How do we find a solution then? The aim of Kargil was to gain international political support for Kashmir cause and to eventually force India, with the help of international diplomacy, to negotiate the fate of Kashmir once and for all. Perhaps, that would have been better for all of us.

The aim of the Kargil was to cut Srinagar Drass highway to cut India from Siachin Glacier which failed miserably. After the conflict Kashmir was never highlighted internationally but Pakistan surely had a military coup.

Once again, an extract from Brian Cloughley's article which he wrote soon after the Kargil conflict.

Indian newspapers and their public believe--or say they believe--that the conflict in Dras-Kargil last year was a military victory for India. In fact, it was a war 'won' by briefings and a slavishly supportive media. The Indian public wanted to be assured of 'victory,' and every effort was made to provide that assurance. Kargil was disastrous for Pakistan in worldwide political terms, and was an important public relations coup for the Indian government, both internally (in the run-up to the election), and internationally. But militarily it was a shambles for India whose brave but ill-prepared soldiers suffered gravely and would have sustained even heavier casualties had the conflict continued. The prime minister of Pakistan was ordered by the president of the United States to withdraw his troops from a successful military operation and this was done in time to save the Vajpayee government from the wave of criticism that would have swamped it had the confrontation not been stopped.

It has been almost seven years since the humiliating Kargil defeat. Though the actual causes of this military defeat and defects in the operation plan are no secret to a dominant majority of the armed forces, the politicians and the intelligentsia, the nation has been deliberately kept in dark about the bitter facts in this regard. Throughout this limited war, General Pervez Musharraf- the architect of Kargil adventure- and this coterie moved heaven and earth to portray this military defeat as a victory. The Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR) too did not lag behind and issued statements on different occasions claiming achievements and contradicting the federal government’s position on Kargil operation that had brought Pakistan and India to the brink of a nuclear war.

The wounded indian soldiers that piled up with the dead and wounded, their screams and moans were indeed very upsetting, especially the ones that cried out for their mothers, some of our Jawans wanted to go out and give them water, but were not allowed to, because the indians - would fire, night after night we would hear these unfortunates cry out.

There were so many flies that it would appear at times - to be a moving carpet of insects - at times the sounds of the maggots - devouring human flesh and the terrible smell could drive one mad.
