Why did the mirage 2000 complain of their a2a radars and return back. Why did the mighty IAF not send their su31 MKI across the border, establish air superiority and surgically take back their downed pilot.

I believe the F-16s could see him on their own APG-68s too. His intentions were clear as you rightly pointed out. Cope India exercises used the same tactics since at least 2004, the MKIs hang back and the Bisons fly low and get close for the kill.

What really baffling is how PAF F-16s missed Abhinandan's Mig21 untill he was 10KM inside pakistan. He was doing high-g barrel roll back towards India side when he was hit by an AMRAAM missile. wreckage of Mig21 was found miles inside Pakistani territory.

ACE is excellent and if I use the closest correct term "open-architecture". It is similar to how the US Navy and Marine Corps have subordinate units like TOP GUN around USA (and my gosh, I would kill to be flying out of places like NAS Key West !!!! )
