Pakistan Army to establish HQ in Diamer district to ensure CPEC security

GILGIT: The Gilgit-Baltistan government has decided to allocate a substantial piece of land to Pakistan Army in Diamer district so it can set up headquarters and ensure security for the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).

The site is situated in Thak Das, a barren piece of land near Chilas, where a brigade will be stationed.

Economic corridor: Pakistan, China agree on four-layer security

Speaking to The Express Tribune, Diamer Deputy Commissioner Usman Ahmad said, “The army will make its headquarters in Thak Das; this will help provide security to CPEC installations.”

Another official told The Express Tribune the army will soon take over the land formally and start work immediately so it can assume responsibilities.

Convoy issue

Referring to reports that Kohistan police continues to force passenger buses to travel in convoys on Karakoram Highway, Diamer DC Usman said the issue has been discussed with the Kohistan DC and will be addressed at the earliest.

Sindh to hire 2,000 retired army men for CPEC security

The boundary issue was also discussed to avoid violence between people of Thore Valley in Diamer and Harban in Kohistan. Both sides have taken to protesting and stopping construction work along KKH as each claims rights over land near Basri check post.

In addition to officials, five jirga members from each side attended the meeting and decided to continue negotiations to avoid bloodshed and extend ceasefire that was reached last year.

This was one of the conditions by the Chinese, that they will go ahead only if Army is onboard and will provide security to this project.

Let me explain In case anyone has failed to understand the "convoy issue" . its to do with regular attacks on Shi'a members of community who are rounded up and executed at the roadside. Sometime ago a video was posted here where male members of a village from kohistan were involved in stopping and executing 24 family members including women and children. These people are born with TTP and Daesh genocidal mentality and will be very attractive tools for anyone who has openly opposed CPEC

All the good that it will bring to Pakistan is the reason enough for Army to be involved fully. After all, armed forces are the sworn in custodians of territorial, aerial and ideological boundaries of the state.

Also, Chinese Govt. demanded protection from the Army for CPEC since without Army I am not sure which other department is dependable in Pakistan.

Not exactly. The convoys are primarily to safeguard the travellers against dacoit attacks, which are/were a plenty on this stretch. The stretch from Dassu till Chillas is essentially no man's land with virtually no settlements and hence even less security presence. The addition of the mountainous desert terrain to the above has historically allowed dacoits and bandits to hide and operate from there with ease. This has then led to the Sunni Vs Shia belligerents using this stretch at times to exact their unholy activities.

The Chillas Sunnis Vs Gilgiti Shias feud is a whole other basket of snakes, which btw is more ethnic, territorial and political than sectarian. The sectarian spin on the matter was given by the media who don't know the head from the toes of the matter. Grouping them with Daesh and TTP is also a little unfair, at least in my opinion.
