‘Pak, India need to cut defence spend’

I do not think Pakistan will reduce its defense budget any time soon. Newaz Sharif perhaps wanted to tell his people that Pakistan has to spend more on defense only because India is spending so much. Newaz Sharif cannot probably afford to displease his country's military establishment.

Good thoughts and good for Pakistan as its only foe is India and its only friend is good economy. So, if Pakistan improves ties with India [just by stopping the support for terrorist activities], it won’t need to spend huge on its perceived defence threats from India.

On the other hand, India’s on-going and future defence preparedness would be completely based on its perceived threats from China.

So, it will be kind of comments made out of ignorance of current strategic issues around India if Pakistan things India’s defence budget is targeted at Pakistan.

It is certainly Pakistan that India perceives as a source of external threat. So, logically, India's main defense needs arise from that threat perception. India has some border issue with China, but China is not in a hurry to resolve the issues. Moreover, Chinese defense ability is much bigger than Indian one.

Note one point. In an China-India conflict there will be many other big players to influence the outcome, that may result in a compromise based on swapping lands in the border. But, in case of an India-Pakistan war, India will lose face if it loses a battle or a war. So, India goes all the way to secure itself from a Pakistani threat.

Threat from Pakistan is real, but threat from China is imagination only.

Mr.Nawaz Sharif idea is good-what is important is Pakistan defence forces should improve on quality and made more agile to face external threats if any-Pakistan army must maintain professionalism and should not interfere in internal politics as this disturbs the ongoing economic development.Maintain annual defence budget within 2.5% of GDP.Likewise India too must maintain at 2.5% of its GDP.There should be better communication between the two armies and foster joint patrols amongst its common border. It is not wise to cut defence budget in $$$ terms as implied by Mr Nawaz Sharif.

if will cut .....Pakistan will face more problem.......Pakistan not only has to face ....enemy like Indian.......their internal issue is also big challenge for them.............polish, i hardly see any active role......every think is control by their arm force.....Baluchistan/swat valley........i was surprise when i saw yesterday on you tube.... that gilgit baltistan also want freedom and they want to merge with azad kashmir .......... and big agitation already start for separation of gilgit baltistan from ***..........and they don't want any more to be part of Kashmir...............balochi already made their stand very clear......they even don't want to discuss autonomy .............only freedom is solution..........

from information is seems that only Punjabi is controlling entire nation and dominating

so it is clear .......Pakistan can control only with muscle power ...........it is not because of indian only.....Indian will remain enemy forever .........they required because they have big internal issue..........they can keep Pakistan one ............till their army muscle is strong .......other philosophy will not work......it is toooo late............when i see condition of Baluchistan......it looks like democratic dictatorship

Pakistan maintained/maintains unity only by saying "we have a strong enemy called India"... otherwise they would have already broken into several countries

Great idea! Let Pak take the lead, cut its defence, denuclearize, and India will take care of ensuring peace in the region around it. We need one strong entity in that area and it CANT be Pakistan

Pakistan doesn't think India as a threat in the region, it takes India as a neighbour and wanted to remain good with them in every way. Although Pakistan armed forces have to maintain a defencive force to keep it self protected from any aggression by any country. But you won't believe that Pakistan is taking Israel and even IRAN and ex-soviet countries as threats not India.

Although India should also look towards China as threat not Pakistan.

India spends less than 2% of its GDP on defense... there is no need to cut it.
