categories regardless of whether they are selected to play for Pakistan or not. Following the poor show in the Champions Trophy calls have increased for the Board to make changes in the team and dump senior players who have not been performing for sometime now, including Shoaib Malik, Kamran Akmal, Imran Farhat and Mohammad Hafeez.

According to present pay scales, top category players like Misbah-ul-Haq, Mohammad Hafeez and Saeed Ajmal will make around 1.2 million from the tour to England while those in category B will make around 850,000.

Pakistan needs a professional cricket league.

Aside from meeting the entertainment needs of the local population such a league would essentially be profit driven so the players they select would be the best they can find in the country (i.e. no one wants to see a team that loses people come to watch teams that win and/or perform well). The top players from this league should go on to play for the national team.

I am not sure how Pakistan's national league selects players. From what I've read and heard it seems as if players are recruited from posh universities and/or those who have connections with others on the cricket board/politicians. No one seems to be looking into the slums or rural areas for capable players. If I'm wrong let me know.

However, I don't want cricket becoming like professional sports in the West where children strive to be athletes (or Marassis) instead of scientists, doctors, mathematicians, engineers, etc... The degradation of western society began when people abandoned their conservative traditional values and respecting/honoring men like Newton, Pasteur, Bell, Einstein and their heroes became Michael Jordan, Madonna, etc...

Why are such discussions generated only after a defeat ?

Had Pak won yesterday I am sure people would have been commending the selection process !

Pakistan needs proper management.

No one talks about friends and close relatives of President or PM taking top position.

But they talk about team management, selection committee and player contracts. This has been tried several times. But what hasn't changed is the practice of appointing friends no matter how unfit they are for the job. It is not surprising Pakistan cricket is going downhill and will further decline.

. .
Its a height of stupidity to see Kamran Akmal and Shoaib Malik who haven't played for Pakistan show out of no where to take part of the team.

I would also blame idiot players who can serve Pakistan but chose to retire AKA Misbah.
