Pak-Iran pipeline: KSE-100 index plumbs 441 points fearing sanctions

NOT a single pipe will be laid! this is just a PPP political election gimmick! look at how much the PPP has started to inaugrate projects in the last couple of months!

Albeit, no fan of PPP or any other party, but from what i understand the contract involves the condition that if it's not honoured, Pakistan will still have to pay $1 million subsidy annually, which i think is ideal president......regardless who wins the next election, the party in power will be committed to complete the project. News also has it that Pakistan should be pumping gas by September 2014.

Right now we hold the life line of US safe return from Afghanistan , as long as US care for their boys in Afg , they can only talk . & can only give empty threats .

Last time when we just stopped their supply line for few months ( and it wasn't even 50% of its total supplies ) , it costed US billions of dollars ( which they frankly cant afford right now ) .

And Besides if US (even dont caring about its troops in Afg) , puts sanctions on us , even then it wont be something new , we are a Nation who will live through every rough patch , as we have been doing for past 50 years .

The extra cost for USA was $100 million per month for the time that GLOCs through Pakistan was closed, so the total extra expense for the several months we closed it was less than$1 billion.

No it was not .. :)

lets just leave it to that .

And our navy and airforce was forced to go back to stone age era. All those who says we will survive another sanction era, than you are living in imaginary world this time.

This time Army,Airforce and Nave will be badly screwed, we won't be able to sustain war on terror ue to economic and military sanctions and rest is left to imagine when you all come of your high horses of been there done that

Sir, somewhat dismayed at your conclusion....there was a time Pakistan was more or less entirely dependant on US for it's military supplies and equipment.....of the late, with the exception of say the F-16s and Cobras, what else does our military operates that will be effected by any American sanctions....in the last couple decades, the goal has been to either go indigenous or diversify our sources. We can't be forever held hostage on sanctions. Power and energy is future to our limping economy, the demand for this is forever growing...since birth, we been hearing about Kala Bagh Dam but what successive governments have just been side lining the issue...we have pulled through thick' thin....no doubt if sanctions are slapped, we will come out much stronger. !!

The persons like me who are living in Pakistan have a fair idea of how sanctions will disrupt our lives today WindJammer. We would have come strong if we would have been a united nation like Iran but we are not. The decade of 90's we were able to survive because there was no High Oil prices back than, there was no WoT back than, India were only inducting SU-30 back than. Balochistan, NWFP South Punjab was not burning and only Karachi was a trouble support.

Back in the decade of 90's we were not passing through a energy crises and Power sector didn't consumed 300-500 Billion ruppess yearly.

I'm dismayed at your and those wishful thinkers optimism on what basis we would come strong this time if we are slapped with sanctions?

We have a debt of 55 billion dollar. Every year we need aid and external credit so we can finance our bdget deficits. If pakistan is slapped with economic conditions how can we seek such fiances from other parties?

Mafiya

It is due to people like you who always think of the negative side and be the lapdog of USA.

Tell me what has the USA done for you? Nothing. Due to the USA and the Zionists Muslims are killing Muslims in Pakistan. India is still giving Pakistan trouble over Kashmir. Why doesnt USA tell India to stop and give Kashmir to Pakistan? Because USA is the shatan and plays dirty politics!!

Lets put it this way if Pakistan is now going to face sanctions, and if other countries join in with Pakistan and make deals with Iran, they will face sanctions too correct?

Ok how many countries in the world is the USA going to put sanctions on? At the end of it, the USA is going to be losing out not the countries dealing with Iran.

Why is Iran united and developed? You know why? Because it has its own "balls" it doesnt take crap from anyone. Read Fars news, you will see the sanctions haven't affected Iran. Countries are buying from Iran because it is far cheaper for their economy.

We in the UK are in a ridiculously poor economy due to having no production here, and such sanctions mean we cant buy oil from Iran so we have a "middle man" if we don't then the source we get our oil from increases its price because they know we can't go to Iran.

USA hasn't helped Pakistan over Kashmir, neither it has helped Palestine. In fact it gives the latter a silent treatment allowing Israhell to do what it wisher - can't be a more perfect example of dirty politics of the USA.

Iran states on Fars news it wishes to create a UN like pact with Muslim countries whereby it helps other Muslim countries in need and most importantly it wishes to cease the hell treatment the Palestinians are receiving.

I think it is about time this happened - USA has done nothing but killed our people and societies and economies.

If there was a few strong countries forcing Israhell to cease the treatment of the Palestinians it would do so - it would have no other option.

Also, Fars news is unbiased and more importantly the Western biased propaganda doesnt even show the stuff Fars news does - you will see what you have been missing out on!!

Benefit, additional gas, which means more gas for industrial sector. Since this gas will be sold on the "open access" system therefore chances of bad debts etc is low.
This was the best time to construct the pipeline. US sanction us,we close the NATO line and sanction the airspace. Now how will they go out of Afganistan :-)

thats kind of what my impression was as well. . . i think its also election politics.

the project itself i do believe is in our interests; what i'm unsure of is when the pipes will actually be turned counter-clockwise and the gas start flowing

furthermore -- lets be clear and not be naive. We have many enemies.

Western anti-Pakistan media (like BBC) will probably start going on about the so-called "Baloch struggle" and certain regional and other countries (the "TAPI" lobby) will most definitely support insurgents to attack targets in Sistan va Balochestan (Iran) and Pakistani Balochistan.

therefore what mechanism would we have in place to quickly deal with any pipeline outages. Everyone knows that the terrorist/sabaeturs groups target pipelines since they make such easy targets. How do we effectively guard it; and how long would it take to fix any disruption of supplies

I am speaking hypothetically.

Why are they scared from sanctions btw?

because sanctions hurt economies

in Pakistan's case - it's pure mathematics. We have zardari, load-shedding, gas-shedding, corruption, nepotism and sitting on enough debt as it is.

what have we got to lose

but how?can you explain it a bit?

I think US will play smart, they will not sanction now till 2014 but will wait for activities to start. It is my reading.

Peace gasline opposers can

ISLAMABAD - Adviser to Prime Minister on Petroleum and Natural Resources Dr Asim Hussain has said that those who oppose the IP gas pipeline cannot be friends of Pakistan.
Addressing a press conference on Tuesday, Asim wondered why certain quarters were raising much cry over the peace gasline while Iran already exports petroleum products to several countries, including India, Turkey, Qatar and China.
He said the opponents of the IP gas pipeline are in fact enemies of the country. He said the IP gasline a lifeline for both the countries, and the demand of reviewing the decision is incomprehensible.
APP adds: Dr Asim Hussain said the PPP’s top leadership and members of the Parliament were committed to completing the IP gas project for country’s prosperity.
Talking to Pakistan Television (PTV), he said that Pak-Iran gas pipeline project would strengthen the economy and fulfill the energy demand of the country.
Pakistan would have the capacity of generating more than 4,000 MW electricity after completion of the project, he said.
To a question, he said that it would also helpful increase industrial production in Pakistan.
The government had launched the gas project in national interest despite international pressure, he said.
He said that the project would provide 3,000 jobs to the people. It is the cheapest source of energy for Pakistan, he added.
To another question, he said that the work on the project would be started within two weeks and the project would be completed by December 2014.
He said that drilling work was continuing in different areas of the country to find more reservoirs of oil and gas. He said that the government had also taken steps to upgrade four refineries in the country.
To another question, he said that the government had been working on the gas project since the time it came into power.
Ahmad Ahmadani adds: Dr Asim Hussain has said that Qatar has assured supply of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) to Pakistan and a summary would be tabled in the Federal Cabinet meeting on Wednesday (today).
“Since Qatar has assured reduced price of LNG to Pakistan and a summary to this effect would be presented in the Federal cabinet. The next government will further strengthen this project,” he said.
During a press conference, he also said that Pakistan and Iran agreed to establish an oil refinery at Gwadar with a refining capacity of 400,000 barrels and within three years this refinery will also invest $2.5 billion.
Asim also informed that Oil and Gas Development Company Limited (OGDCL) has won the bid for 29 blocks of oil and gas. He said around $372 million investment would be made for oil and gas exploration in 60 blocks.
“On 14 March, there would be a groundbreaking for an oil refinery to be established with the help, support and cooperation of KP government and PSO, he said, adding,” gas companies will invest $4billion investment for the exploration of gas in the country.
While admitting increase in gas theft owing to the involvement of gas utilities officials, Asim said there is no contradiction that officials of gas companies are involved in the heinous crime of gas theft.

but how?can you explain it a bit?

How do sanctions hurt economies?

Well - out banks will be isolated and won't be able to buy dollars; trade with certain countries could be affected; all international financial institution aid work will be frozen, students exchange program frozen, military contacts and equipment frozen

Many ramifications.

We are a resilient nation though; we did survive during 1990s

Truth is, Pakistan is too big to fail

That time you didn't have terrorist attacks, bomb blasts and WoT and organizations like TTP and LeJ killing people in hundreds. Karachi wasn't what, it has become today.

Frequent strikes and load shedding etc. affecting economy very bad.

You may need $ 9 billion or above loan from IMF for economic stability.

Buddy, social stability means a lot. Sanctions will directly affect your trade and cause many industries to shut down. And a hell lot of effects.
